How to write a Twist!!
─ · · Plant it early. the reader should be able to flip back afterward and go "oh my god, it was always there." If your detective's suspicious sidekick has been quietly wearing gloves in every single scene and you never explain why until the reveal that he's been embezzling evidence with his fingerprints, that's planting.
─ · · A good twist recontextualizes what came before, it doesn't just surprise you. it should make you want to reread the whole book with new eyes, not just go "wow, didn't see that coming" and move on. Think about the reveal that the wise old mentor character has been slowly poisoning the tea he keeps offering the hero "for their nerves," and suddenly every single scene where he's hovering with a teapot reads completely differently.
─ · · Avoid twists that exist purely to shock. They should change the actual stakes, not just the facts on paper. "The butler did it" only works if the butler having done it changes something meaningful.
─ · · Give the reader enough information to almost guess it. Too obvious and it feels predictable, too hidden and it feels like cheating, like the author pulled a fact out of thin air at the last second. If your protagonist's "identical twin sister who conveniently shows up in the final act" was never mentioned once in three hundred pages, that's not a twist, that's the author panicking in the last chapter.
─ · · Let your characters react the way real people actually would. Shock, denial, anger, whatever fits, don't skip past their reaction just to rush to the next plot beat. If someone just found out their best friend has secretly been a government spy this whole time, they don't get to just say "huh, WILD" and immediately move on to planning the next heist. Give the "wait, so was ANY of it real" moment its actual page time.

you need to understand that i have two sets of headcanons. there's the set of realistic headcanons based on my genuine reading of the show, and then there's me playing pretend with my dolls.
It's not a name, I'm not immortal, and while I am very good at what I do, if-when I die, they got some other poor shmuck ready to be my replacement, it's a title so no that's not my name. I look up and see my companions shocked expressions.

having 2 ongoing fics where they're both wips, and one of them having not been updated since may while the other had 2 chapters updated recently but the recent one received a comment and i accidentally made a claim i didn't follow through with (updating with a new chapter), and i was in the middle of updating the older fic first, but now feeling bad that i haven't updated the recent one yet bcs of that promise, and so now i'm stuck in a perpetual loop of "gotta write gotta write" but that also doesn't include another draft wip that i've been focusing on more, so now i'm suffering in actuality with 3 ongoing wips, but actually, that's a lie, because i found old fics that i kinda like and want to bring all together into one universe and work on that one because the premises are so much more fun, but i still have to fulfill that promise, but then there's also that old wip that i want to update and have thoughts on, but i also have the other 2 that have my braincells, but i gotta finish the other first and then there's other ideas i've been having and i also kinda want to rewrite my whole 3 hiatus fic just to make it make more sense but also i haven't—
