~ 2nd June, Sunday: Motodo Pizzeria, BKC~
Our dinner date at Motodo did not disappoint. Whetting our appetites with their simple breadbasket, the cool eggplant and tomato dip was mellow and refreshing.
I was craving Aglio Olio, and our server vouched for their angel-hair version. Smooth, thin strands of pasta effortlessly rolled with crumbled focaccia and sweet, plump cherry tomatoes. The garlic was just right and the chili hummed pleasantly in the background.
Their Margherita is as good as any pizza that's made well. The dough was well-risen, the passata nice and clean, and the cheese and basil were snugly settled. Since this pizza isn't one that kicks with flavor, my favorite thing to do is savor bites of it by dipping it in chili oil.
On My Plate:
Potato Bravo! (Spiced Romanesco Sauce | Classic Aioli | Smoked Paprika)
The Tacos Tribe (Loaded with Lettuce, Pico De Galo, Sour Cream)
Notes:
The potato appetizer deserves a standing ovation. It's been nearly 10 months since I ate this, but the dish still brings very happy memories. This was such a unique starter: cubes of beautifully fried spuds, *that* heaty Romanesco, the cooling aioli, and the tangy-sweet paprika sauce, all singing in perfect harmony.
The tacos were really delicious too (one of those few places that know how to make soft tortillas correctly), they had banana fries tucked in as a surprise element.

Truffle Edamame Dumplings 🥟
Shiitake Mushroom Dumplings 🥟
Fried Turnip Cake
Spicy Vegetable Dumplings 🥟
Food Notes:
First things first, I very much love a dedicated dumpling place that's not just affordable but houses a good vegetarian menu. CHA scores extra marks for this on my 'Return Here to Eat Dumplings' list.
Let's get down to the food: As much as I find Truffle and Edamame dumplings overrated, I must admit they are still yum. CHA kept all of the good things intact: creamy edamame mouse, buttery dumpling skin and just the right amount of truffle for my Indian nose.
You don't go wrong with mushrooms (never, no). I loved the crunchy julienned pieces that went really nicely with the earthy yam and lotus root in the Shiitake Mushroom Dumplings.
The Fried Turnip Cake was spot on: piping hot 'daikon'-ish filling, golden-hued fried garlic and red chili flakes along with a dash of green onions. Oh, a word of golden food advice: Never let your turnip cakes go cold. Eat them as soon as they hit the table, even if you scald the roof of your mouth. Totally worth it.
I was amused with the jelly-like boat crown of the Spicy Vegetable Dumplings. Stuffed with Pokchoy, carrots, water chestnut and lotus root, they had infused heat from some red chilli in the filling.
One must never stop being grateful for the humble yet royal 'Chili oil' which is probably the reason why I eat so much of dumplings anyway.

On My Plate:
1. Goat Cheese & Mushrooms Toast 🧀 (Whipped truffle goat cheese topped with parsley mushrooms & microgreens)
2. Butter Croissant 🥐
3. Cappuccino ☕
.
Notes: Crushed so hard on the goat’s cheese and mushrooms toast. It was luscious, smooth, sweet, sprinkled generously with salty capers. The texture of the mushrooms was soft yet chewy, a perfect companion to the crisp toast. I have to say, you’ve got to have friends who introduce you to genius dishes like this (I’ve got mine.)
Croissants got to be flaky, buttery, and make you ‘ooommhh’ which this one did (good job, bread wonder). Coming back for that goat’s cheese though.😉

Notes:
My first outdoor meal of 2023 was at CinCin, an Italian restaurant whose Burrata pizza is to LIVE for (why die if you can eat well, right?)
I am always apprehensive when I hear ‘truffle’, but these potato fries were gorgeous. Plump, juicy, piping hot, the truffle oil was just the right amount. That house dipping sauce was spectacular (all things fiery and fine).
With a beautiful, windy outdoor sitting, accompanied by a hell lot of mosquitoes, the Burrata pizza was as sensational as I first remember eating it.

1. Avocado Toast (Sourdough)🥑
2. Red Hummus, mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, & onion sandwich 🥪
3. Cappuccino ☕
Notes: June and July have been special breakfast months. They will be remembered fondly for we (bff & yours truly) would pick a weekday and bask in each other’s presence over our favorite meal.
Homemade pesto-laden toast with freshly scooped avocado, a sip of hot, bitter cappuccino --- that’s the stuff legends are made of.
We had a very cute twist to our breakfast story--- the server made us a special combination sandwich of red hummus, mushrooms, sundried tomatoes and onions, customized to our preference. They even made a half-&-half affair by spoiling me with mushrooms and leaving them out for my friend since she isn’t a fan.

