Captain Curtis' turning point was when the rest of the brass dragged him to The Tops to see a live show, and he begrudgingly obliged – good to build rapport right?
It wasn't until the bands started playing that Curtis realised he had never heard live music before. Sure he has heard Sinatra's hits on the radio, both at McCarran and (probably) at the Fort, but he has never felt the sound travel through the air and into his body.
He had a wave of frisson come over him, and spent the night trying to hide his tears, of which he never understood. That night haunts him, he saw himself as weak – crying over music, it was pathetic for a legionary, let alone a frumentarius. Yet he wants to feel that again. Perhaps it reminded him of a time before he was taken into the Legion, or maybe how his mother used to sing so quietly into his ear when he found it hard to sleep.
Curtis understood there that there was much more to life he never understood, why hide music? How could something like that break through the impenetrable forces he set up himself? Something so powerful that made him feel weak.
He was fascinated with it, and what else did the Legion hide from him, and so, he made plans to leave. He'd depart from both the Legion and the NCR, and try find other forces that shake him to his core. He owed it to someone, whether it be his mother, his ancestors, or even himself.
He'll never get that though, not on my watch
