Some things about Loki I found interesting while reading through the screenplay for the first Thor movie today
When Thor is late to his own ceremony Odin automatically looks at Loki, implying he's used to having Loki essentially babysit Thor and know what he's doing when Odin himself doesn't
Loki is also well aware of the favouritism Odin has for Thor. It's not even necessarily a bitter statement, he's just saying it because it's true
I'm a believer in the theory that Loki was under mind control and/or forced into the attack on New York in Avengers and this makes me believe it even more. Loki wouldn't be stupid enough to outright attack a massive city without much planning if he was in charge, he seems to like planning and coordination a lot more than what we see in Avengers
Also I think Loki truly didn't mean to get Thor banished. He mentioned earlier that Odin always forgives Thor and likely assumed he would get away with this too, he just wanted to not die
To further prove my point, Loki didn't even realize that the title of king would default to him if Thor wasn't there and Odin was unable to rule. He is genuinely shocked when the title is offered to him
For the grand finale of this post I offer up the pure angst that is Loki letting himself fall (presumably thinking he'd die) only after realizing Odin still isn't proud of him in any way :(