3. Corn & Waterchestnut Dumpling (the yellow one) 🌽🥟
4. Handrolled Avocado Spring Roll 🥑
5. Vegetables & Chive Dumpling 🥦🥟
6. Tofu & Wild Mushroom Clay Pot, Bok Choy 🍜🍄🥬
7. Vegetable Yang Chow Fried Rice 🍚🌽
Notes:
Zao Cha House had been tucked in my Instagram ‘Saved’ section for a while. We finally decided to grab a meal there. Tucked in an alley, this cute little dumpling restaurant won our hearts with its woody, Zen interiors that remind you a of meditation cave.
With asymmetrical windows panning their walls, they seated us on the first floor. We watched the sunlight play on red, orange and green leaves while sipping on Yum Cha Iced Tea--- a mandarin-based orange cooler which is refreshingly tangy and sweet.
We asked Andrew, our server, in order to recommend vegetarian dimsums. His recommendations turned out to be really tasty. We started with the Corn and Waterchestnut Dumpling. I’ve had this pairing before, but Zao Cha surprised me. They created a harmony out of these two vegetables in a way where the crunchiness of the waterchestnuts almost blended with sweetness of the corn.
I say this to my friend very often, “You know it’s a good dumpling when you can eat it just as it is. No dipping sauce needed.”
I tried a bite of this with their roasted pumpkin sauce and the combo was stellar. Next, we had their Handrolled Avocado Spring Roll. The fried skin was light, flaky and crunchy. Served on a bed of avocado pieces, they sautéed these with salt, pepper and butter. But the standout was dunking the spring roll in that Sriracha Mayo. Damn, that was good. Surprisingly, there was a certain cheesiness to the filling without there being any cheese in it.
Let’s come to the Vegetable and Chives dumpling. This was a bit on the sweeter side. However, I love a slight sweetness in my dimsum fillings. This one went beautifully with both, the chili oil and the roasted pumpkin one.
I am going to take a moment and applaud the Vegetable Yang Fried Rice because it was so well-made. With a stickiness similar to sushi rice, this one was cooked in the wok to perfection, lending it a smoky, light fragrance. I ate a couple of servings of this rice just as is. So good.
Their Tofu & Wild Mushroom Clay Pot, Bok Choy was beautiful. Again, it was a bit sweet versus salty, however, I loved the mild kick of Thai chili and the lovely root-flavor of the mushrooms. The Bok choy was cooked in a way where the crunch of the stem wasn’t lost. So delicious. Lastly, *that* tofu. Oh man, it literally made me sigh out of pleasure. Melting straight away on my tongue it was a delight to eat.
I don’t think I can forget this meal. And I am very grateful for the restaurant and Andrew, our server, who made our lunch such a memorable experience.💕

2. Cappuccino ☕
Notes: What do I like after a hearty Chinese meal? Gooey, warm, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate fudge cake which has a springy, chewy crust. Sigh. And then, I also love a well made cup of Cappuccino to balance out the sweetness.
Coffee & cake--- nothing gets better in life than these two together.

On My Plate:
1. Veg. Gyoza 🥟
2. Aglio Olio Pepperoncino 🍝
3. Indian Treat Pizza 🍕
Notes: We headed to ‘Mitron’ a cafe-bar in Bandra on a Sunday afternoon. Okay, let’s start with the dimsum: water-chestnut celery, lotus root and corn. They did well. The water-chestnut had a nice bite to it and there was a chili kick to the whole affair. Paired with the complimentary green onion oil, it was heaven.
Next, the Aglio Olio Pepperoncino. Al dente is very different from undercooked, let’s get that clear. And our pasta took a lot of ‘ruminating’ + settled like stones in our stomachs. Not fun,
Lastly, the Indian Treat Flatbread Pizza. The menu mentions the following components ‘Makhani sauce, Paneer tikka, onion, coriander, mozzarella. As you can clearly see, 2 of the 5 ingredients were missing--- the onion and the coriander.
These two flavors enhance the Makhani sauce and make it more power packed. Since the servers got us the wrong pizza, when we finally got the right one, it felt like a slob of cheese and a few sorry pieces of paneer were ladled in a ‘sabzi’ sauce.
The service: If you’re charging folks around 2000 bucks for a meal between two people, give them food that justifies the price. I think the restaurant having achieved popularity forgets that it has customers other than their ‘buffet + rich drinking’ crowd. Their servers messed up our orders twice in a row, swiped more than the right bill amount from our cards, and took around 6-8 minutes to even get a hold on.
Sorry for the rant, but this needed an out. Never eating here again.

