Ding Ling (丁玲), Miss Sophie’s Diary (莎菲女士的日记)
Jiang Bingzhi (蒋冰之), who wrote under the pen name Ding Ling for her literary career, is one of the most renowned authors in the birth of modern Chinese literature. Raised by a single mother, Ding Ling grew up deeply inspired by her mother’s resilience and strength working as a teacher to support her children. She went on to become an activist for womens’ rights in the early 1920s, rejecting Confucian norms of filial piety and female virtues. Miss Sophie’s Diary is her most well-known work, tracing the thoughts of Sophie and her dealings with depression, bisexuality, and romance. A significant work in feminist Chinese literature, Miss Sophie’s Diary was among the first works to center the complexities of the female psyche, presenting a multidimensional and nuanced portrayal of a female protagonist who is simultaneously all-powerful yet powerless to effect change in the lives of others.

The Yin sisters in military attire (c. 1911)
Yin Weijun (1894-1919/20?) and her older sister Yin Ruizhi (1890-1948) were militant anti-Qing and suffragist revolutionaries in China in the early twentieth century.
In 1909, at the ages of thirteen and eighteen, they joined a successful assassination squad which killed two Qing officials in Beijing and became experts in bomb manufacturing and explosives. They formed their own women’s army called the Women’s Guangfu Army which became infamous for its daring bombing raids. With Lin Zongxue, the Yin sisters helped organize the Zhejiang Women’s Army, which was linked to the rising suffragist movement among the women armies of the anti-Qing movement by demonstrating female equality in the military. Early Chinese suffragists such as the Yin sisters and Lin Zongxue believed that displaying equality through military action would help cement women’s equality into the wording of the constitution of the new Republic.

It annoyed her how confident Romulus can be, her eyes glazed over every inch of detail she can see in him. He was charming, indeed, but his playful nature always worried her. She couldn’t help it though, she fell in love with him for a reason.
“ Absolutely not, ” She replied with a teasing giggle, “ What I do worry about the most is being played as a fool, I’m afraid something might pop out. Moreso, I do not deserve of such a lovely gift. ” It didn’t take long for her to admire the carefully crafted box, her fingers traced the design; she was very amused by how smooth the box felt. It filled her mind with wonder as she took no hesitation to unhitch the clasp.
Her heart skipped a beat as she viewed the ring that was hidden within the box, her eyes looked up at Romulus; fluttering and utterly confused. “ Your confidence is very noticeable, ” She said as she traced the engravings of the ring, with such a gentle touch she was afraid it might break.
“ It’s so beautiful, I don’t think I deserve such a wonderous gift like that. ” She chuckled as she tried to find the words to describe her happiness, “ Can I try it on? ”
