A lot of reducing your stress and your kid’s stress when parenting just involves asking yourself why you want them to do a thing. Neurotypical or not, but especially neurodivergent kids. Is there actually a point to it or do you just want it done because ‘that’s the way it is’ or you’re worried other parents will look at you weird?

Socks drive her crazy when they’re not inside out? Why do they need to be right side out? Why is that worth making a kid uncomfortable all day and starting a recurring argument over?

Your kid needs to eat at the table standing because otherwise he’ll fall out of the chair constantly wiggling and hanging out of it? Ok. Move the chair and let him stand and don’t let your mom give him a hard time about it. He’s eating food and at the table. You’re already winning .

Kid has sensory meltdown in public? Yelling and rushing them because you’re embarrassed will only make things so much worse and add you as part of the problem. Leave the store, sit down in the pasta aisle and hug them, pull up cooking videos on your phone, just do what you need to do like taking care of another panicking distressed human is more important than a few old ladies giving you stink eye.

The more we loosen unnecessary rules our parents gave us the less stress we put on ourselves and our kids. The more room we make for people to be open about their emotions. The more we set a better example to people around us and show them that allowances don’t have to be hard and kids and adults alike deserve some breathing room.

I would like to adopt another parrot someday, but I think it would be very strange to adopt something older than you. Parrots can live to be 60+, so I could someday be the guardian of an animal who lived a few decades before I was even born and that’s just weird.

I don’t think I have the authority. By default, that bird should be my guardian.

My friend works at a pet store and while they don’t sell parrots, they do board and occasionally take in rescues and adopt them out. Well one of the birds they were boarding for a month was a 60+ year old scarlet macaw who knew one phrase besides occasionally coughing like an old man. She would say it on cue whenever a customer approached her and an employee told them how old she was. She would stop what she was doing, lean in close, her eyes pinning wildly, in a raspy whisper she would utter, “I was there when it happened.”

If Adobe is going to be greedy shitheads, then fuck ‘em. Don’t use their stuff. Freeware can be just as good, if not better, than Adobe CC.

I just jerked out of my midday dissociation and realized that seed bombing a golf course with mint would be the ultimate crime.

Not mint. Native wildflowers. Because sure mint’s hard to kill and never completely goes away. But mint can also be kept low to the ground, and if you turn the sprinklers off and returf, you can keep it in check. Flowers, though? With quick growth, and fast seeding? Plants that have bred themselves for millennia for exactly that soil and the natural local water conditions? Do it in small sections, and start near water features. By the time anyone realizes that they’re the “wrong” plants, they’ll have already flowered and gone to seed, and once that happens, they are there forever. Source: mom may have used native wildflowers as spite plants before for a particularly obnoxious and lawn-proud neighbor who also lived downwind. Hypothetically, if she did this, she was also 1) a tenant and 2) not a fan of either the landlord or the local HOA.

It’d be a shame if somebody linked to how to make wildflower seedbombs. It’s simple enough but some folks might not know how but might really, really want to because they’d want to do something they absolutely shouldn’t and so helping them with multiple links would be really bad, right? I am not suggesting you do anything. I’m not thinking of golf courses near me.
