Moonlight Re-watch thoughts: Arrested Development

Mick: Are you two-

Beth: Getting married? No

Josh: 🫤😕

Me: Pretty quick with that response there Beth

Lol anyway this episode always made it clear to me that Beth and Mick were going to end up together. Sometimes I feel like Josh was added as an afterthought? If that makes sense to add more drama to Mick/Beth.

The whole episode fate is brought up, several times first by Mick then by Marisa (Beth’s friend). While in the background is Beth’s and Josh’s 1 year anniversary and it’s kind of ruined at every turn each time they run into each other funny enough. Also each time fate is brought up, Mick and Beth run into each other.

Mick talks about fate via a voiceover while at the doctor office then he and Beth run into each other at the lobby and Beth quickly denies marriage possibilities with Josh. Souring Josh’s already bitter feelings about Mick/Beth relationship. Also probably putting a damper on their upcoming party.

Then Marisa brings up fate at their dinner party and Beth almost immediately gets a call to go the morgue. Josh assumes it’s Mick but Beth says it’s not. The two get into an argument and go separate ways. Later we find out Josh burned dinner and things went bad. Obviously the awkwardness after Beth left the dinner is understandable. I was just pointing out how things go bad for Josh/Beth after fates brought up and Mick/Beth met up. Then Beth ends up running into Mick anyway.

Later Marisa brings up fate again and how Beth should answer the call to move in with Josh. Only for her to get a call (from Mick) and Marisa says it’s a sign that she needs to be with Josh. Beth gives a sassy “it’s not Josh” but like it’s still a sign girl lol. Then she and Mick go on with their little rescue mission.

Then episode closes, Mick brings up fate again via voiceover and drops his car keys. Delaying him from leaving Buzz-wire headquarters. Beth catches up with him and the two share their first kiss. And it’s like Josh who??

It’s just interesting that every time fate’s brought up Mick and Beth run into each other. Yeah I know that’s how scripts work but sometimes it just feels like Josh is just there. You know? Like idk sometimes when I re-watch Moonlight, it feels like Josh is just added in haphazardly.

I mean you can replace Josh with a sibling/parent or friend or just have him as like source like with Carl in the police department and a lot of his like like character dynamic stuff (idk what to call it right now sorry) wouldn’t really be changed. Like Josh being gone doesn’t entirely change the story like if Coraline were to be removed. Certain plots would be slightly different but not like vastly different. (In my opinion)

Honestly removing Josh as a boyfriend character would actually improve Beth/Mick’s relationship and improve certain aspects of Beth’s character and development.

I wonder if Gerald (the rouges sire, from episode 3) was actually able to sire before and he just never waited long enough for his creations to turn and he left them. Like he turned them and he like only waited around for five minutes or something.

Also I’m curious about what’s wrong (aside from the obvious leaving his little feral vamp) with him and why other vampires don’t like him. And also why didn’t Pollack recognize Gerald as a vamp but he was able to tell that Mick was one.

Hope everyone had a happy holidays for whatever holiday you celebrate and even if you don’t celebrate anything hope your week was good.

Random Moonlight thought:

I’m curious how the show would have ended up had it remained Twilight like episodes and other things. In the Pilot episode, Josef is set up to be the villain in the shadows, at least that’s what I think was implied by the ending.

At the end of the episode, Mick and Beth are hugging and Coraline is watching on a neighboring building/rooftop. Then Josef comes up and tells Coraline “there will be time enough for all of this”. Kind of implying revenge? I’m assuming because Coraline looks upset and is like staring very intently at the pair.

The interaction makes it seem like they were in cahoots. So I’m curious where they planned to go with all of this, like why was Josef wanting to go after Mick? How would this affect Mick’s already huge distrust in others? Would Mick be forced to kill Josef at some point?

What was Josef’s end goal? Is it just a ploy to trick Coraline? Is he secretly in love with her (he calls her my love and says the reason he keeps living is because of love)? Was Josef ever Mick’s friend (prob not if he was lying to him, right)?

What kind of cases would Mick work on? What kind of stories would Beth cover? How does Mick/Beth play out without Josh in the picture? Would Coraline do that whole Morgan thing (though I suppose it would be a little harder with visible burn scars but she can also use that to her advantage if you think about it)?

Also Beth knows Mick is a vampire from day one, and that he saved her as a child so there’s no tip toeing around that whole situation. So how does that affect for the rest of the story? How does it affect the progression of their relationship?

So many interesting what ifs. The one I’m most curious about is the whole Josef/Coraline team up like what exactly was Josef going after Mick all about? Because I can’t really think of anything that would make sense. Yeah Mick goes after other vampires but they are typically the ones who almost expose vampires to humans, so it’s like they’ll be killed anyway.
