does anyone remember the amc show interview with the vampire? one of the greatest things television gave us in its era. heartbreaking that it ended after two seasons when those characters were so beautifully crafted. i really wish we couldāve had more.

I think I speak for everyone in this fandom when I say that we need Black writers back in the writerās room.
The Black writers for seasons 1-2 of IWTV were Ben Philippe, David B Harris, and A. Zell Williams.
These are the men responsible for providing substance and depth to the Black characters in the first two seasons, mainly Louis and Claudia. They knew how to tackle struggle, injustices, history, rage, pain, and the ugly truth of American and European Black history. They didnāt pull punches with the hard stuff and they knew how to work with the soft stuff.
Season 3 tried to create edgy content and humor without these men and absolutely failed at it in every way possible. And they have failed both Louis and Claudia.
The Black jokes about Louis being āLouisiana Fried Chickenā, Louis continuing to be the pimp and needing his White savior that is Lestat, Claudiaās entire monologue about Louis being a literal slave to Lestat in that old Louisiana accent. And not to mention the complete erasure of Lemuel after only a couple episodes.
Itās not working.
If thereās gonna be Black actors on screen, there needs to be Black writers in the writerās room.
someone needs to go to the comic con later this month and beg rolin jones and mark johnson to rehire the Black writers AND hire more Black writersāespecially Black AMERICAN writers; especially Black american WOMEN writers.
the thought i keep coming back to with the finale, and this season in general, is a sense ofā¦ infestation, i guess is the best way to describe it. because for the first two seasons, iwtv was a work thatā even with all its gothic/horror themesā seemed deeply compassionate at its core, and it remained devoted to beauty and love in a way that felt like a reprieve from (even a small rebellion against) the rising fascism of the culture surrounding it. and now it feels like the hatefulness it was pushing back against has infested it somehow, like a swarm of fuckin termites, which has not only ruined this season but also calls into question the structural soundness of what came before it. like, how did we even get here? was this sort of mean-spirited derision always just lying in wait? idk. i donāt want to make a bad season of tv deeper than it is, but it does feel like witnessing another loss in the cultural battle when a careful, compassionate work that ostensibly cared about the marginalised experiences it depicted becomes just another conduit for hatred toward vulnerable groups. what a fucking bummer, man

media literacy includes understanding why a media product was made, to whom it's being sold, and the assumed preferences of its marketing demographic. narrative is not produced or sold in a vacuum.
you might be totally correct that your ship would be narratively satisfying. I don't know, I'm not watching your show. Whether your ship is likely to happen on the show is a whole different question to whether it's satisfying, because the show is being sold to Netflix or Amazon or the BBC, and they are purchasing a show they think they can market to a particular demographic and that demographic isn't you, the nightmarishly online tumblr user. The show is being made for marketability to a constructed average viewer. It is being funded with that audience in mind. This art is being made to commission, and commissioned art is art, but at some point you have to stop expecting the Church to commission a statue of Lucifer fucking St Michael. It might be narratively satisfying, but that's just not what they're paying for.
