Twisted Pair Cables: Shielded or Unshielded?
Without being an expert, it’s difficult to know which cables will be best for your network. Copper twisted-pair cables are the most popular cables in use today, and you can either choose a shielded or unshielded version. The best option for your business will largely depend on your usage requirements and the location of your premises.
Despite being inherently different in design and manufacture, the purpose of shielded and unshielded twisted-pair cables should, fundamentally, be the same: to provide reliable connectivity of your electronic equipment.
Electrical and electronic devices emit electromagnetic energy, which is sometimes referred to as radio frequency emission. These emissions are a by-product of electrical or magnetic activity. The emissions from one device can interfere with other devices, potentially leading to such problems as equipment malfunction, data loss and picture quality degradation. This is called electromagnetic interference.
Electromagnetic compatibility refers to the ability of electrical equipment to function adequately, without disturbing other equipment in the same environment. As well as emissions, levels of immunity need to be considered when determining how products should be installed in a given environment. Immunity is a measure of the systems adequacy at rejecting interference from other devices.
Due to the twisted pair design of the conductors, both shielded and unshielded cables provide a degree of protection against interference. However, the additional shielding on the shielded cables is specifically designed to reduce external interference and emissions at any point in the cable’s path. They, therefore, provide much greater protection against interference than unshielded cables.
Due to the additional materials used for the shielding, shielded cables are typically more expensive than unshielded cables. They can also be more costly on installation, since the shielding makes them more difficult to handle.
Unshielded cables will not necessarily lead to signal degradation and poor network performance, it really depends on the environment in which they are installed. When making the decision, you should think about the equipment that will be used in the surrounding environment. Shielded cables are a better option if your cabling will be installed in a demanding industrial environment, where the surrounding equipment gives off heightened amounts of electromagnetic interference. This includes settings where other types of cables are in close vicinity, such as mains supply cables etc. Also, if the cable network is located outside then shielded cables will be the best option, as they are more robust and resilient to harsh weather conditions.
Unshielded cables should be adequate for office Local Area Networks, or other similar network cabling systems.

One of our most frequently asked questions is: “How can I speed up my broadband connection?” Both from a personal and a business perspective, painfully slow broadband speeds are a common problem that is incredibly frustrating, particularly when you pay good money for your broadband service. Despite finding it impossible to get online, many people are advised by their provider that everything is working as it should be. If this is the case, we have a few handy tips that you can try.
First and foremost, you need to have a good understanding of your broadband service. The speeds that were initially advertised to you will be the maximum speeds you can expect, so it will be unlikely that you will always experience these. Domestic connections are typically shared with other users in the area, slowing down the service at peak times when there is a heavy demand on the service. Other factors will also affect the speed of your connection, such as the distance of your line from the telephone exchange. You should check the average speeds that your provider told you to expect when you signed up for the service.
Once you are clear about the speeds you should expect, you can run a broadband speedtest. This can be done online for free, using your postcode. If it turns out that your broadband speed is unreasonably low then you might have grounds for complaint. However, it may be that you are already experiencing the maximum speeds your line can expect. Alternatively, slow speeds could have something to do with your set-up. Always make sure that your wireless network is password protected, to prevent other from draining your bandwidth. Make sure that you have up-to-date anti-virus software installed, as viruses can also drain your bandwidth. And, make sure that you reboot your router on a monthly basis to clear up any issues it may have.
Signals can be disrupted by electrical interference from other equipment. You should always try to keep your router as high up as possible and away from obstacles. If possible, find out where your neighbours keep theirs and try to put yours in a part of the house that is well away from theirs.
Finally, if you are using an extension cable, this could significantly increase interference on the line and lower your speeds. Instead, connect the router directly to the phone socket and use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the router. If you must use an extension cable, make sure that it is new, high-quality and the shortest possible length.
