Blog Post #1: Research/Learning Focus
Blog Post: Hegemony
Hegemony is the concept of social forces that push individuals into patterns and social norms. This is brought about because the widely divulged images telling us who can be rich and how they can act. These are shown and perceived to be the only way to gain economic or social power within a heavily capitalistic and money-focused system. Because of the growing strength of social media, hegemony is no longer just involved in economic status. The large worldview that is given by social media, instead of opening up our ideas of status and acceptance has instead led us to cut down on that world view and focus on celebrities, influencers, and rich people. There are people who you would have never heard about in your whole life before, and because of their status and the availability of social networking they are able to reach an international audience that is built around want and envy.
This publicity, combined with cheaper access to the internet and smartphones, takes advantage of people who are obsessed with success and changes their view of success to be built around the people they see on Instagram. Making $80,000 a year can seem like chump change to people when they are looking at people who fly in private jets, drive supercars, and use/wear expensive goods. The lives that people strive for are no longer their dreams and their own aspirations, they are constructed by a much larger social group than ever before. So many careers are focused on making it big now, and being publicly loved instead of focusing on the small scale of your family and local community. It’s not necessarily bad that people are focusing on large scale success, it can lead to global humanitarian projects or a strong tech influence that saves lives. It is bad though that many of these people posting their riches and flaunting on social media are primarily young and white. This enforces the idea that people must be white and of certain ideas/lifestyles to be appreciated. The prevalence of marginalized people that have become successful is something that can help their groups grow and learn different ways of becoming successful.
Blog Post #6: Sex/Gender in Media
Gender and sex roles in media are slowly starting to change to fit the current social climate. Despite this there are still pockets of antiquated ideals in both physical and digital social groups. Many people think that males and females are completely distinctive, yet our own identities clearly oppose that. As Carter states, scholars made a distinction between sex and gender; sex being based on biology and gender being based on the socially constructed ideologies. This itself is problematic itself because of the implication that your physical makeup has anything to do with how you should act, what interests you should hold, and even what sexual practices you should follow. She says “the media play a role, it is argued, in articulating men and women into separate gender roles based on their sex.”
This is especially bad when you look at society's expectations of masculinity. According to Craig, part of masculinity is that “men will participate in and support patriarchy, and the traditional characteristics of masculinity are made to seem so correct and natural that men find the domination and exploitation of women and other men to be not only expected, but actually demanded.” This is not only damaging to the males but also strongly affects the female gender roles and serves to continue the degradation of females and consideration of female strength or resistance as hysteria.
Blog Post: Disability’s Place in Social Media
Much like many other groups, disabled people are able to gain a lot of power and identity through social media. Although there are groups that still discriminate against disabled people and push them out of “normal” social groups, a lot of disabled people have been able to rally the public behind their causes. The groups that pay attention to these causes are problematic though, a lot of the interest around it has been commercial. This is a good start to inclusion as the opinion around disabled people might change to see them as a part of our “normal” society because of the exposure gained from these campaigns. For instance, Lego introduced disabled characters after a campaign from Toy Like Me.
The use of social media platforms has also helped disabled people connect with people like them, allowing them to learn more about the experiences they may have in life. It can show them a more full life and give them access to inspirational people within their community. Even the way social media has molded modern technology has helped disabled people. The introduction of cheaper touchscreen devices and the improvement of speech to text has given a much cheaper alternative to classic medical devices. Although the price of these devices is still prohibitive to some, it has opened up doors for some families as well as eased up the cost for charities that provide accessibility devices to people in need.
Perhaps the biggest concern with this commercial interest is that disabled people might also be at risk for predatory marketing. Because a majority of companies aren’t focused on disabled people ones that do listen to the campaigns might be enticed to have a high starting cost until competing companies start to enter the market. All identities are at risk of this, not just disabled people, but pandering to a marginalized group is more harmful to their community image than non-marginalized groups. Social media is just as dangerous as normal society when it comes to mistreating people yet it holds a certain strength in empowerment that the physical world has yet to provide.
