Yellow Downy Violet

Yellow Downy Violet is a native species of violet found throughout North America. Yellow Downy Violet can be found in mesic woodlands or sometimes meadows; from Minnesota and Ontario to Nova Scotia, South to Virginia. Downy Yellow Violet produces two different types of flowers during the season including chasmogamous flowers in the early spring and cleistogamous flowers in summer through autumn. The species name 'pubescens' means downy-haired. Similar looking species to the yellow downy violet include round-leaved yellow violet, viola rotundifolia. The two species can be differentiated by leaf shape and leaf margin. Woolly Blue Violet is a short-stemmed herbaceous perennial plant that is native to eastern North America. Woolly Blue Violet is an important food source for the caterpillars of fritillary butterflies. The plants also serve as food for wild turkeys, rabbits, deer, livestock, the mourning dove, the bobwhite, and the white-footed mouse. Woolly Blue Violet is the state flower of Illinois, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Wisconsin. The common blue violet is also called the “lesbian flower” because in the early 1900s, lesbian women would give violets to the women they were wooing. Canada White Violet is a species of flowering plant in the violet family. It is widespread across much of Canada and the United States, from Alaska to Newfoundland, and south as far as Georgia and Arizona. Purple Spotted Jewelweed

Spotted Jewelweed, Impatiens capensis, is an annual plant native to North America. Spotted Jewelweed is common in bottomland soils, ditches, and along creeks, often growing side-by-side with its less common relatives Yellow Jewelweed as well as Pale Spotted Jewelweed. The species name "capensis", meaning "of the cape", is actually a misnomer, as Nicolaas Meerburgh was under the mistaken impression that it was native to the Cape of Good Hope, in southern Africa. Wild Columbine

Wild Columbine is an herbaceous perennial native to woodland and rocky slopes in eastern North America, prized for its red and yellow flowers. It readily hybridizes with other species in the genus Aquilegia. The plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merrit. The genus name may have been derived from the latin word aquila, "eagle," a possible reference to the spurs. Giant Blue Cohosh

Giant Blue Cohosh is a species of flowering plant in the barberry family. It is native primarily to northeastern North America, where it is found in moist rich forests. Giant Blue Cohosh is known for its large triple-compound leaf, and large blue, berry-like fruits. Unlike many spring wildflowers, it is not an ephemeral plant and persists throughout much of the summer. Winter aconite is a yellow flowering spring plant in the buttercup family. Winter aconite is native to the woodlands of Europe across Asia to Japan and has become an introduced species in the North East areas of North America. Winter aconite is valued in cultivation as one of the earliest of all flowers to appear in the spring. The Latin name eranthis hyemalis means "winter-flowering". Wild Ginger, Asarum canadense, is a is a herbaceous perennial plant in the birthwort family. Wild Ginger forms dense colonies in the under story of rich deciduous forests throughout its native range in eastern North America, from the Great Plains east to the Atlantic Coast, and from southeastern Canada south to approximately the fall line in the southeastern United States. Wild Ginger is protected as a state threatened species in Maine. The word "asarum" is the Latin and Greek name for wild ginger. Trout Lily

Trout Lily is a species of spring ephemeral flower native to North America and dwelling in woodland habitats. Trout Lily forms large colonies in moist woodlands and blooms in the early spring. Trout lily blooms in early spring before the trees growing above it develop leaves, this allows it to have unobstructed access to sunlight and also allows it to grow when soil nutrient levels are high. Twinleaf

Twinleaf is part of a small genus of plants, under the name jeffersonia, which is a member of the barberry family. Twinleaf is an uncommon spring wildflower which grows in limestone soils of rich deciduous forests. Jeffersonia was named for United States President Thomas Jefferson, by his contemporary Benjamin Smith Barton. This genus was formerly grouped in genus Podophyllum. Siberian Squill

Siberian Squill is a species of spring flowering plant that was formally placed in the Hyacinth family and moved, in 2009, to the asparagus family. Siberian Squill is native to the southwestern region of Russia, The Caucasus, and Turkey. The latin name of the genus scilla is named after the goddess Scylla of Greek mythology, a beauty who was tuned into a terrible sea monster. Pitch Pine is a small to medium sized hard pine, native to Eastern North America. This species occasionally hybridizes with other pine species such as loblolly pine, short leaf pine, and pond pine. Pitch Pine is found mainly in the southern areas of the northeastern United States, from coastal Maine and Ohio to Kentucky and northern Georgia. Snowdrop

The common snowdrop, Galanthus Nivalis, is the best-known and most widespread of the twenty species in Galanthus genus. Snowdrops are among the first bulbs to bloom in spring and can form impressive carpets of white in areas where they are native or have been naturalized. They should not be confused with group of flowers called snowflakes, in the genera Leucojum and Acis. Monkshood is grown in gardens for its attractive spike like inflorescence and showy blue flowers; however, care should be taken when planting monkshoods due to the substantial toxicity of the plant.
