John languidly sitting on some old motel sofa, sipping on warm beer and flipping through the channels, whilst sleep evades him, when he notices Sam getting up to drink water and calling him over. “Can’t sleep either, kiddo?” John asks awkwardly while Sam mumbles some excuse or another. John making room for him to slip between; it’s a tight squeeze but Sam’s all coltish limbs, still a boy. Their thighs press against each other and Sam’s constantly squirming to make himself more comfortable. John tries to find a movie they’d both like before settling on some cartoon that Sam usually insisted he’d grown up from. At some point Sam begins to feel drowsy, and buries his face in John’s side. John helps shift his legs until they’re over John’s knees till he’s almost sitting in his lap like he did when he was child. John gently wraps an arm around his back and runs his fingers through his hair, as Sam begins to drift off; still in his lap, still his boy.