Blog Post: Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer
The females in Prodigal Summer represent a connection to and a nurturing of nature while the mans “loving” of nature revolves around death, with him spraying insecticide to save his Chestnut tree. The focuses of the stories intertwine and the living things in the stories are all connected. The message of the book can sometimes be a little bit heavy handed. The split between man and woman, although relevant and important, it can sometimes draw attention away from the ecological focus Kingsolver seems to strive for. The book is extremely educational and scientific, Kingsolver’s skill as a scientist expertly contributing to the story. This level of science can sometimes be a bit overwhelming because of how repetitive it gets. This is clearly to serve the purpose of education, the whole book involving education on the environment, but sometimes the situations can feel a little less like a dialogue where both parties may learn about the other and more like a scolding or a lesson. I also really didn't care for the amount of sexuality in the book, it felt like a cheap way to point out that humans are also just animals focused on procreation as well. I will admit bias here though as I generally don’t care for sex scenes in texts as they usually just reinforce gender norms and I don’t think the intended messages are transmitted as clearly as the author hopes.
The way Kingsolver uses the split between man and woman is relevant historically because of the way nature has been personified as female for most of history. I do wish that there was a female character shown to be negative towards nature in some way. This would have tied in nicely to the message of education, as the social, not natural, power difference of male over female could be shown in a much more complex way. The damage that a dominating influence can have on a child would have been a great lesson as well on the way people assume the beliefs around them and would be a more forgiving and global look at the increasing manipulation of nature for humankind’s own interests. The man being the only character that is a killer of nature makes the argument one sided and not interested in why Mr. Walker might treat nature the way he does.
Blog Post 3: Queer Identity
Warner’s theorization of queer identities is much more than one of sexual orientation. Warner notes that the entire identity of “queer” people is formed from being held as different from the norm for hundreds of years. This kind of categorization has caused the entire system of our day to day lives to exclude them too. Something as instinctive as continuing the human race through reproduction (I guarantee that is not a problem, given the current world population has risen nearly 80 million this year) has taken on a new meaning. Reproduction has become the social norm of the familial unit, yet there are approximately 153 million orphans worldwide. The thought that someone must genetically reproduce to have a happy and meaningful life or even have kids at all is simply ridiculous. This tired approach to the familial unit is the life of a lot of people, and it’s certainly not to be looked down upon to have “classic” family structures, it is cause for concern though when these family structures exclude and further discriminate members of society.
Gender roles are a strong part of many different theory movements, and queer theory partly emerged out of women’s studies. A lot of people hold strong gender roles onto people and when it comes to queer identity, that can be a concern. There are many times where a male may be assumed to be gay because they have an interest in beauty or fashion due to beauty being a standard held to females. This kind of categorizing is harmful and only serves to restrain people to their “proper” places. Why should anyone be expected to have an appearance that is different than their desires for themselves no matter what it is. The traditional gender roles and familial expectations are further enforced within the workplace and job environment. Women are still the primary receiver of leave after having a child, and while I can imagine they need the rest, males are largely left out of the family unit in this situation. It becomes of even more concern that gay couples must, after jumping through the hoops and discrimination in the adoption system, then work to figure out how to receive proper leave to care for the new responsibilities caused by a child of any age.
From work to marriage, to insurance, welfare, taxes, religion, and the simply day to day attacks that queer people face we see a system that seems to have grown to be too big to stop. There are calls for equality and acceptance, but many people see these things as gifts given to the queer community when in reality they are distractions from the fact that the world hasn’t been designed for them to belong. They have been cast to the edges and through that have found a supportive place. Yet inside these communities, other discrimination is a sad occurence and it serves to truly isolate people who might already be dangerously close to the edge.
Identity is a complex topic and this blog doesn’t attempt to assume anything, in fact I had difficulty putting my thoughts into words in fear of making mistakes. I don’t really know what that means but I’ve been studying identity for the last couple years now and I know that it is an incredibly difficult thing to understand yourself and the long lasting damage that can be done when creating identities and assuming things about others. If you have a point that you’d like to make to me please don’t hesitate as I am simply ignorant and I happily welcome learning as much as I can so I can better my interactions with others and learn about myself in the process.
