Getting Back On Top!

Hey ladies!  As we wait for a few more people to sign up for the 90 day challenge I thought I would catch you up on my post baby fitness journey.  It’s plateaued! I blame it on the fact heading into the summer I started a new office job and we switched from 8 hour work shifts five days a week to 10 hour work shifts four days a week.  Sitting for 10 hours not moving and, welp, snacking more than I ever have has caused my metabolism to slow down.  

The closer and closer my vacation got the more fat and out of shape I started to feel.  Vacation arrived and I kicked it into high gear. I spent every moment outside doing something active.  We went kayaking on the Potomac River, zip lining and climbing through ropes courses in West Virginia, swimming every evening, and going for 6 mile hikes up the mountains. I also wasn’t snacking.  I was making sure I was eating healthier and really giving myself a jump start to get my metabolism back to where it was before I began my new position.

I have been back for almost a week now and am happy to say I haven’t been snacking, BUT, my activity level is still non-existent while at work/during the week. I couldn’t take it any longer and decided to try workouts specifically made for office spaces.  Below is the workout I did today. I was surprised at the small burn I felt afterwards.  I didn’t expect to feel anything.  If nothing else it was encouraging to think I could find something to do during my breaks that will keep the 85 lbs. I worked so hard to lose off.  

If you are wanting to be a little more active while at work or you’re just plain bored.  Keep checking back. I will be sporadically posting the video’s I find and like the most.

A Journey To Financial Freedom

Now that Lent has arrived what better time to begin a financial journey.  Really anytime is a good time to step off the hamster wheel of poor money management. If you are anything like me you’re saying to yourself, “where do I even begin ... this monster will be the death of me!”  So five years ago I decided to enlist the help of a financial adviser. He was great!  We sat down, looked at what I owed, what bills I had, how much I made, my goals, etc. Then we allocated the money to each item.  I was doing great, then out of nowhere I fell off the wagon.  Five years later I’m ready to give it another try. Trying to get your finances right after doing it wrong for so long is like a drug addict getting sober.  It’s hard, sometimes painful, and you have to want to do it.  Don’t worry we are going to take this journey together.

When I decided to get back on the path to financial freedom I first pulled my credit.  There are plenty of places that offer your credit score.  Personally I use Credit Karma and Discover’s My Scorecard.  Credit Karma is usually off by 50 or so points.  If you keep that in mind you should be fine.  

The second thing I did was sit down and look at my budget.  Before with my adviser, we used the envelope method and Dave Ramsey’s Snowballing Debt Method.  I wanted to do the same thing again.  This time I found an app called Mvelopes that let me do the system virtually.  

Finally I spent a month logging how I spent every dollar.  This might seem silly if you are following your budget, but logging gum, bottled water, a lunch here and there starts to add up.  The small things are usually what keeps us living paycheck to paycheck or on that hamster wheel of debt.

Pulling our credit reports

Creating a budget

Logging everything we spend money on

Wooooo … you walked through the door and caught me by surprise.  I wasn’t looking for love.  Mister we had fun dancing after dinner in the dining room.  Mister I lived for Sunday afternoons when we would watch football on the couch together after church.  Mister you knew I was broken.  Why did you have to pour salt in my wounds with your lies?  Why did you have to break me even more?  Mister you played out your own sick fantasy, got permission, but you didn’t know just how broken I was.  Mister, I would never go down that aisle again …

Oh Mister!  The laughter, the adventures, the tears, the ache.  Mister you were my first love, puppy love … my first heartbreak.  Mister you were my final lesson in heartache.  Love isn’t wild …

Mister you made my heart sigh like a person sighs after arriving home from a long road trip.  You were a breath of fresh air on a sunny spring day.  You were sunflowers and sunshine.  I finally found my calm.  Someone I wanted to stand in love with not just fall in love with.  You were my first … the first person I wanted to kiss.  The first person I ached to hold my hand.  The first person to make me feel safe to be me.  The first person I loved fearlessly.  This, Mister, this was worth the eight years.  Now I know love.

There is a wolf in me . . . fangs pointed for tearing gashes . . . a red tongue for raw meat . . . and the hot lapping of blood—I keep this wolf because the wilderness gave it to me and the wilderness will not let it go.    

There is a fox in me . . . a silver-gray fox . . . I sniff and guess . . . I pick things out of the wind and air . . . I nose in the dark night and take sleepers and eat them and hide the feathers . . . I circle and loop and double-cross. There is a hog in me . . . a snout and a belly . . . a machinery for eating and grunting . . . a machinery for sleeping satisfied in the sun—I got this too from the wilderness and the wilderness will not let it go. There is a fish in me . . . I know I came from salt-blue water-gates . . . I scurried with shoals of herring . . . I blew waterspouts with porpoises . . . before land was . . . before the water went down . . . before Noah . . . before the first chapter of Genesis. There is a baboon in me . . . clambering-clawed . . . dog-faced . . . yawping a galoot’s hunger . . . hairy under the armpits . . . here are the hawk-eyed hankering men . . . here are the blonde and blue-eyed women . . . here they hide curled asleep waiting . . . ready to snarl and kill . . . ready to sing and give milk . . . waiting—I keep the baboon because the wilderness says so. There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want . . . and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanooga's of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.
