Adult Transgender Legislative Risk Map, November 2024
This map is made and maintained by transgender journalist Erin Reed. She read all 550 bills targeting trans people in America in 2023 and 586 so far in 2024 and she scores state safety based on proposed and enacted legislation. She regularly updates the map (including explanations of recent legislative changes) on her site. She has a separate map for trans youth (which: warning, is even more scary), since a lot of policies target minors specifically.
It’s depressing as all hell, but Erin does great work and I’ve been using her maps to plan my career and vacations for years. It’s helped me figure out where to apply for grad school, and helps me keep track of what states I cannot do a layover in while flying because of bathroom bills.

⭐️SOON⭐️
i hate this weird trend in fandom where subtext is seen as a Bad Thing and is only done if the creators are too cowardly to commit to showing something. i hate to break it to you but nuance and layers are what make stories interesting, if you have no subtext then you have a very flat story
sometimes things are subtext because they don’t quite fit the tone of the story, or because the story isn’t about that (and if they showed it outright they would have to take time to explore it), or sometimes the characters aren’t ready to face it, or sometimes subtext is just the right choice for this specific story, or SOMETIMES it’s just fun and interesting to have underlying themes and implications!!!!
also just because it’s subtext doesn’t mean it’s not deliberate or not meant to be part of the story. “well if they WANTED it to be canon they should’ve SAID SO” some of us can understand implications. some of us enjoy thinking about the media we consume and don’t just want everything handed to us on a silver platter. “wow i can’t believe the writers didn’t even realize what this implies” im going to beat you to death with hammers
Indeed. I hate to break it to people, but prose writers are, in fact, supposed to include sub-textual elements and underlying themes because otherwise their story is gonna read like a picture book or, at best, a screenplay. Great for picture books and screenplays, not so great for a 300 page novel.
(Also, if you don't like subtext, you should probably steer clear of poetry entirely. )
I could not not share this.

if your favorite hockey player was a type of animal, which animal would he be?
rat 🐀 - he’s the rat king running this city
mouse 🐁 - he belongs in my pocket nibbling on cheese
big cat 🦁 - he’s a goalie
house cat 🐈 - he’s a chill quiet guy
puppy 🐶 - he’s got that dog in him (and it’s a cute dog!)
beautiful mythical creature 🦄 - not even sure he’s real
bird 🦜- he’s always chirping (but he’s a lover, not a fighter)
kangaroo 🦘- very fun guy (but also ready to fight at any given moment)
some kind of large friendly animal 🐘🐋🦒
some kind of happy goofy animal 🐣🦩🐬
a very specific/individual answer that only applies to him (ex. otter 🦦)
something else/not sure
Listen, if you're a Kings fan, you don't even need to read the options to know the animal.
Religious art leaves out the best part and it’s such a goddamn shame. Livestock, Agriculture and Food is an integral part of any culture and we all need to be pushing for more realistic sheep in religious art. #FATTAILSFORJESUS
“How think ye? If a man have a hundred sheep and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains and listen for the clappeth of it’s itinerant cheeks?” - Matthew 18:12, the bible
CLAPPETH….
I made this post a long time ago and never posted the follow up post, so here it is. Additional info on Fat tail sheep
Fat tailed sheep is not a single specific breed of sheep. It’s a catchall word like “Health care worker”.
There’s tons and tons of different breeds. They all store fat in their tails, but fall into two main categories: WIDE tails and LONG tails
Wide tails store fat in the rump area and have no visible tails.
Long tails store fat in the tail itself, which vary in length in different breeds. In the olden days, people took pride in breeding sheep with the longest tail. They are not so popular today as it’s hard to find a decent tail cart on Amazon.
Speaking of Tail carts, they come in different styles and designs. We dont have any that are actually preserved, but old drawing of them show different wheels harnesses.
Some of them are literally just skateboards
Back in the day, breeding sheep with long dragging tails was all the rage. Nowadays different tails types have been developed to prevent them from dragging their tails on the ground. Such as the “folded tail” or the “Only fat at the base” Tail
Despite fat tail sheep being the most common sheep breeds in the world, most people in the west have never heard of them. The West likes Wool Sheep. Fat tails are strictly meat sheep and have little useful wool. They also do poorly in colder climates
There’s a huge community of shepherds on youtube that script, choreograph and shoot elaborate videos for their sheep complete uplifting music to highlight their best qualities (for sale and stud) It is fantastic. Such as this one:
People kept bringing up Fat Bottomed Girls. Ya’ll are wrong. These are fat bottomed BOYS. Sheep are often continuously bred, so the females are constantly getting pregnant, giving birth and nursing.