Blog Post #3: The Crusade Against Earth
Lynn White Jr. places the roots of the ecologic crisis in the lap of Christianity. The Genesis passage details God giving dominion over the Earth to man. This coupled with embracing of technology at the medieval time started a progressively stronger ideology that man should take what they can because it is their God-given right. White Jr. ensures that his view on this is clear, he specifies that Christianity is a complex religion and that his broad claims apply mostly to the Latin West Christianity because the tone and the ideals of Western and Eastern Christianity are built on different foundations. Comparing these viewpoints to other Eastern religions White Jr. analyzes the way nature lost its spiritual importance to man. Older religions had a spirit or deity for almost every aspect of nature and with Christianity came the dualism between Man and Nature. Because Man’s creation is separate from that of his environment and he is formed in the image of God, he is inherently separate from nature. Edward Abbey’s “Polemic: Industrial Tourism and the National Parks” discusses this use of nature as something to entertain Man and be used by man instead of something for man to participate in.
In “Polemic: Industrial Tourism and the National Parks”, Abbey talks about the government's plans to install a road through the Arches to increase tourism. Abbey’s tone throughout the piece makes his feelings toward the idea of this well known to the audience. After dreadfully contemplating the way the park would be when the paved road was finished he adds, “Progress has come at last to the Arches, after a million years of neglect. Industrial Tourism has arrived.” He has a large amount of disdain for the savior role that industrial tourism tries to take up; the attitude that the Earth needs technology to be enjoyed by many instead of putting in the effort to change the way we look at nature. Instead of learning to enjoy the untouched nature by being a part of it and respecting it, we try to change the nature so that we can stay in our cars and treat it as an attraction, like something that we don’t relate to. This message so clearly ties to White Jr.’s thoughts on the way the spirit of nature and Man’s role in nature has changed with Christianity. The Arches are set up to be something that man uses to make money and garnish their ego as something they own.The Arches becomes a machine instead of being a place of spirit where Man can remove himself from his humanity and humbly take solace in the complexity and ubiquity of nature.
Blog Post #2: Ecocriticism in the 21st Century
Media is present for almost every waking moment currently, providing a large amount of texts to analyze. This puts ecocriticism, “the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment,” in a place of power that it hasn’t before been in. The texts are also getting increasingly aware of our harmful practices. The Anthropocene: The age of Mankind is a text that is so aware of the human impact on our planet that it’s sole message is that of the damage we have done and the way it will change history forever by ushering in a new geological period that carries effects that are likely permanent. Despite this, the conversation regarding the environment hasn’t influenced public opinion or policy change enough to help change any significant damage. In fact, the United States withdrawing from the Paris Accords only serves to worsen the public opinion on not only the fight against climate change, but outside our own country can have serious effects on the way climate change is viewed worldwide.
Films like The Anthropocene: The age of Mankind are often overlooked in the generally consumed media because there are a lot of large corporations that control many different aspects of consumerism that will likely not fund or help these films because it goes against their interests in the use of natural resources. Coca-Cola, for example, wouldn’t sponsor an article about the use of water from third-world countries for products because they strain water resources in India themselves,
Until there is a change in corporate interest surrounding the saving of the environment, the message will struggle to keep up with normal media until truly permanent damage has been done. (that or we’ll just go ruin another planet).
Blog Post #2: Analysis of Twitter
Twitter is a platform that is widely used by many different demographics. One of the strongest groups on Twitter is celebrities and other very upper class people. The dominant message of Twitter is one of faux connection to celebrities and a push to connect to as many people as possible. This causes an almost platform wide focus on braggadocious posts about cars and other fancy goods. The verification of certain accounts of “public interest” has also caused a split between the people who are famous and the smaller social network personalities. There are also accounts that were verified that shouldn’t have been verified due to their inflammatory and divisive speech. Twitter opened up verification to all users at one point and that ultimately ended poorly, causing the entire verification system to be paused so that they can reevaluate their policies and clarify their stance on verified accounts.
Another problem with Twitter is accounts that cause homophily, accounts like @TheMensHumor and @thefemalebook and hashtags like #blacktwitter and #ItsOkayToBeWhite only serve to divide us and reduce intergroup communication. These split communities cause users to gravitate to their own groups, compounded with the ability to follow only who you want (which makes sense) this not just reduces the communication but also removes the ability to see any content that doesn’t align with your views. Coupled with the possibility of being anonymous causes conflict because people will purposefully antagonize others to cause conflict between these groups where there is none. This was a problem during the 2016 Presidential election with Russian groups making accounts just to raise conflict between the two parties and their members.
