Students and Professional Comic Writers are Taking Their Comic Anthology, Spitball, to S.P.A.C.E
At the Columbus College of Art and Design, 9 talented students have been paired up with well-known writers such as Matt Fraction, Lora Innes, Jen Van Meter, Kate Leth, Noelle Stevenson, Christopher Sebela, Karl Bollers, Ivan Brandon, and Dara Naraghi to create the visually stunning and infinitely unique comic anthology, Spitball, and it’s coming to the indie comic expo, S.P.A.C.E.!
Spitball is composed of 9 exclusive 5-page comics, illustrated by the up-and-coming comic artists of CCAD. Each student was carefully selected to work on the project and to bring an interesting, wide-range of styles. Not only are these students dedicated to the industry, but offer their own distinct perspective into their craft.
“The collaborative nature of this method not only makes it more realistic concerning what it would be like to work in the industry, but also offers a fresh perspective,” says CCAD student Chris Passabet about working on his comic. “I was honored to work with Matt Fraction. It was interesting adapting my own style to fit the story that he wanted to tell.”
The prospective comics artists worked hand-in-hand with their writers to help make each individual story come to life. Whether comedy or drama, magical girls or torture chambers, Spitball has something for everyone to enjoy!
“We really wanted the name of the anthology to reflect what we were doing,” says CCAD student, Lee Meyers, who partnered with author Dara Naraghi, “It’s a back-and-forth collaboration between artists and writers, but it’s also a mix of stories from completely different genres. It’s just an amazing mash-up of everything! So, ‘spitball’ was the only thing that fit.”
