Idk if you're the right person to ask about this, but recently I've been considering going to trade school because I feel like I'm not going to do well taking an academic route. Specifically, I've wanted to become some kind of mechanic. However, I'm nervous because I've heard people talk about how women in those jobs are treated by their coworkers. I don't want to let it scare me out of pursuing a job like that, since the whole reason misogynistic work environments come to exist is because there aren't enough women in those fields, but I also don't want to put myself in danger (as in stuff like actual sexual harassment/assault, not things like the occasional sexist comment or rudeness).

(You don't have to answer this if it's not something you know enough about though, I just thought I'd ask you because you were the only person I could think of who might know something about the trades.)

I won't say assualt and such doesn't happen because that's a lie. I'll just say it's not that common in the mechanics industry. When it comes to trades the biggest offenders of this is construction. Nearly 45% of male-on-female sexual abuse happens just in construction. I've yet to meet a woman in construction who doesn't have a work horror story of some kind regarding sexual abuse.

When it comes to mechanics it's a bit safer. The amount of misogyny you'll be subjected to is largely dependent on where you get a job. I've met women mechanics who've had zero issue with "active" misogyny (as in, sexual harrassment/assault) at work from coworkers and I've met women mechanics who've had to quit/get police involved due to the abuse and harrassment they were subjected to. It comes down to environment in the end.

Generally you're safest at a small local business with older men. They usually have daughters and are more protective of their women coworkers/employees. It's the shops with tonnes of young shithead men you gotta watch out for.

If you have any women friends who are willing, I'd suggest having them go to the shops you're looking for employment at and get a vibe for the place. How the techs speak to them, if they actually bother to explain or just assume she won't know what he's talking about because she's a woman, if they try to upcharge her because they figure she won't know the prices for parts/labour, etc. But that's a ways down the line.

I'll also say that inactive misogyny (as in, shitty comments/beliefs) are rampant through blue collar work in general. That won't change until more women get into blue collar work. To some of these cunts you'll have to work twice as hard to be considered half as good. Glass ceilings are only there to be broken, but it's up to you if you wanna put up with it. At the end of the day it really just comes down to how much shit you'll be subjected to and your willingness to tolerate it.

From experience, it’s not that bad? Yes there are older men there, and they say some things that are weird asf. But it’s not *bad*

I work for an actual company, with an actual HR though. Yes there are jokes made at my expense but that’s everywhere in blue collar work, I’ve only had to go to my boss once after my 55yo coworker said something kinda sus. But it was just a really weird joke I think. Older men are better from experience funnily enough, like blu said they have daughters and are protective. Younger men suck. Mostly just very asshole-ish, because of pride and shit. Older men aren’t bad and I’ve learned a lot from them! Hell I’ve entered my superintendent’s office and sat with him for hours while he taught me more about refrigeration, and my older coworkers teach me things every day. Exact same with any older truck drivers that pull up with issues

There are a few other women there, only one person made weird advances towards one of my coworkers but he was very quickly fired. Im the only AFAB technician there, though, from my experience at my job it’s not bad. Just be prepared for older men making weird jokes lol.

Im not even treated like a girl at my job? Ive literally been called one of the boys lol. It depends on how you present yourself Ive found, i present myself very just. Boy like I guess? I have their sense of humor lol. They’re not afraid to make misogynistic, homophobic, and even transphobic jokes around me since I present myself very masc [the amount of people who think im a lesbian over there is insane].

But be prepared for weird comments. Not necessarily at your expense but blue collar men are blue collar men and you need to expect that. You need thick skin, my job is tame asf compared to other places lmao. I wouldn’t trade it for the world though. Getting into trades is great! I have no regrets becoming a mechanic as a 20 yo woman, im turning 22 this year and I still love it!

Just be prepared for hard work, and remember that you never stop learning! If you find a good shop you’ll be leagues ahead of everyone else! If you have any questions feel free to send an ask or dm me directly

Edit: neglected to mention my trades in case you have specific questions about em. Im a fleet refrigeration technician [I work on reefer units on trailers] so I know about HVAC and diesel shit.