There is a hefty amount of corporate interlock with Twitter’s board members. There are connections to Square, Yelp, Benchmark Capital (which invests in Twitter, Uber, Snapchat, Instagram, Yelp, Zillow and other media properties), Currie Capital, Chernin Entertainment and Chernin Group (which owns SoundCloud and makes films), as well as the online publishing platform Medium. All this seems like a huge conflict of interest as many of the board members and management team would likely do well financially no matter what because of their connections to other “competing” businesses. They can also use Twitter to boost publicity of their other ventures in order to raise stock price of both.
Although Twitter seems to be a user centered platform, the near unavoidable presence of celebrities and influencers turns it into a platform revolving around money and not public interests.
Blog Post #2: Analysis of the use of "green" in "Green Web Hosting: How does it work and what are the benefits?"
http://www.earthtimes.org/going-green/green-web-hosting-how-benefits/3022/
This article isn't from a mainstream news source but this site seems to be popular and decently well made. The topic is actually something not often thought about while discussing sustainability. The usage of the word green actually seems pretty good in this and doesn't seem to be vague for the purpose of drumming up interest. I was worried that it would be to sell some kind of internet service but upon further reading it doesn't seem to be as commercially interested as I first thought. Although it doesn't offer a necessarily new look at our relationship with the environment it offers information on something that many people don't consider. Internet and other kinds of communication utilities consume a lot of energy and it is important to cut down on this due to the widespread use of these utilities.
Blog Post #1: Walden, a Reflection
Thoreau’s relationship with nature is very spiritual. He searches for nature that hasn't been marred by human activity. He chose to go to Walden because he had an urge to learn what life had to teach him. Thoreau writes, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” What's Thoreau means by “live deliberately” is to live with a focus on your own intentions, to pick a path for yourself and stick to it while still understanding your small place in the world.
I read his writing as rather isolating, during his quest for deliberate living he finds solace in the solitary of the woods. Even though Walden pond was only about a mile away from the town he was able to find a kind of bliss in its untouched beauty. This serves to teach us that this kind of nature and beauty can be found all around us. This message is important to our progression as a society and we need to remember our natural roots so we can better appreciate the things and people in our life because one could just as easily live like Thoreau and be completely happy with our life. It makes me think about the relationship that many Arctic Circle inhabitants have with nature.
Blog Post #1: We're all Freaks
Freak: 1. A person regarded as strange because of their unusual appearance or behavior.
2. A person who is obsessed with or unusually enthusiastic about a specified interest
These definitions for the word freak encompass both ignorant and unaccepting ideas, from the first definition’s dismissal of someone's physical nature to the seconds disapproval of someone's interests simply because they are different than one's own.
Language has long been used to categorize and subjugate people. Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure wrote about the meaning behind our language and freak displays the bad kind of meaning that words can take on. The other definitions than the ones above don't vary too much in their categorization of a person/event. Social media is in a unique position of being almost solely based on language. Similar to the way any written communication can be misunderstood, even the photographic or video parts of social media can be interpreted wrong despite the best intentions.
Social media is completely about identity. Despite the landscape intending to be a true identity mimicking real life, it often, as in real life, is curated to try and display the best aspects of our life. The difference between our social media identity and our true identity is that they are received in entirely different ways. Our in person identity is sometimes shaped specifically for the people we interact with, in contrast our online identity must be curated for the entirety of our web of connection. This larger sphere of influence causes many more misunderstandings and miscommunications. It is because of these miscommunications that people seem like freaks, and granted some people may be strange to us, but that's only because social media provides a connection to them that might not happen in real life. They also may simply be unapologetic in their interests because they have less social insecurities. The quest for more connection and acceptance through a digital medium can be isolating and hurtful as you try and shape your true self to fit the representations of a “dream life” that you seek out for inspiration or justification of your own life path.
Personally this affects me by increasing my insecurity towards my self and fragments my identity into separate interests I have. My interest in gaming and my interests in history and science rarely cross over in my digital life but often are discussed in the same conversations in real life.
