Let's Talk Andragogy: Embracing the Future of Learning
As educators, we're always adapting and growing - it’s how we’re wired and what we do! Higher education has evolved in incredible ways, especially as our classrooms and course rooms now include a diverse population of learners: adults bringing their life experiences, career goals, and practical perspectives into the mix.
But here's something to think about: while we’ve been using the term pedagogy to describe teaching methods and practices, does it really capture how we educate our adult learners?
The term andragogy was created specifically for adult education. Adopting it alongside pedagogy isn’t about removing tradition; it's about refining our language to better reflect the diversity in our classrooms and course rooms and the tailored approaches we use to reach and teach our adult learners.
Sure, some might wonder, "Why change the term pedagogy since it’s familiar to the education community?" But think of it this way – the terminology we use across the industry of education should grow with us. Shifting toward terms like Andragogy shows we're responsive to our learners' evolving needs. It’s also a way to be more inclusive, acknowledging that adults bring unique strengths and challenges that deserve to be recognized in how we talk about education.
