Anything that isn’t critical in the moment, and could be filled in later while I’m currently trying to burn through writing pages that will be lost if I don’t get them out right now? Brackets.

This is seriously the best advice, and it really helps put it into perspective that the first draft is just that- a draft. There’s no reason to agonize over a particularly tricky bit of writing when you could just leave it in brackets and skip to the good parts, the parts you’ve visualized. I also use brackets for [fact-check this], [use a stronger verb], [is this in character?] and other notes as I write, just so I don’t forget what I want to work on when I go back and edit.

This works for academic writing too. If you know where you’re going just leave yourself notes to fill in later. I do this all the time,

WOMEN’S HISTORY ☀ AZARMIDOKHT  (unknown – 631)

Azarmidokht (“آزرمی‌دخت” in Persian) was the daughter of Khosrow II of the Sasanian Empire and an unknown mother, possibly Khosrow’s favorite wife, Shirin, or a concubine. Her father was deposed in 628 by his nobles in favor of his son, Kavadh II. Shortly after coming to the throne, Kavadh ordered the execution of all his brothers so there would be no one to challenge him. Unfortunately, Kavadh lived only a few months more and died of the plague. He was succeeded by his young son, Ardashir III, who spent less than a year on the throne before being murdered by supporters of Farrukh Hormizd, a Ispahbudhan nobleman.

With no other children of Khosrow alive, Farrukh Hormizd put Azarmidokht’s sister or half-sister, Boran or Porandokht, on the throne. However, she was deposed shortly afterwards by her cousin, Shapur-i Shahrvaraz, who was deposed himself not long after. In order to seize power, Farrukh Hormizd promised to put Azarmidokht on the throne if she agreed to marry him. She agreed, having no other options. In 631, however, she and Siyavakhsh had Farrukh murdered. In revenge, Farrukh’s son, Rostam Farrokhzād, had Azarmidokht killed not long after and put Porandokht back on the throne.