Blog Post #7
The music industry’s distribution tactics have changed recently, with things like Tidal, Spotify and Google/YouTube Music allowing new paths for music consumption and promotion. YouTube has also recently added an “Artist on the Rise” section on their trending page that can help an artist poke through the strong wall of mainstream labels that consumers face. Though this is good, this doesn’t feature people who are truly small artists who may actually need the boost in views. Smaller artists do have a growing role in our media, Justin Bieber, Cody Simpson, and Carly Rae Jepsen are some notable celebrities that started from YouTube and ended up making it big. Even older artists have found a way through the mainstream wall by garnering support on social media. Soulja Boy originally released his best known hit, “Crank That” online on YouTube and Myspace. Today I think the market has changed. While I think the availability of income through YouTube and other online sources has increased the ability for someone to support themselves, I think that availability has also lowered interest in these people until they have an even bigger audience than before. Creators are being looked at not just for musical talent now but are being judged based on their managerial skills and general social presence, something that previously would have been the talent management or record label’s job. Promotion of artists has arguably become easier though because of this increased focus on social awareness. This increase in that focus has caused an influx of new, talented artists that catch the ear of large artists and use their promotion to grab a record deal (Carly Rae Jepsen) or a big enough social following to get themselves on satellite radio stations (Bishop Briggs). The local music scene is still very much important, with bands like The Lumineers and Nathaniel Rateliff (Denver locals) using their strong local music scene to slingshot them into fame. I think concentrated music distribution has allowed from some people to excel because of the smaller overall audience size needed to be marketed to, but overall I think it has contributed heavily to the separation of music styles and tastes, and can leave some forms of music (Musicals and other niche markets) behind.
Improperly Rated Video Game
Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was a game that received a Teen (T) rating despite the previous games in the series being Mature (M) rated. Although the developers did change some of the content to align with the T rating, the game still largely deserved the M rating and many fans were disappointed about it not having the original content developed for the game. There is a particular Fatality in which The Joker would blow his opponent's head off with a revolver that was changed so that the decapitation wasn’t shown on camera. This and other changes caused upset in the game community because fans had become accustomed to the level of gore and violence that MK had come to be known for and many purchased the game to see that kind of grotesque violence brought to the DC Universe characters. Sadly they were disappointed. The game rating fits the content, but I disagree with the rating because it only happened because the game developers were pressured into catering to a bigger audience composed of a large amount of children and teens and instead of keep the game that was created and worked hard on, the game that fit into their series and overall vision, they butchered it for the sake of making more money and that makes me very uncomfortable to think about.
Advertising Blog
An ad I have seen recently was an ad IBM Watson. This really intrigued me because it is not often you see ads for him as he (Watson) was previously used for use in medical, engineering and large scale data-analytics. He has become immensely useful in everyday life. Watson is a computer that has been used for diagnostic purposes, medical comparisons and other kind of life saving purposes. He is also used as a basis for many AI systems online, such as chat-bots that you interact with on customer service sites. He also does visual recognition for writing, security, and behavioral analysis. It seems strange that I was getting a Watson ad since I don’t typically look up that kind of thing and I have personalized ads turned off on most websites anyway. This ad was a Sponsored Post on Facebook and was delivered to me because I and a couple friends like IBM. I also believe I also got it because I run a page for a business on Facebook. Although I didn’t click through and I am not sure what it’s CPM is and their revenue deal for that, I can imagine that getting the word out there allows them to hold a good level of public awareness (like when Watson became Jeopardy! champion). I also imagine that any of the business or corporate climates they can attract will bring in a rather large paycheck. All in all, not sure how useful the ad was, but I think the purpose of their ad isn’t as focused on the daily people as it might be to a business owner or someone who needs this kind of data analytics and AI services.
An Analysis of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Birthmark
The Birthmark is a stark and rousing story of Aylmer who struggles with a birthmark on his wife, Georgiana’s, face. Throughout the story Aylmer reaches multiple conclusions that show his continued descent into darkness and insanity. There are a couple spots in story where Aylmer mentions the allegory of Pygmalion and compares himself to Pygmalion showing his belief that he is a nigh all-powerful creator, ignoring the fact that Pygmalion was sculpting a “perfect” woman where none previously existed and Aylmer already had the perfect woman of his own.
Another theme that can be seen in this story is the belief by Aylmer that Georgiana’s outer imperfection has a base in some moral problems, that she is impure in some way and this is her punishment. Shown by the line, “[H]ere is a powerful cosmetic. With a few drops of this in a vase of water, freckles may be washed away. . . . A stronger infusion would take the blood out of the cheek, and leave the rosiest beauty a pale ghost. . . . Your case demands a remedy that shall go deeper.” This presents itself, much like the Pygmalion story, as a metaphor. This is not only signifying the White man’s burden of perfection and colonial attitude of pushing until something breaks, but can also be read to show the belief that African Americans were somehow morally or intellectually less than their white counterparts, inferring that people who don’t have clean or white skin are somehow inferior on the inside as well.
