Two Women Kissing in Nature (b. 1859)
— by Georges Rochegrosse
Not me getting inspired to write again after SOTR. Not that I have a dystopian, political story that will change lives, but I have two little teenage sapphics going through it AND THEY MATTER.
i’m going to hold your hands when i say this and i am only going to be kind about it once: ai does not belong in fandom spaces, ever. not in writing, not in art, not in video, not at all. it does not matter how bad you want to see your favourite characters kiss, or how much you need a bit of help finishing a chapter, or whatever.
make friends with artists. commission somebody. learn to draw yourself. ask for a beta read. try a writing partnership. fandom spaces are communities, so engage with them! it is about the journey and the fact that we all love something enough to create and build together about that thing.
spending 30 seconds to kill a tree and get an AI to push out some soulless empty piece of “content” is antithetical to the entire point of being engaged with fandom, and if you’ve taken to doing this you should really reconsider if you belong in these spaces with the rest of us.
Maysilee would never have lived longer as a victor. Snow would never allow it.
The fact that Maysilee knew who the real enemy was even before she was reaped. SC said it herself, Maysilee’s driving force is rage. She’s mad at the system because it is unfair that she’s condemned to a life she doesn’t like just because she was born there. That comes across as meanness.
Then she’s chosen for the Games and unleashes the rage. She fights back. But so aware of what is actually going on that all her true rage is only directed toward Capitol people. She’s still mean, yes, but she’s protective of the Newcomers, she creates their symbols. She tells Haymitch not to allow the peacekeepers to get Louella that easily because she knows the Capitol might have their deaths, but they can’t allow them to have their lives either.
Even in the arena, Maysilee does not doubt herself for a second, she’s not corrupted for a single second. She’s face to face with two of her strongest opponents - 2 careers - and she doesn’t hesitate to kill the Capitol’s lackeys, it is automatic, it is obvious, they are the ones to rebel against. - props to Maritte btw, for having the same thought as Maysilee.
The girl died with no begging or tears because she wanted dignity, she wanted her death to have meaning. And not a rebellion necessarily. She wanted it to be a huge “FUCK YOU” to the Capitol.
Now imagine all of that rage into a victor. Someone who’s family and friends being killed would only make for increasing her anger, the rage, the fire, the pettiness.
Snow wouldn’t have taken long to kill her. Because if Maysilee Donner had had a gun, the system would’ve crumbled within seconds of her stepping into the Capitol.
Dude, first of all, posting here after like 14 years is crazy, but Sunrise on The Reaping ended me like THG trilogy ended me 14/15 years ago, so…
And I just can’t get over the feeling that Haymitch’s life post-arena just feels like a fucking waiting room. Like everyone he loves has gone through that fucking door and he’s just sitting there, not knowing where they went and never getting called in.
SUZANNE COLLINS
Maysilee’s final poster wasn’t her death, it was her pin being the face of the rebellion 25 years later.
Thinking about how Wyatt Callow is proof that Dr. Gaul’s and Snow’s assertion that humanity’s essential nature is violent (which is part of their argument for the Capitol’s control being necessary) is false. That “What happened in the arena? That’s humanity undressed… A boy with a club who beats another boy to death. That’s mankind in its natural state.” is false.
I’m sure he had it all calculated. He knew exactly what choices would give him the best odds of survival. He knew that the faster he got out of the initial bloodshed the better his chances would be. He knew that letting other kids die would benefit his odds of survival. He knew exactly what he should’ve done to preserve himself.
And yet, he threw all those statistics and odds, all that reason and logic out the window in the name of protecting Lou Lou, a girl that wasn’t even from his district. He threw it all out the window in the name of helping another human being that was in an unfair situation and had worse odds than him. He knew who the real enemy was; he knew it wasn’t the other kids being taken advantage of by the Capitol just like him.
That is humanity.
Thinking about Maysilee Donner. A girl who refused to let the Capitol dehumanize her. A girl who wanted to die with dignity, without begging for her life, because that mattered to her. Who set up a place setting with napkins and forks in the middle of the arena because she is a human being. Who loved jewelry and fashion and believed that her appearance sends a message about who she is, and who wanted that message to be respectable, dignified, worth something.
Thinking about Maysilee Donner who was unafraid to slap the woman who pulled her name in the reaping and who threw clever insults towards anyone who provoked her, no matter who they were. Maysilee Donner who believed human dignity is inherent but respect is earned and who refused to give respect to those who did not deserve it.
Maysilee Donner whose father threw money at the reaping stage as if that could save her, and the money floated to the ground just like the confetti, meaningless paper that signified nothing when placed against the power of the Capitol. Whose privilege could not save her. Who recognized that reality and faced it with more fortitude than any person should ever have to display. Maysilee Donner.
Suzanne Collins number one Maysilee Donner defender
it costs exactly $0 and zero cents to use “they” instead of “he or she” when talking about a hypothetical person or someone whose pronouns you don’t know
Very cool Merriam-Webster,very cool.
how do you pronounce it?
someone else: *makes a mistake*
