You were standing behind the bar, but you weren't fooling anyone. Whatever you've been doing for the past fifteen minutes had nothing to do with what you were suppossed to be doing. Your job.
Deran stood next to you, occassionally side-eyeing you, but not doing anything about your laziness. The customers liked you and you weren't the worst bartender in the world, so it's not like he had any real reasons to complain.
Still, it annoyed him that you chose to waste your time on talking to Craig of all people. The three of you have been good friends, but Craig would sometimes forget that that's all you'll ever be to him. He would hit on you so often that it was slowly becoming unbearable not only to Deran, but to everyone who had to witness it.
"Come on, it's 10:15PM."
Deran rolled his eyes at his brother's whining. He's been trying to convince me to leave the bar and go to Smurf's place for an hour now. And saying that it was driving Deran insane? Yeah, that would be an understatement.
"Craig, I'm working." You reminded him. "And my boss is quite literally right here."
This time it was Craig's turn to dramatically roll his eyes and sigh loudly.
"Oh, come on. Like he gives a shit. You could leave right now and it wouldn't make a difference to him."
You knew that technically he wasn't wrong. But still, you didn't want to disappoint Deran. After all, he was the one who gave you a job when you desperately needed one.
"My child is here. And I'm not bringing her to your psycho mother's house."
Craig stood there for a while, clearly thinking about something, judging by the way his face lit up all of a sudden. But Deran saw right through him and he protested almost immediately.
"No. Nuh-uh."
"You could watch her."
"No."
"Deran."
"No. I like the kid, but she's not staying here without her mother."
"He's right, you know." You said.
The fact that your daughter was in a place like this was a risk already. But if someone found out that you left her here to go party with your friend? You couldn't even imagine what would happen. You didn't want to.
Before Craig could argue some more, his attention shifted towards the person that just walked into the bar. You looked in the same direction without meaning to. And that's when you saw him.
Pope Cody.
The Cody brothers were good looking, you knew that much. But Pope was a different breed entirely. You've had a crush on him since the first time you saw him, but you never really had the time to focus on it too much.
"Yo, Pope!" Craig called out to his brother, even though he was already approaching the bar. "Can you convince her to come to Smurf's place with us?"
Pope looked at him. Then at you. Then back at Craig. And then he shook his head.
"She's working." He said simply.
"It's not like she has to." Craig argued.
"Well, not everyone likes to be unemployed."
You couldn't help but snort at Pope's comment.
"He's right, you know."
"Um...Y/N.."
"Craig, I told you. No. I'm not going anywhere."
"No, it's not that." He pointed behind you. "Look."
You let out a quiet sigh, thinking that it was just another stupid joke or something. But when you slowly turned around, you saw your daughter. She must've somehow snuck out of Deran's office and was standing behind the bar now, looking extremely proud of herself.
She looked right at you and smiled.
"Hi mama."
Deran was already crouching in front of her, before you could even react properly.
"What are you doing here, you little demon baby?"
"No baby. Iris."
He tried (and failed) to keep a straight face as your little girl just casually corrected him. Not that it was surprising, because she got her confidence from you.
"You brought her here?"
You could hear the way Pope said it and it did something to you. He sounded genuinely worried that you didn't have anyone to leave Iris with, like he was interested in her wellbeing. And your delusions probably weren't helping with the feelings you had for him.
"Couldn't find a babysitter that would take her last minute." You explained.
Pope nodded slowly. Then he leaned against the counter while still maintaining eye contact with you.
"Next time you need someone to watch her, you call me. Deran can give you my number later."
You muttered a quiet "thank you", trying to sound casual, but inside? You were freaking out. Completely. Because the guy you've been secretly into has offered to babysit your daughter for you.
As if he couldn't get more attractive than that.
