year 12 is so hard
history fucked me up
oxford was built and operational as a college before the rise of the mayans and cleopatra lived in a time nearer to pizza hut’s invention than to the pyramids being built
I need a noncomprehensive history book that covers Known World History in time periods, like “in this century, all this shit was happening concurrently” and not just all spread out so I have to piece it together like some unpaid uneducated scholar
You mean like this?
The Timetables of History by Bernard Grun
I grew up with this book, which is frickin’ enormous, and it was endlessly fascinating to young me to pour over the side by side comparison of events taking place concurrently under different headings and in different parts of the world.
Or if you want something you can put on your wall, there’s this:
World History Timeline
I had this book! My grandpa gave it to me and it was really freakin useful!!
I loved this book! Same for The Timetables of Science: A Chronology of the Most Important People and Events in the History of Science.
Same for The Timetables of Technology: A Chronology of the Most Important People and Events in the History of Technology. Great references!
okay but here’s an even cooler (free!) visualization that goes a step further and tracks ideas, devices, infrastructures, and systems of power
Calculating Empires: A Genealogy of Technology and Power Since 1500
✨️with a special focus on colonialism, militarization, automation, and enclosure✨️
You can spend hours upon hours exploring this
It does sound peak tho
Okay- but like- the Everglades are legitimately beautiful.
Yeah, actually, when you think about it, elves would probably love wetlands. I mean, elves love forests and are also often depicted as great sailors (or at least have a "Sea" variant), and what is a swamp but an extremely wet forest? Tree houses on stilts, graceful walking on raised roots or even on water, add some wind magic and you have a hover boat...
In older Northern/Western European folklore, elves are even associated with bogs and mires, albiet the more gnome-and-pixie-adjacent pre-Tolkien type. You can even get a little creepy with will-o'-the-wisps. And while we don't think of alligators as elf-adjacent, alligators are also ancient, beautiful creatures that eat humans.

im so sick of unnecessary dinner scenes in movies 😡 every fucking movie they just want to titillate you with some food because they think you’re a dumb animal who just wants to see mashed potatoes bouncing. if its an IMPORTANT dinner scene where they explain lore then whatever i understand. but they shove useless meals into every movie these days and its disgusting
really? you don’t say

vampires are so full of shit. "oh the human race is beneath us, you're just livestock to us" I don't think you know what livestock is. do you feed us? care for us? protect us from predators? no. you just slink around dark alleys and ambush people. that's not what a higher being does. that's a bottom feeder. a parasite. karate punches your head off
She Would Say That. She would DO that.
i think we are long overdue for a game that does the reverse of 90s first person shooters and actively makes fun of the player for picking the hard difficulty
heres kinda what i mean
"less is more" is a lie perpetuated by big small to sell more less
Can't stop thinking about how Lhikan, beloved legendary defender of the city of Metru Nui, canonically lived in a studio apartment.
Its rough out here, Metru Nui economy in shambles
Love the differences in the Toa-Matoran relationships between the Toa Mata and the Toa Metru. With the early books about the Toa Mata on Mata Nui, there's a definite sense of them being protective of their Matoran almost instinctively and looking after them carefully. Kopaka protecting Matoro is the first thing he does on the island, Tahu carries injured Matoran on his back, pats Takua on the head, and insists on going after him and Jaller to keep them safe, and Lewa's always calling his Matoran little brothers. In turn, the Matoran can be seen saluting and bowing to their Toa, address them respectfully, and understand that they have positions of authority. Jaller even throws himself at a Bohrok-Kal to help Tahu and Tahu lauds him in front of everyone.
Then we meet the Toa Metru, who are two seconds away from inventing swear words just to describe how badly these little bastards they have to deal with tick them off, and with them are six Matoran at varying degrees of willingness to tell them to fuck right off in return. The way Onewa would punt Ahkmou if he had the chance. The way the Matoran cheer watching them get arrested by a whirlwind and sent to Archives prison. The pure antagonism. Yes they will still protect any of these guys with their lives (probably) but MATA NUI
Looking back at canon, I definitely would have expected Takanuva to be the cure for the shadow leeches. I can get behind the klakk since there are so many weird Rahi and it was a Rahi that caused it, anyway, but I would have loved to see Takanuva in his twilight state realizing that he could restore the light to the Shadow Matoran and save them. and then realizing he could save himself, too. He just had to turn back towards the light. realizing that there wasn't anything the Makuta could take from him that he couldn't take back. Takanuva reaching his hand out towards somebody in a shadow state to break the hold over them and they just crumple like he's shot them through the chest
Oh my god, this.
The Klakk was certainly... A writing choice. But when you had Twilight Takanuva right there, after canonically venturing to other dimensions and meeting a light-aligned Teridax, it just feels so incorrect to do nothing with him.
Great point. Who authorized that thing. I want the name of a Makuta and the name of a Lego employee please
Building off this, what if the cure for the Shadow Leeches wasn't even Takanuva himself, but rather the Mask of Light. The Teridax claimed the Mask of Shadows allowed him to see the hidden darkness in everyone, and it stands to reason the Mask of Light could see the light, the good in everyone along with its ability to spread peace and understanding.
Perhaps the story would go that the Shadow Matoran would claim that they have no more light and goodness left in them. But Takanuva uses the Avohkii in a way he never had before and finds that that's not true that you can't full get rid of a person's light. Or at least, you can't forcefully take away all of someone's light, to get rid of it completely would have to be that person's choice.
In that way, the effects of the Shadow Leech become a metaphor for forced trauma bringing out the darkest parts of people, and the empathy of Takanuva and the power of the Mask of Light being a metaphor for emotional healing. This is even thematically supported in canon, Takanuva, while almost losing himself to rage, claims that he is what they made him.
And perhaps most ironically, the fact that Takanuva is now half-light, half-shadow is what gives him the empathy to see this, but only if he can make peace with himself about his own dark-side that comes out. We could even go the route of having each cure be very personal for each Shadow Matoran, finding their personal light in personal ways.
And maybe this method of curing doesn't happen right away, but rather it begins the process and the full healing happens over time later. But it opens the Shadow Matoran up enough to at least that they'll still leave with the other Av-Matoran before the energy storms hit.
Also on another note, the Klakk (which I personally enjoyed btw, but I understand its not everyone's taste) was made by Mutran in story. Don't know the human that designed it irl tho
I know that making the Vahi (and not making and losing and retrieving it and all this stuff) is pretty central to Vakama's character development, but in general I'm not sure the story ever really impresses on the reader how much of a big deal this is outside of Vakama's character. This Matoran-recently-turned-Toa just created the Mask of Time. The Mask of Time?! That is almost as big of a deal as the Mask of Life - a mask that takes multiple story arcs, multiple enemies and heroes, and multiple sacrifices to get to. And Vakama just forges the Mask of Time???? Just forges it??? Tahu wears it to fight Bohrok?? Mind boggling on a world development scale. The tabs that the Order of Mata Nui must have on Vakama are wild. Even if he never became a Toa, if Vakama was a Matoran who "just" made the Vahi and that was all he ever did, that would still make him one of the most influential beings alive in the whole of the Matoran Universe, and certainly one of the greatest crafters. If he had done that a millenia or two ago, he would have been sent to Artakha just for crafting it. The cosmic scale of the Vahi is unreal and unrealized in canon. maybe that's what Time Trap was trying to accomplish but geez, Vakama
