Training with her trainer was now a morning staple, the redhead trying to get back into the swing of things after a few months being absent from boxing and MMA. Practicing near the window of the gym, Athena smiled as she was able to do the new move, taking a step back as she took a drink. “Game on,” she smirked as she set the bottle back down to keep practicing. Noticing a stare as she tried the move again, she spoke loudly for them to hear. “Enjoying the show?”
“Yeah. I just arrived a little early, for my beginner’s kickboxing class,” said Melissa, “I just dropped Sabrina off at school.”
The brick city air grazed Malcolm’s skin, both soothing and bone chilling. It had officially started to feel like autumn. With Halloween coming to a close and Thanksgiving peering right around the corner, he couldn’t help but be giddy about the approaching holiday season. Standing a his rather puffy black coat with a steaming latte in his grasp to warm his hands, he looked to the person beside him. “Tell me, are you one of those people who’s excited for Thanksgiving or wants to put up their Christmas tree already?” His present joy caused him to shift his weight between his heels and toes with a bit of glee. “Personally, Turkey’s great and my mom’s mashed potatoes are out of this world. But, I love everything about Christmas. The gifts, the scents, the decorations. Call me crazy but if Saint Nick could come down my non-existent chimney into my tiny apartment every month, I’d be just as excited each time.”
“Honestly, I'm excited for both holidays. I do want to get Thanksgiving done before we move onto Christmas, though. I’ll be doing both at my parents house in Pennsylvania, though, since my Roosevelt Island apartment isn’t big enough to host my entire family. I do still have to order my kid’s Christmas gifts, though.”
“I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. Before you say anything, yes, I am capable of putting thought into things. Anyways, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m pretty lonely. When I’m at home, when I’m at the studio. I spend a lot fo time alone. I could get an assistant but they’re expensive and thought of spending that much time with someone is a nightmare. Especially someone I’ll be bossing around who will eventually resent me. So…” Asher explained, sitting more upright to continue his speech. He leaned over the side of the couch, scooping a dog up into his arms with a goofy smile. “I decided to adopt a dog! She can’t talk back, she’ll love me unconditionally, not to mention she’s adorable. What do you think?”
“Oh my god, what a cutie,” said Melissa. She then turn to the dog, with her palm up for the dog to sniff, “Hi, sweet girl. I bet you smell my kitty Blanca on me.”
10 am on a Sunday morning was the crack of dawn for most New Yorkers; however, for Xyla Villanueva, 10 am meant she’d already been awake for hours. She had already taken Butters out for a walk, tidied up her apartment and answered a number of panicked emails from clients by 9:30, leaving her with zero responsibilities for the rest of the day. The idea of laying in bed all day, starting a number of television shows on Netflix or maybe hitting the gym sounded good in her head. In fact, it was probably what she needed to mentally and physically reset for another stress-filled week. But considering days away from responsibilities were few and far between, resuscitating her suffering social life was exactly how she wanted to spend the rest of the day.
After quickly packing her wallet, charger and other essentials into her purse, Xy darted out her door, leaving a sleeping Butters on the couch. Sunday brunch was one the best, if not the best meal of the week. It meant being able to indulge in both the sweet treats of weekend breakfasts such as French Toast and Pancakes, while also incorporating all the delicious tastes from lunch, therefore creating Eggs Benedicts and even Chicken & Waffle. Upon arrival at Bubby’s in Tribeca, she picked out a total of four dishes, two savoury and two sweet, as well as a couple drinks to-go from their vast mouth-watering selection. Before long, Xy arrived at the front door of their house, her arms full of breakfast foods, coffee and juices and her stomach grumbling under her coat.
“Wake up!” Xy yelled from the other side of the door, her knuckles rapping against the wood as much as possible. “I have eggs and I’m not afraid to eat them all.”
Melissa was relaxing on the couch, having the morning to herself before Sabrina’s father came to drop her off after a weekend. She was quietly reading a book on her iPad, when she heard Xyla knock on the door. She got up and opened the door, and said, “Oh hey, you’re here. Hey, save some eggs for me.”
“I need a good story for this.” Dalton held up his hand with fresh stitches across his index finger. “Because slicing limes is not going to impress anyone and I might as well milk this.” He narrowed his gaze in thought, “Like I fought some knife wielding weirdo dressed as Cookie Monster on Halloween… Or something.”
“Oh, ouch,” said Melissa, wincing, “Yeah, I once got a burn on my forearm from 190 degree coffee spilling on me back when I was a barista. I told people I got road rash from falling off my longboard. Yeah, the fighting off the knife wielding weirdo sounds more entertaining that injuring yourself slicing limes.”
“Yeah yeah, I fucking know. We were supposed to release the album a month ago. Fucking sue me,” Oliver rolled his eyes as he continued talking on the phone. “Look, you want good music? Fucking wait for it then. I’m not gunna release shitty songs just to get the fucking thing out. You want something that goes platinum and sells out venues? Have some fucking patience Rick. Fuck sake.” He hung up before the other could follow up with an accusatory remark. Oliver didn’t have time to fight with his agent nor did he have the energy to finish the album. Two songs, that’s all he needed but the words weren’t coming to him. He felt the pressure, truly. There just wasn’t anything that he could do. “Agents and labels, am I right? Always on your fucking back about something.”
“Oof, yeah. My dad works in the industry, as an entertainment lawyer, so I kind of know the world of dealing with agent, label, and contract shit,” said Melissa, “With that said, if you can, take your time releasing your music, so you make it exactly what you want.”
"I'm never watching another real life animal movie again. Ever." Valerie couldn't believe she went so many years without seeing Marley & Me and after finally watching it, she understands why she subconsciously avoided it. "No one told he he was going to die. I can't trust a single dog movie." She says, clearly emotional over the film she just endured.
"The last dog movie I really cried over was Hachi. I was literally crying so hard, my mom thought I had gotten hurt." She recalls with a laugh. "It was a wonderful movie, but the emotions hit hard."
“I’ve never seen “Hachi”. But god, why do dog movies always tug at the heartstrings?”
"That's how they get us. It's like a trap. They know we love dogs and we are sensitive saps for animals."
“Oh, definitely! I feel like it’s because dogs are seen as innocent and giving of unconditional love and you feel that pain along with them. I feel like that may be the reason why dog movies are so sad. Hell, a lot of other animal movies are sad, too. “Babe” and “Charlotte’s Web” both made me cry as a kid.”
melissa-crane:
“Exactly. I’ve gotten points taken off of things in K-12 schooling, even though I have the right answer, the methodology I’ve used to get the answer wasn’t the way my teachers wanted me to. And look at me now, I have a masters degree and I work a pretty lucrative job.”
“In math?” Jordan wasn’t terribly knowledgeable on her life so h simply wanted clarity. “Either way, you did make a pretty good life for yourself.”
“Yeah, I know. Even though math has rules to things, there are multiple ways to solve problems, just like in real life. Oh, it’s a great job, and I like my employer.”
“So I was helping my 5th grade daughter with homework this weekend, and when we got to math, it confused me so much. And that’s coming with someone who works with statistics. Anyways, how’s it going?”
“I could, but then, she’ll probably get a note from her teacher being like, “The reason why we teach kids this method is so they can readily apply it to real life situations, and blah blah blah”...”

