INTRO POST
this is a blog for sharing stuff about my original characters who belong to my story called Midnight Guardians. here I will post drawings and lore in a (hopefully) more coherent way than I do on my main blog. this blog is ran by @ernycek , I use he/him pronouns.
PREMISE:
after a college student named Rowan Young doesn't show up at his band's rehearsal and is found dead, his bandmates Aster Allegri and Iris Woodward try to solve the murder on their own, feeling that the police doesn't believe their suspicions of a pattern of murders happening in the area whenever there is a full moon. the two soon gain new allies and find themselves involved in the city's web of crime, as they discover that the mystery goes much deeper than they thought. they also go from being just amateur "detectives" to the city's protectors as they get taken under the wing of a mentor who was herself once a hero, but is now hiding for... reasons. The sudden rise of a new crime-fighting organization also happens to raise the suspicion of an organization called Faceless, the one already considered to have this role.
SETTING:
Moonrise Peaks is a city of contrasts. Situated near the mountains it attracts the rich with its picturesque views. Despite it being home to a lot of influencial and affluent families, the poorest and most struggling parts of society are just as apparent in it. Both of these sides detest each other and yet both are affiliated with the many criminal organizations in the area - which the city is infamous for.
the name of the city references an old legend which speaks of spirits coming down from the mountains every full moon and seeking sacrifice in the form of humans. most people see this legend as just a story made to scare kids, and yet some have taken it seriously, organizing a cult around it. the cult performed a group suicide at the time of a rare phenomenon in the sky, which still remains in the city's consciousness as one of its most tragic events. it may even be connected to one of the city's gangs...
(the setting is also realistic in the sense that there is no magic or superpowers, if anything there are very subtle sci-fi elements)
THEMES:
I'm not gonna pretend that I am making anything greatly profound, it's just a silly superhero story to occupy my brain. but upon thinking about it I did realize that there are certain themes I want to explore through my story. they are:
- self-discovery, facing the doubts that many young people deal with when entering adulthood (so matters of independence, identity and relationships for example), learning how to be your authentic self
- some social commentary about being in power, wealth and social dynamics (idk how well I can show that but I can't deny that these themes exist in my story)