On My Plate: Fried Vegetable Wantons
Notes: The saving grace of a bad friend-date, Monday blues, and a week that was rather tiring, I thank these fried vegetable wantons from Sahibaan. Piping hot, the skin is crispy, flaky and crunchy enough that the sound of you biting into it brings a smile. Also, that simple filling of sautéed cabbage, carrots, and capsicum in soy sauce is heaven.🥟🥕

On My Plate:
1. Hot Praline 2. Chili Cheese Toast
Notes: This was a ‘work-from-a-cafe’ date that made me realize I need to be holed up either at home or at office to actually get work done, haha. But in other news, we checked out a new Starbucks outlet and got their ‘Praline’ ---why do all their coffees taste the same but have different names? I got the hot version and my friend got the cold one. Mine tasted like their Christmas special ‘Mocha’, and my friend’s tasted like a cousin of the ‘Java Chip Frappuccino’.
The only worth heading to Starbucks for is their Chili Cheese Toast. It’s cheesy, spicy, the bread is soft and moist and the strings of mozzarella don’t make you feel terrible about spending 300 bucks on it. Also, it goes superbly with the chili sauce.

On My Plate: Avocado Toast on Sourdough
Notes: Avocado Toast is a specific mood, and like how pregnant people get food cravings, I get a similar one for this toast from Suzette. Their inhouse pesto is fire. And I absolutely love crunching a little bit of pink salt on the top. The salt amplifies the creaminess of the avocado and the delicious pungency of the sundried tomatoes. 🌿🍅

On My Plate: Channa Pav
Notes: Channa Pav is another street snack that I am dearly fond of. Channa (brown chickpeas) are boiled and sautéed with finely chopped onions, tomato, potato and coriander. There is salt, red chili powder and some fresh green chilies added to the mix. Lastly, once the mixture is cooked and piping hot, it is stuffed inside a pav (Indian bread) and served.
The hot, soft almost-mushed tomatoes work beautifully with the red chili powder and the onions. I love how wholesome it tastes with the bread. I prefer my Channa Pav without potatoes.

On My Plate: Aloo Handi
Notes: This holds a special place in my heart because it is the food of my childhood. Aloo (potato) Handi is a street snack in which boiled potatoes are halved and carved, to make tiny cups. The cups are then filled with sour (imli) chutney, rock salt, pepper and a dash of some secret masala only known to that particular bhaiyaji. It is topped with freshly chopped onions. The scooped-out potato (which resembles a Chinese-style hat) is supposed to be dunked into some dry masala and eaten as a snack-ender.
What you get is a sour-salty kick from the chutney that mellows down gradually because of the sweetness of the onions & the creaminess of the potato.💕

Notes: I love ‘Dope’ coffee. And their ‘Kalledevarapura’ beans make the tightest, most sublime cappuccino. The brew has faint fruity notes and is delicious when paired with milk. My friend decided that it was the perfect time to munch on some potatoes and so there were hashbrowns.

On My Plate:
a. French Fries b. Classic Vegetable Sandwich c. Margarita Pizza
Notes: Let me start of by saying ‘That was one hell of a meal’.
If I could kiss the person who baked that sandwich bread, I would. The fries were how the English do theirs-- chunky, robust, and potato-wholesome. The masala on the top was just a distraction, but yes, I didn’t mind that one bit.
Let’s get to the Classic Vegetable Sandwich because that’s where my heart is. Rightly so. Cheddar, mozzarella, onions, potato, green bell peppers and cabbage came together to create this gorgeous, delicious affair. Honestly, the stringiness of the cheese was so perfect, and *that* homemade bread was so hearty that I ate an extra piece even when my stomach was pleading a big, fat NO. Lastly, the pizza. Very fun, light and gooey-cheesy, just what you’d expect from a classic Margarita.
But *that* view combined with the food? DIVINE.
