Heartfall - Applications ongoing - more project background!
Thank you to everyone applying, and to everyone who told us they are excited to watch the project develop!
If you do not know, hello! I'm Kazehita! I am a jack of many trades, many of which I am bringing to bear for this project. Me and the fellow staff are so happy it's finally time!
Working on this project was a fulltime+ operation for myself, spending more than a dozen 60hr work weeks figuring out how to actually make a collaboration-centric game possible. From this labor arose the dialogue implementation system, the levelbuilder tool, and the game itself - its style, its intent, & its mechanics.
I hear that making custom tools to streamline a game’s development are a must in professional studios. In an attempt to imitate, I rebuilt Heartfall’s implementation systems countless times; some of my prototypes were so, so cumbersome they were truly impossible to use efficiently. Frustrating as this can be, I had already dedicated too much time to the project to give up. So I refactored again and again until I had something worth using.
However, I have to decide when enough is good enough. Having some roughness is wiser than spending half a decade on an unpaid project!
With so much time spent programming the content implementation tools, the actual mechanics in the game have to remain simple. The game is being defined as a visual novel instead of as an RPG (despite its theming) to focus on implementation stability and making the core game feature the best it can be.
Despite its seemingly narrow scope, it still remains a gargantuan task! Branching story games are commonly regarded as tedious, so the scope of this project has been narrowed to focus on this. No combat, no puzzles, the player can walk around, talk to characters, and choose their way through the story. It’s a slightly more tactile VN!
I love video games, I love 3RD Life, and I love the creativity in this community! Other wonderful people have made traffic series inspired games already, and I hope many more will too! We will see this project through!!!!
Currently, we are receiving staff and contributor applications in order to sort enthusiastic, creative (and probably unemployed/unbusy) people (like me) onto route teams. The selection process centers on matching applicants that have matching preferences into teams.
