The Most Tumblr Punchline

I've noted before that my favorite punchline on Tumblr is "hang on, gotta look something up/okay that's funny."

Let me explain why:

It is a way to say "I don't get it" without blaming the joke or the teller.

It is a tacit admission of ignorance without shame or judgement.

It assumes responsibility for acquiring the knowledge the respondent doesn't already have.

It cues other people who Don't Get It to do the look-up themselves, allowing them to get that full impact of Getting It without derailing the post with explanations.

It gives subsequent readers, whether or not THEY got the joke, a little frisson of good feelings when they realize that someone else is now In On The Joke.

It not only makes the original joke funnier, it gets funnier the more often it's used.

is it crazy to say that the only reason people make jokes like "i bet (conservative male politician) has a grindr account 🤣" or other jokes about republicans being closeted homosexuals is that they think being secretly gay or being a hypocrite is more shameful and worthy of mockery than holding homophobic beliefs

the present compulsion to sort basically any woman-directed punk band into riot grrrl strikes me as regressive for the same reasons gender segregation always is. it's pretty clearly being done by people who don't understand how absolutely integral women have always been to punk rock and it's becoming corrupt into a term that means "punk rock for girls"

Riot Grrrl was a scene mostly centered around a few cities in a specific time with a specific sound!

There's nothing wrong with drawing from that sound and those politics, but punk bands with girls in them ≠ riot grrrl and that is ok!

In a similar vein don't like it when people compare my band to GLOSS because like, yeah, we're all transfemme but our songs aren't specifically about trans struggle any more than everything I do in my life is about trans struggle