Perhaps the most important theme is that of Science vs Nature. Despite all of Aylmer's efforts to save Georgiana from a non-existent threat, he ends up creating the threat himself. Hawthorne posits that perfection is only something that can exist in heaven, this thought aligns with the story as although Aylmer cures Georgiana’s birthmark, she dies because she is now perfect and not fit for the human world. This falls in line with the rest of his experiments, each one ending worse than Aylmer expected. His quest for Georgiana’s perfection shows not only his blindness to his own faults and failures, but also that men and women are held to different values in his mind. Despite Georgiana being beautiful, generous, and kind, Aylmer ignores her clearly good morals and decides that there is some kind of deeper problem, all while she gives up her life because she loves him so much that she can’t stand to see him feel the way he does. Georgiana pays the ultimate sacrifice to uphold the ideals of her male counterpart in the way any other race in the world has sacrificed itself physically and morally for the colonization of the White Man.
After Georgiana reads Aylmer’s book of experiments, he implores her to stop reading because it might drive her mad, saying, "Georgiana, there are pages in that volume which I can scarcely glance over and keep my senses.” Her reply to this is "It has made me worship you more than ever," showing that this evidence of his imperfections and failures has made her happier with him, knowing now that he is just as imperfect as everyone else despite his displayed persona of perfect genius.
In line with the theme of Science vs Nature, Georgiana soothes Aylmer with her voice, “So she poured out the liquid music of her voice to quench the thirst of his spirit. He then took his leave with a boyish exuberance of gayety, assuring her that her seclusion would endure but a little longer, and that the result was already certain.” She sings to him to calm his spirit, the powerful force of her gift from Nature at work, contrasting the failure of Science to mend her spirit, instead killing her because it was never required to be fixed or changed.
Aylmer also focuses on eternal life. Though not central to the story he mentions that he believes there is the ability to create a potion of immortality. This is important in characterizing Aylmer, as it shows a belief that man can triumph over nature and deserves to, but it also illustrates a central weakness to Aylmer, that of an immense fear of death. This is an understandably Human fear, and it is reasonable to fear death, but Aylmer doesn’t show any of this fear when it comes to Georgiana, he merely is scared of his own death. This is a criticism of the modern human’s efforts to lengthen human life with science instead of simply improving living conditions and stopping disease. Hawthorne lived during a time of great reform, and this piece criticizes that reform as ineffective and dangerous.
Another heavy theme in the piece is that of religion. The birthmark can be seen as a symbol of the forgiven original sin that Eve, the perfect woman, made in God’s image, brought unto men. This seems to be the base of Aylmer’s struggle to appreciate her with the mark, it is a reminder of Georgiana’s ability to sin and the looming death that all humans face. There is also a very strong similarity to Matthew 7:3, where Christ is quoted as saying, "Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" This story seems to be a criticism of the Puritan culture in New England, that at the time was focused heavily on criticizing other’s problems and ignoring their own. This is something that can be said of many religions, as humans are the base of religion and it is historically uncommon for us to portray ourselves in a bad light.
Along with a focus on religion and romanticism, Hawthorne was a critic of transcendentalism and his characterizations of Aylmer and his assistant Aminadab symbolize two halves of a person. Aylmer, portraying the transcendental and intellectual part, and Aminadab portraying the physical and human parts of Aylmer. Aylmer is a cunning and often evil sounding person who essentially murders his wife, while Aminadab is a loyal, simple man that does unappealing work for the honor of working hard and appeasing someone he might look up to.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the story is that the story can be flipped to focus on Georgiana as the “doomed heroine” of the story. She lives throughout this story trying to humanize and sweeten Aylmer and to get him to be happy, ultimately giving her life for him to have some peace, which he gains at the end when he marvels that the cure worked. This story is not likely supposed to be read this way but it might be comforting to give Georgiana some agency and to change the story from one of murder to one of love and life lost for the improvement of a loved one.
From start to end the piece is symbolic and serves as a warning to people who are not happy with what they are given, as life itself is a gift to you and any people who you find that love you. The other human’s are shown as the most important parts of our world and an attempted triumph over them and Nature will only prove to doom us.
