Visiting Artist: Daniel DiCaprio

On October 2nd and 3rd, as part of the McKinney Visiting Artist Series at Indiana University, the members of our Metals Guild participated in a workshop given by Daniel DiCaprio. Assistant Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Daniel’s work in jewelry and sculpture combines traditional metalsmithing with wood carving techniques.

While at Indiana University, Daniel generously shared his extensive knowledge of working with exotic hardwoods such as Ebony, Holly, Osage Orange, and Lignum Vitae. From burr selection and reductive carving methods to silver inlay and proper finishing, guild members were treated to years of material research in the space of two short days. In addition, Mr. DiCaprio gave an enlightening and informative lecture regarding his creative process and artistic vision, accompanied by slides of his incredible work.

Zoe Bilello: Meet the Member Profile of the Week
Today’s Meet the Members profile is Zoe Bilello. She is a first-year BFA student. Zoe is currently studying under Randy Long and Nicole Jacquard of Indiana University.

Zoe and I spoke as she is finishing her first semester as a BFA student. We talked about the challenges of starting a BFA degree and the rewards that come with it. “I struggled a lot with whether or not I wanted to do the program or not. I could have graduated with just my degree in human biology and a studio BA, and I chose to do the BFA because I thought that it would really help me hone my artistic skills and kind of figure out who I am as an artist a lot better than just finishing in May… I definitely think that it’s pushing me, the program is pushing me in ways that I wouldn’t have been pushed to produce work that’s indicative of who I am and my personality and my history…”
We also discussed her current body of work and the material exploration she has been doing. “What I’ve been doing recently is based more around material studies because it is my first semester. It’s really interesting being a first semester BFA when I’m the only; everyone else I feel has a real direction with where they’re going and I’m still just figuring it out. But I’ve been working with what we call alternative materials, things like rubber cording, trying to get myself away from working so much with traditional things like silver.” Zoe also talked about finding balance when it comes to conceptual pieces, and what she feels is appropriate for her to talk about through her art. While she has a strong push to make beautiful pieces, she also wants to explore more conceptual ideas.

Zoe also spoke about her artistic inspirations, such as Khatarina Moch and Simon Cottrell. She’s inspired by artists that do not necessarily directly reflect her personal aesthetics and art making practices. She also states, “I’m inspired by concepts. I think that I’m going to start pushing my work in the direction of expressing my feelings about relationships and things like that”. It will be interesting to watch how her art evolves as her time continues as a BFA.

Rose Schlemmer: Meet the Member Profile of the Week
Today’s Meet the Members profile is Rose Schlemmer. She is a first-year grad student currently working at Indiana University. Rose completed her undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University under Tom Muir, Masako Onodera and Andrew Kuebeck.

When I talked to Rose we discuseed her current body of work in which she is exploring new materials and subjects from previous bodies of work. She’s been working in two different directions: body imagery and the repetitive nature of objects. She’s been “using this material to demonstrate how people react to their bodies and different body parts”. She’s also been taking inspiration from Edmund de Waal and Eva Hesse to explore repetition and minimalist aesthetic ideals. A lot of this current body of work has been based in exploration for Rose. She’s been focusing on “material study to figure out where exactly I am going with this and what it is that I’m so interested in”.
She also spoke about other artist inspirations and how they have influenced her previous bodies of work. Some artists include Peter Hoogeboom, Iris Eichenberg and Ruudt Peters. She also draws inspiration from Monika Brugger, in more ways than one. “She has curated lots of museum shows and that’s the area that she’s more focused on… I think I enjoy her a lot because she knows how to talk about her work as well as other artists’. I feel like I can get a lot of information from her and a lot of relevancy into why I make my work and what it is about it that is connecting to current trends in art as well as past influences.”

Rose is in the process of finishing her first year as a graduate student and we discussed what she has taken away from this first year. “I think the ability to experiment. When I first came in here I was really stuck on the ‘should I be making work that I am really, really wonderful at and demonstrating my skills and everything that I’ve learned from undergrad?’ …I got to a point where it was like ‘I proved myself in undergrad, I proved that I could do it and why should I be here and make the same thing over and over again? If I did I wouldn’t need to go on to grad school. I could have just earned my bachelor’s degree.’ So I think the best thing is that I was able to come in here and decide to detach myself from previous work, start over and make something completely new and work with a material I’ve never got to sit down and touch before.” Watching her transition from a completely new start to where she is now, I think she has accomplished just that.

