@mintharastherapist
I think people need to understand just how unsure Minthara is in terms of negative emotions. There are things that we witness her feeling at the start of canon that she’s never felt before. She’s never felt these things back home because she’s never needed to.
She is high born, she is literally drow royalty. She is sought after, mind, and body, her allegiance was literally the stuff to brag about amongst the gossipers.
Now? Now she feels anxiety, and paranoia, and insecurity. Especially insecurity around her sense of self after losing the religion she dedicated her life to, her status, her home. These are things she never felt before.
And also loneliness. She has never really been alone. Until now. She had never really been in a position in which she wasn't the most valued or sought after person in the room. She's also never been in a place where people don't truly understand her and don't connect with her. Makes sense why she warms up to a Lolth-sworn drow Tav more than any other race cause she feels that another drow understands her better and is the least likely to judge her for her values and perception of the world.
She doesn't really feel like she's actually one with the team and is just someone who got brought along out of pity. Even at the end of the game, she actually feels that everyone hangs out together without her and that they don't like her. The girl is desperate to connect with them, but she's too stubborn to admit it and does nothing about it, creating a self fulfilling cycle. If you choose to disband the group on the pier, she'll even have a line where it sounds like she's on the verge of tears and says that you and the others are all she has and she otherwise has nowhere else to go. Her default ending of going into the Underdark if you don't romance her is so sad because she is leading a campaign against her house and Lolth entirely alone. A campaign in which she feels she may die in and she'll die alone.
It's not so surprising how hard she clings to you. When you save her from Moonrise, she begs you like 3 or 4 times to keep her close and then later on again in regards to Orin. I think this is part self preservation and another part desperation to just not be alone. When you do romance her, she clings to you so fucking hard cause you are literally all that she has. You are the only one in the world that she knows actually likes her and wants her around.

Hey rb this!!!
One thing I haven't seen people talk about is how adaptable and resilient Minthara is. Beyond her steadfast loyalty to you, when she finds herself in any situation, regardless of her liking it or not, she adapts. Yes, she's scared and gets frustrated when you don't do something the way she would have wanted you to, but she accepts it and goes with it.
She adapts to sharing camp with people so vastly different to her. She adapts to living a life having lost her goddess and her old way of life. Even if you are good-aligned and every decision you make goes against her ambitions, she stays nonetheless and moves forward. If you stay with her in Baldur's Gate after defeating the Netherbrain, she will adapt to life on the surface. If you go to the Underdark with her, she will adapt to living a life in constant threat of being killed. The same in Avernus if she decides to go with Karlach.
It would be all too easy for a woman of her background to not be able to adapt to a life so vastly different to her upbringing, but she does it nonetheless. Perhaps out of loyalty to you, yes, but also because of her unshakeable resilience and ability to accept any situation, no matter how dire, and make it work for her.
I think Minthara's fear as a catalyst for her need for power is /such/ good writing and it is a consistent trait that the player sees throughout her story. I see her mischaracterized as a stone cold killing machine but basically every opportunity you get to have a one on one she reveals how terrified she really is
At her confession scene, you push into her mind and the first things you feel are fear and loss of identity. She's lost her Gods, she lost her station, and she's vulnerable to losing you.
I had to pass an insight check just to make her admit she's scared of orin because she's was too scared to acknowledge that
I get why she wants to become a god and pushes others to accept the favours of gods despite her own position. Its not about being righteous its about winning and she's backed into a corner. Thats just how any desperate person would operate
So, I'm in the middle of typing up a mini essay about fandom opinion about Minthara and how she is often mischaracterized, especially by those who do not know her. One of the points that I bring up in that essay is that she is the most loyal companion. Then, I really started to question to myself, how exactly is Minthara the most loyal?
Shadowheart will leave your party if you don't take her to confront the Nightsong. Astarion will leave your party if you refuse to help him at all with the ascension ritual. Lae'zel will leave the party if you try to leave the creche without going into the Astral Prism and you fail to convince her to trust you. Wyll and Karlach will leave the party if you raid the grove. I believe Wyll may also leave in regards to a very specific outcome with his dad, but I can't find anything to confirm this. Gale will leave the party if you fail to convince him to stay after the grove raid, or you fail to stabilize his orb by the end of Act 2. Halsin will leave the party if you fail to resolve the Shadow Curse by the end of Act 2. Jaheira will leave the party if Minsc dies, or if Durge accepts Bhaal. Minsc will leave the party if Durge accepts Bhaal.
But there is not a single decision you can make that will make Minthara leave your party. Once she is there, she is there for good. You can make whatever stupid decision you want, good or evil, and she'll still be right there. You can make whatever decision she disagrees with, and she'll still be right there. You can leave her behind in camp when confronting Ketheric or Orin (even after she begs you to take her with you), and she'll still be right there. You can blow up the Netherbrain, and she'll still be right there. You can literally be the nicest do-gooder in the world, and she will still be right fucking there. She might be irritated, but she'll still be right there.
You literally have to purposefully drive her away to get her to leave, and that can only be done by getting her affinity deep into the negatives. And even the most morally good of players won't be able to naturally do that on their own. You have to go out of your way and purposefully choose every option that will piss her off. So, as long as you're not an asshole to her, she will stay by your side no matter what.
That's what I love about BG3 and the subversion of tropes. The one companion who will stick with you through thick and thin, is the "evil" one. The one companion who will never betray you in any way, is the "evil" one (which is ironic as she comes from a culture that is all about betraying the ones closest to you). You can recruit all 10 companions and have all of them leave your party at some point, and the only one who won't, is the "evil" one.
This is no longer just an opinion of mine. It is a fact, Minthara is canonically the most loyal companion. She will always stand by you no matter what you do, even if she hates the things you're doing.
I would give her the world, paid with blood and gold.
I just wanted to draw Minthara and ended up with a whole ass Underdark scene 😬
Close up
Minthara will just say things like this!?? Am so unprepared 🥺
After 200+ hours bumbling around Faerûn, I thought it was time for an update with *all* the companions.