That’s very hard on the body, so they can’t build up as much fat as the boys.
The fattest sheep, the ones with the truly VAST tails, rocking them little carts are ALWAYS males.
This is why the Bible specifically states that ONLY the rumps of the Males are to fit to be offered to the lord……
Picture: God desiring the tail
“And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire unto the LORD; the fat thereof, and the WHOLE rump” -Leviticus 3:9
I mean… look.
Arguably these are just minor details and doesnt matter….
But beyond it’s teachings the bible is also a work of literature about life in the ancient world. And on some level these kinds of small details bring a sort of richness to these depictions of real…
Ancient people bred out sheep with huge butts, took the largest sheep butts, set them on fire and prayed over the burning butt. It checks out.
How can hilarious big butt sheep have existed for millenia and escaped being well known in popular culture everywhere. They’ve gotten off scot free for too long. Meme these fools at once.
HR 9495 is going back up for voting. All non-profit orgs are in danger.
Under H.R. 9495, any tax-exempt organization that criticizes the government could have its status stripped away arbitrarily by a designation
The Committee on Rules is meeting at 1600 EST on 18 Nov 2024. The agenda includes HR 9495.
If this bill passes, the Secretary of the Treasury would have the power to strip any non-profit group of it's tax-exempt status with no due process.
If you are part of the fandom community and you are in America, please contact your reps and ask them to vote NO on HR 9495.
More links to find reps
A dangerous bill that gives broad and easily abused new powers to the executive branch would allow the Secretary of Treasury to strip a U.S.
A 22 yr old in my org got drunk tuesday night and kinda shit on the fact that I'm running a community cleanup for our chapter. Said something along the lines of "i didn't join up to pick trash." Which really bothers me and it took me a while to figure out why. The whole point of the community cleanup is that we're returning to the neighborhoods where we knocked doors for A4 to help clean up their streets and provide material improvement for free in an effort to build inroads with those neighbors.
Like... if your socialism doesn't include picking uo trash, I'm guessing it also doesn't include doing the dishes, babysitting, or anything else that is important but not prestigious. Idk man, fuck off with that shit. You'll pick up trash and you'll like it until you understand why picking up trash isn't anyone's job but your own. I hate that attitude. If helping and doing activism was always fun and visible and impressive, everyone you know would already be doing it.
The first thing the new york chapter of The Young Lords (Puerto Rican American communist civil rights group(Worked alongside the black panthers))did upon forming their group was reach out to their community in east harlem, they asked their community what problems needed to be addressed and consistently the number 1 problem brought up was the trash.
In their chairman Felipe Luciano's words, “So we’re on 110th Street and we actually asked the people, ‘What do you think you need? Is it housing? Is it police brutality?’" Luciano says. "And they said, ‘Muchacho, déjate de todo eso—LA BASURA!” [Listen kid, fuggedaboutit! It’s THE GARBAGE!] And I thought, my God, all this romance, all this ideology, to pick up the garbage?”
And so the young lords responded to their communities needs and they picked up the trash. This was at a time (1969) when there were literal tons of garbage lining the streets, trash collectors would pick up some garbage every now and then but would leave most of it behind, they also refused to sweep the streets, and only allotted 6 big dumpsters in that entire 40 block area. This was due to racist/classist stances held by the almost exclusively italian american trash collector union.
The young lords stepped up in this situation, they go and ask for brooms and bags from the trash collectors union and get refused and insulted. They go back later and steal the brooms and bags, and get started cleaning their neighborhoods. This is a band aid and it doesn't fix things but it does show their community these people care, these people will listen and put in the work, these people are our people, it was the basis of community organizing, building trust and responding to people's actual needs.
While this did help and build trust the problem persisted and so the young lords came up with a program they called the garbage offensive (or maybe the trash offensive i forgot). They started sweeping all of the trash onto the side of the street and waited for the trash collectors to come by, when they refused to pick it up, the young lord would pile that all into trucks and haul it off to 3rd avenue in Manhattan(a much richer whiter area that gets high traffic). They dumped the trash into the middle of the street (not just bags of trash, we are also talking furniture, broken sinks, etc.) and then hauled off and they did this almost daily. They forced people to pay attention. The whole community started to get involved in this, kids, young men and women, and older community members too. They all started to join in on dumping the trash in the richer parts of the city to make people care and pay attention.
