There is something inexplicably hilarious to me about the entire TRC fandom being able to draw an ace-coded interpretation about nearly every character - Blue and Gansey always read very ace spectrum coded to me, one could argue Ronan is on a demisexual wavelength (or he's just catholic), aroace Henry interpretations, Noah gets a lot of asexual headcanons too.

Adam, though? We've all collectively agreed that that motherfucker is ready to fucking go. no, because gaunt sees beauty in ellwood even after the war because he has always seen both beauty and ugliness. in chapter one: ‘ellwood had never been interested in ugliness’ and gaunt ‘feared ugliness was too important to ignore’. where ellwood sees ugliness as the lack of beauty, gaunt sees beauty in spite of ugliness. gaunt has seen ugliness both before and after the war such that ellwood’s beauty lies in the fact that he is alive and with him. ellwood is beautiful because every day gaunt gets to wake up next to him, instead of mourning him.

the more I read in memoriam the more I feel gaunt is autistic (or neurodivergent in some way)

- his special interest is thucydides and the peloponnesian war obviously: he takes a copy to the front, he can quote it, he talks about it nonstop and everyone (elly) wishes he wouldn't, he finds a way to make every conversation about the Greeks

-he struggles with socialising/making friends

I find it interesting how both Ellwood and Gaunt's injuries reflect what's most important to them. Ellwood's face wound and loss of an eye costs him his beauty and good looks, while Gaunt's chest wound loses him his strength and physical fitness.

but also that these traits are not important to the other person. Gaunt's love for Ellwood doesn't come from his handsome face - he loves his poetry, his passionate spirit.

likewise the moments Ellwood feels closest to Gaunt are those of emotional intimacy, where Gaunt shares his feelings in a way he wouldn't with anyone else - not his feats of strength or impenetrable toughness. he loves his vulnerability.

I like to think that the other's wholehearted acceptance is what helps piece themselves back together after the war

the parallel between these two scenes haunts me at night because you have ellwood mouthing i love you quietly to gaunt where he couldn't have seen or understood it but it was enough for those words to just exist somewhere, they weren't heard but they were clear in what they were. and on the other you have gaunt also saying i love you in the truest way possible to himself: he hid behind ellwood as a nickname for so long, avoided even uttering his name because of what that meant and how he couldn't have allowed for any feelings of his to shine through until he finds himself saying it over and over, both holding eachother tightly and desperate to be seen by the other person
