The Diary of a Young Girl is the most popular Holocaust education book because it ends right before Anne Frank was sent to Bergen-Belsen. If her diary had continued until her death, it would have contained harrowing tales of slave labour, scabies, lice, the cold, hair loss, starvation, depression, and finally death from typhus.

People don't want to read about that. They like Anne Frank's diary because it's optimistic. She's funny and smart and she thinks that all people are good. Real Holocaust education would teach about what happened to the Jews. What was done to them by the Nazis. If you want to educate yourself about the Holocaust, read Night or Maus.

I talk about it a lot but I really think the manuscripts of Zalman Gradowski (particularly the most recent translation) are an underutilized resource in Holocaust education. As a Sonderkommando he witnessed the entire process from deportation to cremation. He gives a heartbreaking and bone chilling account of the destruction of his people that few others could provide.

I think Gradowski a particularly interesting comparison to Anne Frank specifically as well. He also spent most of his life wanting to be a writer and finally had that dream fulfilled posthumously through his writing about the atrocities he witnessed.

There is extensive but often indirect discussion of Jewish resistance. Both the final resistance of people (particularly women) about to die and veiled references the the ill-fated sonderkommando revolt he and his comrades would eventually die in.

It is also notable in many ways a more “typical” victim: Polish, religious, shtetl resident, yiddish speaker.

I will say I would not recommend it as a replacement for The Diary of a Young Girl (as others have said something like Night is probably better for that purpose. I read Torn Thread as a child and I would recommend that one too.) but rather as a material for high school and university students.

When I say it’s bone-chilling, it’s descriptive, the ways it talks about the futile resistance of people being led to the gas chamber, watching people die painfully, having jewelry and gold teeth ripped from their bodies, the look and smell of human flesh boiling.

It is also a deeply emotional and humanizing look at the victims (both Gradowski himself and the people he, however briefly, encounters), as I said, Gradowski was a talented writer. He very effectively brings you into not just the gore and violence but the feeling of being a Sonderkommando in Auschwitz. Knowing you are not just helpless to stop the murder of your people but that you must participate. Seeing the look on the faces of mothers as they lead their children to their deaths. Watching your friends and comrades disappear and knowing you will as well.

And it’s angry. A stated purpose of the work is vengeance. He is preserving this information as evidence in a future trial or as he seems to want more bloody revenge. It is explicitly stated that the world’s remaining Jews “in lands where their foot was unable to reach” will come for the Nazis and kill them.

That’s one of the interesting things about the manuscripts: though he knows he himself will die he a holds to the belief that Israel will be rebuilt in the aftermath.

Rewatching atla episodes for Reasons and I just realised that Zuko found Appa the night after he found out he was missing. The gaang have been desperately searching for, what? A few weeks? And Zuko sees a poster saying Appa is missing and just squares tf up and finds him immediately. What a fucking madman.

I think I am officially Fandom Old. I am so worn out from the arguments on who's the top or the bottom (who cares), what is allowed to be written (anything you want, bejeebus), what is Problematic (I know, just tag it), what other people Should Do (they Should live their lives free of judgment). There isn't a Right Way to do things. Tag your stuff appropriately, don't read stuff you don't want to read, and leave other people (me) alone.