Shawn M. Lopez: Meet the Member Profile of the Week
Today’s Meet the Members profile is Shawn M. Lopez. He is a first-year grad student currently working at Indiana University. Shawn completed his undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University under Tom Muir, Masako Onodera and Andrew Kuebeck.

When Shawn and I talked we discussed his aesthetic and influence for previous bodies of work. He has a very recognizable and distinct hand that he puts into his pieces. He describes his style as “a much more aggressive, darker aesthetic… that comes from this deep-seated love of science fiction and fantasy that I’ve carried around with me for most of my life”. His work has primarily been done in copper, and he frequently utilizes liver of sulfur to achieve dark patinas.
Shawn’s most recent body of work has been channeling a different feeling than his previous bodies of work. “…The latest work I’m doing right now is spring. So I’m looking at life and fertility, more traditional forms of beauty than what I’ve been dealing with.” Shawn spoke of the beauty he finds in death, but the challenge in representing that to other people. His current body of work contains many blossoming forms, which he feels are less-challenging to accept. “I don’t know if it has something to do with the time of my life or my own male biological clock ticking, but something about the death just doesn’t seem to be working for me aesthetically anymore. It just doesn’t please me at the right levels. During this winter it was just so cold and barren and… I just needed a turnaround from it.” He is currently most inspired by the active blossoming of spring and the new start of life that occurs during this time: “It just feels right to be pursuing this line of work right now”.

Shawn has a wide variety of influences for both his previous and current bodies of work. He came from a graphic design background, and graphic designers were some of his earlier influences. His lifelong love of science fiction, fantasy and horror have inspired him, along with directors Ridley Scott, Tobe Hooper and Alejandro Jodorowsky. Currently however, he is interested in Japanese design aesthetic. Influences such as haiku (俳句), wabi-sabi (侘寂 – nothing lasts, nothing is finished and nothing is perfect) and ikebana (生け花) have begun to make way into his personal aesthetic. The allure for Japanese design aesthetic for Shawn is “simplicity really, without overdoing design”.
Some final thoughts from Shawn? “I guess for the older people that may be reading this it’s never too late. I did not go back to school to start my BFA degree until I was 37. A lot of people may be thinking that’s a time in their lives when they should have decided on what they are going to do already, but honestly making a decision like that can be a prison a lot of times, so don’t let yourself get stuck in that. Keep your eyes open and don’t define yourself too quickly, allow it to be open. Don’t go by rigid guidelines. Keep dreaming, really. You know, never stop, never think that you are where you’re supposed to be, there’s always someplace more to go.”

Zifang Peng: Meet the Member Profile of the Week
Today’s Meet the Members profile is Zifang Peng. She is a first-year BFA student getting ready to complete her thesis in the upcoming spring. Zifang is currently studying under Randy Long and Nicole Jacquard of Indiana University.

Zifang’s work is small-scale and evokes a childhood nostalgia for small toys. Her pieces are fun and interactive and seem to have personalities of their own. Her work utilizes a large amount of electronic hardware from things like televisions and DVD players. “I’m working on electronic components that I collect from my parents… I’m trying to transform them into toys and characters from TV.” Zifang grew up around a family business in which access to these electronic components was and still is plentiful.
One of her biggest inspirations for her current body of work is her own imagination. A big influence on how she works and creates these small, personable pieces are the cartoons she used to watch as a child. She has also been looking at other small-scale artists and artists that attempt to create their own personal cityscape.

What’s next for Zifang? “I’m going to continue this work, I’m looking for more interesting components. I’m going to make a big piece that can fit my body.” It will be interesting to see how her small electronic “creatures” will translate into large-scale, wearable body pieces.
Zifang is just completing her first year as a BFA student, and so far she thinks it’s been pretty good.

