“As Robert Jordan said, ‘Any fool knows men and women think differently at times, but the biggest difference is this. Men forget, but never forgive; women forgive, but never forget,’”

Let's Talk Andragogy: Embracing the Future of Learning
As educators, we're always adapting and growing - it’s how we’re wired and what we do! Higher education has evolved in incredible ways, especially as our classrooms and course rooms now include a diverse population of learners: adults bringing their life experiences, career goals, and practical perspectives into the mix.
But here's something to think about: while we’ve been using the term pedagogy to describe teaching methods and practices, does it really capture how we educate our adult learners?
The term andragogy was created specifically for adult education. It emphasizes principles like self-directed learning, drawing on prior experiences, and practical applications—all hallmarks of how adults learn best. Adopting it alongside pedagogy isn’t about removing tradition; it's about refining our language to better reflect the diversity in our classrooms and course rooms and the tailored approaches we use to reach and teach our adult learners.
Sure, some might wonder, "Why change the term pedagogy since it’s familiar to the education community?" But think of it this way – the terminology we use across the industry of education should grow with us. Shifting toward terms like Andragogy shows we're responsive to our learners' evolving needs. It’s also a way to be more inclusive, acknowledging that adults bring unique strengths and challenges that deserve to be recognized in how we talk about education.
Now, we know change can be tricky. Pedagogy has been a cornerstone of educational discussions for ages, and some might feel that Andragogy is a difference without a distinction. But it's not about splitting hairs. It's about building on what we already do so well, celebrating the success we've had teaching learners of all ages, and fine-tuning how we frame those efforts to stay current and relevant. Imagine the opportunities to connect more deeply with our adult students when our language reflects their unique journeys.
This doesn’t mean a complete overhaul - just a shift in perspective. We could start small: introduce andragogy in professional development discussions, pilot its use in departments that focus on adult learners, or even just sprinkle it into conversations to see how it feels. Over time, this small addition to our vocabulary could make a big difference in how we think, consider and approach our engagement in adult education.
Together, we have the chance to lead this evolution in higher education, ensuring that our practices - and the terms we use to describe them - continue to inspire and empower all learners. Let’s celebrate the journey for our students and ourselves and see Andragogy as a natural next step in how we grow as educators.