Jordan couldn’t help rolling his eyes at the probability. “That’s ignorance on their part. There’s more than one way to learn and so long as they get the right result, who cares?”

Melissa: Hell yeah I’m free. Kid is at her dad’s, so let’s eat.
Melissa: Want me to bring something?
Dominic: Bring the most stereotypical American Thanksgiving dish you can think of
Melissa: Sweet potato casserole with marshmallows on top sound stereotypically American enough?
Text: open
Dominic: FREE UP YOUR SATURDAY NIGHT
Dominic: It's Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend and since I can't have my moms Turkey, I'm gonna burn down my apartment trying to make my own
Dominic: ya so free up your saturday night because we're having thanksgiving ok
Melissa: Hell yeah I’m free. Kid is at her dad’s, so let’s eat.

“Exactly. Like don’t fix what isn’t broken. Though, the US is ranked towards the bottom in the OECD in math scores, there are other factors that come into play. Yeah, Connecticut was nice. It’s fun to sometimes get away from the city, even if it’s for just a morning/early afternoon.”

"If I ever get married, I hope my husband can handle the pregnancy hormones." She says but smiles a bit. "I only figured out it was a book recently. I'm definitely not gonna read it."
“Oof, me too, if I ever have another kid. I hope he can handle my emotional ass. Yeah, I cried a ton when I read that book. “A Dog’s Purpose” did that to me, too.”
“So I was helping my 5th grade daughter with homework this weekend, and when we got to math, it confused me so much. And that’s coming with someone who works with statistics. Anyways, how’s it going?”

“Math was one of the subjects that always stumped me, I honestly could never wrap my head around it.” She shuddered at the thought of it. “Oh I’m doing pretty well, other than helping your daughter out with math how are you doing.”
“I personally have always been good at math, hence my job working with statistics, but they teach it differently now, and it confuses me. They say it’s to make it easier to apply it to real life problems, instead of problems on worksheets and work books. Anyways, it’s been going well. I recently went on a day trip to UConn for work, which was fun.”