Today’s Meet the Members profile is Linda Tien. She is a second-year grad student currently working at Indiana University. Linda completed her undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University under Robly Glover and Nancy Slagle.

Linda and I discussed her unique incorporations of both video and audio in her pieces. “I originally first started doing video because a lot of jeweler’s often include a photo that is more an accurate presentation of the piece on the body. But I took it a step further for myself and went into video to create a more accurate context for the piece to live in, which lead into starting to add audio.” For Linda, it became more about hearing the context of the piece rather than just seeing the visual space her pieces live in. She adds that her current work almost entirely uses audio rather than video: “I’ve pretty much completely dropped the video and started working with audio to kind of add that layer of memory.”
Her current body of work is based around the idea of personal identity and representing that identity through various fabricated spaces. “I am working on creating these spaces that are an analogy for this fabricated self that I created when I was younger to kind of separate myself from my family and my culture… It was hard being first-generation American growing up at home and then going to school and how those places are so contrasting and different. It was hard for me to be fully accepting of my identity basically.” Her work confronts the challenges of having a different identity than the majority and how she personally coped with this as a child.

We also talked about what’s currently inspiring her. Linda is taking a lot of inspiration from her home where she grew up and the physical spaces that were her hiding places. Another inspiration for her work has been artist Lauren Kalman. Linda draws inspiration from “seeing how she incorporates multimedia and how she really expands and challenges the use of the body in her work”, something Linda herself does.

Anna Deboer: Meet the Member Profile of the Week
Today’s Meet the Members profile is Anna Deboer. She is a first-year BFA student getting ready to complete her thesis in the upcoming spring. Anna is currently studying under Randy Long and Nicole Jacquard of Indiana University.

Anna is currently finishing up her first year as a BFA student. We spoke about what she has learned throughout this year and what she can apply to next year when she begins the process of developing her thesis show. “I’ve learned you don’t have to limit yourself to metal and what my prior thoughts of what the definition of jewelry was… The box is bigger than it used to be.”
Anna’s current body of work involves exploration of alternative materials, specifically materials that hold personal importance to her. “My current body of work is research on carbon fiber… and figuring out the properties of carbon fiber.” Her work involves both traditional jewelry formats and experimental sculptures made out of the carbon fiber.

Her inspiration for this material usage is personal. “I used to row in high school. …I originally learned what carbon fiber was from rowing boats.” She is currently in the process of transforming this material that is very recognizable to her into unexpected shapes and textures that do not readily read as rigid carbon fiber.
Last thoughts from Anna? – “I’m having fun and I’m excited to work more with carbon fiber!”

Kathleen Garrison: Meet the Member Profile of the Week
Today’s Meet the Members profile is Kathleen Garrison. She is a second-year grad student currently working at Indiana University. Kathleen completed her undergraduate degree at Eastern Illinois University under David Griffin.

Some of Kathleen’s previous work has included utilizing vintage/junk and recreating it into wearable jewelry and objects. She has also made work from collected and discarded mannequin parts to create jewelry that walks a line between feeling like an extension of the body and something foreign and removed from the body.
Kathleen and I conducted our interview via email due to some issues of unavailability. I shall transcribe our conversation.
Alex: Can you describe your current body of work?
Kathleen: I am currently working with building materials to recreate segments of houses and apartments I've lived in.
A: What are some of your current inspirations (for this body of work)?
K: Architect Lebbeus Woods, Alex Chinneck, Damian Ortega

A: You've previously worked with a lot of vintage/older/discarded materials - where did you source them and why did you decide to use them?
K: Since high school I have been interested in old materials. I have been collecting vintage materials and cheap junk for about 10 years now. I frequent garage sales, flea markets and thrift stores. I enjoy making things from items I already own. There is something satisfying about creating an object from a discarded material. The new artwork is a product of its history, my attachment to it and its new purpose.
A: Any last thoughts for our interview?
K: I am interested to see if I can bring those same feelings of history and connection to my new work which doesn't involve found objects at all.

Lingwei Shang: Meet the Member Profile of the Week
Today’s Meet the Members profile is Lingwei Shang. She is a second-year BFA student getting ready to complete her thesis in the upcoming fall. Lingwei is currently studying under Randy Long and Nicole Jacquard of Indiana University.

