When Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate was first released, I watched it, but I didn't give it the importance it truly deserved. I felt like it wasn't a movie, but rather the beginning of a seriesâand thatâs exactly what it was! I liked it, but back then, I probably wanted to satisfy my own expectations, such as seeing Roxanne and Megamind in a formal relationship, seeing characters from the first film like Bernard or Metro Man again, or seeing Megamind as the great defender of Metro City.
Since those expectations weren't met and I heard such terrible reviews, I was one of the many who let themselves be influenced. I was so busy at the time that I just let it go. However, in 2025, I subscribed to Max and watched the series Megamind Rules!. During the first episode, I told myself, "Oh no, they were right; they're portraying Megamind so poorly." But as the series progressed, I enjoyed it so much that I watched it twice in a row.
Just as I was about to start it for the third time, I thought, "What if I rewatch Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate?" And I did! This time, I understood the writers' intentions. Personally, now that I have the full picture, I believe the story is actually good and has special, beautiful details. While some things could be improved, thatâs not the point; I want to highlight what actually matters.
To start with, the story of The Doom Syndicate was never labeled as "Megamind 2." I think that "2" carried idealistic expectations that prevented many from enjoying this project. Both the movie and the series show us how Megamind learns to be a hero, considering that ever since the original film, he suffered rejection and didn't know how to socialize. He used arrogance, pride, and overconfidence as a shield, besides being more used to doing evil than good. These stories show the process of him learning to trust the citizens, appreciate Ol' Chum (Servil), and work as a team.
I also really liked the development of his romance with Roxanne. Letâs remember she met him when he was a cruel liar, but in this project, they took the time to get to know each other better. Roxanne supported him at all times, and I agree with them calling their relationship "complicated"âafter all, who starts a romance with a former villain overnight? I could see how their friendship grew to strengthen a love that is truly genuine.
On the other hand, the inclusion of new characters was also criticized, but I think they were necessary to bring more life to Metro City. As the series goes on, you grow fond of them; for example, I grew attached to Keiko and Mr. Donutâs family.
Another point is that I didn't see Megamind as "dumb." Although he seemed like it at times, he was more like an inexperienced guy who was still learning. Let's remember that in the first movie he also made mistakesâhis inventions failed, he made bad decisions, etc. These stories show the journey of a reformed Megamind, and I loved that.
In my opinion, people spoke poorly of it because they didn't see the full picture and stuck to their own ideals. They couldn't see the love put into this work, the characters, and the fans. As a fan, Iâm grateful I didn't miss out on what happened after the first movie. I hope those who haven't yet will give themselves the chance to watch the whole story (the movies and the series) and realize that these recent works are a blessing for true fans.
