ocs:

modern: yasu (she/they) and kim (she/her), wives who've been happily married for 9-20 years (it depends what version of the story they're telling).

yasu: early to mid 40s. she's a japanese-american and thai masc butch. short black hair with a few grey streaks. petite. hard of hearing in her left ear (does not wear hearing aid). hot-tempered and hardworking middle manager who's patient with her employees but not with upper management. she's immunocompromised, getting sick very often and every slight illness hitting her hard. she would be at senior executive level in her company if she wasn't sick so often. works through it until she can't. dominant and has the kink.

kim: early to mid 40s. afrobrazilian lady warm brown skin and long wavy black hair with fine dustings of grey. tall proud trans femme. assorted work (retail etc). more easygoing than yasu. hypermobile. strong immune system, but still ill regularly with milder versions of what yasu's brought home. switch and has the kink. loving caretaker to yasu.

standard medieval fantasy: queen grimmaud (she/Her) and captain petron (they/he/xem), evil (in a camp, cartoony way) ruler of a small kingdom and her spouse. light d/s elements.

queen grimmaud: ~20s. brown skin and long, curly black hair that she ties back. a few scars. would be high femme except for the fact that petron calls her 'sir'. a competent and ambitious ruler and witch, she cares about her underlings and enjoys cackling in thunderstorms. likes to dress in red, gold and black.

captain petron: head of grimmaud's elite guard and troops. they started out as co-workers, then fell in love on the side. ~20s/30s, tawny skin and straight, tightly bound black hair; presents somewhat androgynous. workaholic strategist prone to getting colds from grimmaud's thunderstorms... as is most of the kingdom. likes to dress in black.

currently obsessed with characters who learn how to stifle their sneezes into near silence.

but not without repercussions.

it isn't their natural sneeze, though. their natural sneeze is the exact reason they learned to properly stifle in the first place. desperate, intense and always, always loud, they've learned through considerable trial and error how to choke them down into something that's more acceptable for polite society.

it isn't without it's drawbacks: not only are the stifles wholly unsatisfying (and really only delay the inevitability of the proper fit they'll need to have later) it gives them the worst headache if it goes on for too long.

but in moments where they can allow themselves to just... relax, and really let loose, their nose has decided to make up for every single instance that they've been smothered and stifled. what was already a source of embarrassment has become a near force of nature, thanks to their efforts to diminish it.

so while they can still keep their sneezes under control in public - it's made their actual sneeze(s) a lot more... attention-grabbing, for lack of a better term.

In a historical context -

someone getting ready to give their lover head... by blowing their nose long and hard, they have a terrible cold/allergies. Perhaps they have some camphor oil or such they try to carefully sniff too, it only makes their nose run though while every sniff makes a wet, laboured, bubbling sound, truly gross, but they still swear by it, it helps... hopefully. And they sneeze, and blow their nose again and so on, with their lover lounging on the bed watching their struggle with pity and amusement (or arousal if they're a snzfucker; or malicious glee if enemies who fuck)

It doesn't really help though, they will still get out of breath during the act because of their blocked nose, and sneeze and drip all over.

someone battling an incessantly drippy, snuffly head cold that’s only getting drippier and snufflier as the work day drags on.

by quitting time, they’re in desperate need of something hot to hold for the cold commute home; something to soothe their aching throat and warm their insides. on their way to the bus/train station, they run into the little coffee shop near their workplace and pick up a tea.

by the time they make it back outside, though… oops. it’s now raining cats and dogs.

mercifully, they have an umbrella. but when one hand is now occupied holding the handle of it, and the other is clutching their tea — that leaves no hands to deal with their nose. that’s now running with abandon when left unchecked for any longer than a minute or so.

also: it’s freezing outside which isn’t going to help.

Currently dreaming about a person slowly coming down with a nasty cold. Listening to their usual, polite little stifles get gradually wetter and less controllable before they inevitably pitch forward into an uncontrollable, unexpectedly messy explosion. Their poor fingers, thinking they were just there to contain another harmless (although quite powerful) stifle, finding themselves covered in spray. The desperate plucking of tissues out of a box and the first helpless, incredibly needed noseblow that completely fills them, confirming to them and everyone else in the room, that they have, indeed, caught a cold.

Thinking about a person filming a commercial for cold medicine or tissues…

The makeup artist is getting up close, applying blush to the nose, deepening the bags under the persons eyes, and spraying on beads of ‘sweat’ to the forehead. The hair stylist is making sure their hair is appropriately disheveled, the costumer has set them in come comfy pajamas, all getting up close to the actor to prep them.

The crew starts by purposefully placing crumbled but unused tissues on the set. They want the commercial to look real so they induce the actor, triggering an onslaught of sneezes that last throughout the day. As the actor sneezes more and more some used tissues accidentally make their way around the set.

The actor is sniffling and wiping their nose absentmindedly with their hands as different props are being passed between them and the prop master. The camera crew is getting up close to that red nose, often stepping in front of the camera to help the actor achieve the perfect pose for the scene or promo shots.

The “sick” actor is the star, before the day finishes it seems that every cast member has interacted with them in one way or another. They’re sneezing, coughing, burying their nose into props, doing whatever needs to be done for the camera.

When the actor wakes up actually sick the next day their stomach drops at the thought of how many cold-ridden germs they spread across the set the day before.

Gravedo

Gravedo is a very contagious and common cold-like virus (in fact, it's often just called a cold!) that is thought to have been modified by magic.

Symptoms: The primary symptom of gravedo is excessive and constant production of thick mucus, causing intense, frequent, and extremely messy sneezing.

Other symptoms include:

runny nose

malaise & tiredness

chills & shivering

(sometimes) a chesty cough

Transmission: Gravedo is highly contagious in all stages, and is spread by sneezing, coughing, and indirect touch.

It is a magically-impacted virus that is more likely to be contracted in cold and rainy conditions.

It is only transmissible between, and only symptomatic within, people between early and late adulthood (eg, people in their 20s-60s). At any time, at least some members in a community will be ill from it.

Gravedo lasts between 1-20 days. It poses no true danger to anyone's life, though it is often a rather miserable experience. In terms of treatment, there is not much to be done other than to let gravedo run its course, though rest can sometimes hasten its departure and generally help those sick with it feel less miserable.

History: It is thought to have been first documented long, long ago in the kingdom of Gelus, which, incidentally, was ruled by a witch-queen said to have had a penchant for that kind of thing.

Cultural Reception: Those sick with it are not shunned, as what would be the point? It is entirely normal, and not dangerous.