Lingwei is getting ready for her thesis that is happening this upcoming fall. We spoke about her process and how she comes up with ideas for her work. She does a lot of sketching, specifically utilizing online applications to complete her sketches. She is very inspired by flowers and natural forms, and those are often the subjects of her sketches and work. She also utilizes lists: “for that to-do list I can just make the pieces one-by-one – one step by one step”.
We also talked about the pieces that she is currently working on. She describes them as being in between finished production work and contemporary fine art jewelry. “The basic idea is based on natural [inspiration]. The pieces look pretty and delicate.” Lingwei has a very effeminate finish to her pieces. She is drawn to delicate and effeminate designs and patterns throughout her jewelry pieces.

We also talked about her current influences. She is mostly looking at natural inspiration for her current body of work, some of which include plant-life of various forms and riverbeds. She utilizes a variety of floral forms throughout her art work; her favorite flower is the sunflower.

Today's Meet the Member profile is a little different, because I am writing about myself. I am currently working on my thesis body of work, to be displayed the beginning of April, which incorporates a variety of alternative materials. My thesis is focusing on the issue of poverty through a lens of personal experience. I'm making a variety of food that I remember eating as a child. This fake food represents the zero nutritional value that most food available to poverty households contains.
A lot of my process throughout my thesis exploration has been experimental. I went from working with very traditional metalsmithing techniques to incorporating a much wider variety of materials. It's been a really fun journey teaching myself how to make molds and cast objects. It's shown me that I'm capable doing things on my own and relying on my own resources. Right now I'm utilizing a number of different techniques to achieve the semi-realistic quality my food has. I don't want my food to completely fool people. I want it to fool the audience from a distance, but upon further inspection they realize something is not quite right. My materials list includes resin, Great Stuff, salt clay and glitter.

A lot of my inspiration right now is looking at how fake food is made. I used to study Japanese translation before going into metalsmithing, so I've been looking a lot at sampuru (サンプル). It means sample. Japan has a history of displaying fake food at restaurants and that's something I've been very interested in. I've also looked into how theater and Broadway acts incorporate food into their plays. There's a blog dedicated to making durable fake food that's been a wealth of knowledge. Other artists that have been an influence have been Claes Oldenburg and Robin Antar.
I enjoy working from personal experience, and even though poverty is not something an entire audience can relate to, food definitely is.

Rubia Hagans: Meet the Member Profile of the Week
Today’s Meet the Members profile is Rubia Hagans. She is a second-year BFA student currently working on her thesisbody of work. Rubia is currently studying under Randy Long and Nicole Jacquardof Indiana University.

When I spoke with Rubia we talked about her process and her use of the natural form. She utilizes dried materials from nature to achieve her art form. Her process involves “building them up with layers of resin and color and reassembling [the dried materials] to make my own forms.” The resulting pieces are beautiful, candy-colored sculptural objects.
We discussed her upcoming thesis show, which will be installed in late March. Her forms are hybrid flowers, inspired by natural forms but manipulated to create her own unique flowers. The flowers will incorporate scent. Rubia spoke about the interest in why people are attracted to certain things and to “play off of that by incorporating scents into my thesis so all of [my pieces] will have their own individual smells.” She also stated that she’s “interested in when people view these in the gallery why they’re drawn to certain ones.” She’s interested in how people can interact within the gallery space not just visually, but in different ways as well.

A few of Rubia’s current influences include referencing fungi and cave systems. She also draws inspiration for color and process from artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Jillian Moore. These are currently some of her inspirations for her thesis body of work.
One final note from Rubia: “I want to make art that’s fun and delightful and… I want the viewer to have the desire to interact with these pieces on different levels. I’m hoping for a really yummy thesis show.”

Bling Pop-Up Sale!
This upcoming Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the Metals Guild at Indiana University will be hosting a Valentine's Day Sale! Tuesday the 10th and Thursday the 12th we will be there from 10am - 4pm. Wednesday the 11th we will be there from 10am - 3pm. We will be in the foyer of the Fine Arts building, next to the Friends of Art bookshop. Stop by and pick your sweetheart up something special!