These protests got larger and bolder, they would sometimes pile up the trash high and then light it on fire, over turn cars and make a party out of it sometimes too. Police were called and showed up and attacked as they do but the protests persisted.
The Young lords published their demands and sent them out in a press release and their demands were listened too. In that years mayoral race every single candidate had to address the trash problem and promise solutions.
-
This is an important lesson that direct action often pushes reforms, if we want reforms the best way to get them is to act and make the state react to us and catch up with our demands.
-
Their demands included increased sanitation workers, hiring black and puerto rican sanitation workers, increased dumpsters, increase in pay to sanitation workers, end having to pay off your sanitation workers to ensure your trash gets picked up etc. Many of these demands were met and in the coming years the trash does end up getting picked up regularly and the problem does get dealt with.
The Young Lords end up going on to do so much more. They occupy hospitals, steal supplies from the government, and try to build towards a revolution in america. But it starts here, it starts with the trash it starts with all the small menial hardships. We can talk about revolution all we want but if our neighborhoods are unsanitary, our neighbors hungry, our needs uncared for nothing will come of it. The revolution you want to build however radical you are must start rooted in your community, their wants and needs. And part of that is picking up the trash, starting a community run daycare, and all the little unglamorous day to day struggles that weigh people down.
Thank you for this addition! I'm going to read it to the volunteers who come out to trash pick with us today 🤘
This is the sort of thing I failed to try and impart on one of my unions recently: consistency and small gestures - just being around visibly in the community and showing up - goes a longer way than spinning wheels to execute one thing perfectly that feels significant to the organizers but moves the needle and recruits not at all.
https://ift.tt/MQblvtg At least I already did the calculus of who was in and around my life and was fundamentally unsafe to that life years ago. There are people I love and would never want to see harmed on that list, and yet I've known that they could easily rationalize harm to me. Yesterday didn't tell me anything new in that regard. I wish it had. via Helen Doremus https://ift.tt/ftrEoTR November 06, 2024 at 07:44AM
guillermo del toro’s pinocchio is a beautiful film but my god no one has adapted that story like neverafter. you can never look at it the same way again after listening to lou wilson, a black man, explaining that he chose to play as pinocchio because it’s a story about a little boy who isn’t allowed to make mistakes. that in pinocchio's story, he is fundamentally barred from childhood at once upon a time. he must earn something that everyone else is granted from birth. the other boys get to tell lies and play and get into trouble, but when pinocchio does the same thing there are grave and violent consequences. his pinocchio is trying to understand why the world is so unfair, why the rules are so different for him, why everyone else gets to be a real boy.
and I think about it every day.
as an entire queer trans allosexual i think it's weird when other allosexuals don't like the term allosexual for themselves. it just means not asexual. smacks of cis people who scream and howl and pee their pants about being called cis
"it lumps me in with my oppressors I don't like it" cis does that too. lumps your lgbt ass right in with cishet people. so like. why are you ok being called cis but not allo
allosexual isn't a slur it isn't perjorative it's just a word for not asexual. so that ace people don't have to feel othered as hell when talking about people outside their community. what the fuck do you want them to call you? "normal"? your mask is slipping
ok im done with discourse now i prommy. please treat me really niceys
There's a few people in the notes complaining that allo- is a stupid prefix because it means other. They think that the categories should just be "asexual" and "sexual."
But, like, that's what we did. When I was first realizing my sexuality and hanging out on thr AVEN forums a decade ago, that's what the categories were.
And you know what? It didn't work. Virgin and celibate allos didn't appreciate being called a sexual being. Even those who have sex often don't like just being called "sexual."
So we needed an alternative. One of the earliest definitions of asexual is "self-contained sexuality." It's been put aside in favor of the current definition of lacking sexual attraction, but it still resonates with a lot of people. And especially did back when we were trying to figure out a better term for "not asexual."
So allosexual was proposed. It was chosen because allosexual means that you are sexually attracted to other people. To people not yourself.
So yes, the etymology does make sense. You just didn't bother to look into it.
(I hope the people complaining are doing so in good faith, but I'm not willing to test that by replying to anyone directly. Now the information is out there if anyone wants to bother to look.)
