Sometimes it baffles me that a large subsection of the PJO fandom is so rabidly hostile towards any Percy ship that isn’t Percabeth, and then I remember how Richard has tacitly been encouraging this behaviour since TLO. Anyone who has even the slightest potential of being a love interest for Percy has that potential shut down with extreme prejudice:
Rachel is made the Oracle and can never have romantic relationships with anyone. After TLO, the friendship that she and Percy developed over what he thought was his last year alive was thrown out the window.
Calypso is trapped on Ogygia, but Percy ensures her release. Until that’s retconned in HOO, anyway, in a move that makes Percy look like a dick and utterly defangs oaths on the Styx. Not to mention, Calypso “cursing” Annabeth (even though it wasn’t intentional or even conscious), and then being given to Leo to ruin his character arc for good measure.
Reyna isn’t even given a chance; her advances are openly rejected by Percy, which is a rarity, and she’s later made a Hunter for good measure.
Nico, despite the years Percy spent worrying about him, searching for him, and then spending time with him, is now treated like a stranger by Percy, even though TLO left them off as good, even best, friends. To add insult to injury, Nico’s “confession” to Percy is, frankly, insulting and played for laughs, and post-HOO he’s given a new boyfriend he has spoken maybe one sentence to beforehand.
And it’s not even just canon love interests either; anyone who even has the potential of an interesting romance with Percy is pushed aside:
Thalia? She’s a hunter now.
Bianca? Hunter; also she’s killed off the chapter after she and Percy form a solid bond.
Any of the Seven post-SON? Percy only has eyes for Annabeth.
Clarisse? Random new boyfriend.
Grover? Random new girlfriend.
So yeah, it makes total sense that Percabeth stans get so toxic about shipping when Richard insists on isolating Percy like an abusive husband.

If you see this post you’re legally required to tell me at least one nonbinary headcanon you have for a canonically cis character, because I’ve seen the trans woman and trans man version of this (excellent) and think we could use some enby love also. I’ll go first: Ace McShane wouldn’t have been saved by transition but it might have helped. Also I’m not convinced Kirito is as much of a boy as he thinks he is
Luz Noceda from The Owl House, Sebastian from Stardew Valley, and Jonathan Sims from The Magnus Archives! :3
i've been thinking about something i've been seeing online that feels strange to me, and i wanna talk about it.
when somebody headcanons a character that is presented as male in canon as transmasc, nobody questions their reasoning or even asks about it out of genuine curiosity. but if somebody headcanons that same character as transfem, there's a lot more resistance, interrogation, and assumptions. the main examples of this that i am aware of are jax from the amazing digital circus and ralsei from deltarune, but there are likely more, and maybe some instances with canon female characters.
a lot of the time, when i see characters being headcanoned as trans in the direction of their canon gender, the individuals with these headcanons don't really do anything with it. they don't analyze or examine how being trans affects the character, and they don't explore the character's journey of self acceptance or their transition, since, well, according to their headcanon, they already went through all that stuff and now they're perfectly happy. more often than not, it's just drawings of the characters with "trans traits" like having top surgery scars or wearing a binder, and a missed opportunity to think about the effect that being trans would've had on the character in their life. i'm not saying everyone with those headcanons does this, but from what i've seen it's fairly common.
now, on the other end, individuals who follow headcanons or theories that a canon male character is transfem or a canon female character is transmasc are put under more scrutiny. many people are very blatantly being ignorant towards the reasons for these theories, not listening to actual explanations of others' reasoning in favor of calling the headcanons/theories transphobic. my experience with this is seen in transfem jax theory and transfem ralsei theory. i've seen many a post in which someone is making claims such as "you only think this character is transfem because they're feminine". but if you're in the spaces that discuss these theories and headcanons, you know that the femininity of a male character is not being cited as primary evidence for their possible transfemininity. at least in the examples i'm talking about here, the people who believe this are basing it off of the relationship these characters have with their identity, self worth, and desires, noticing the aspects they have in common with the actual feelings and experiences had by trans people who hadn't realized themselves yet. but so many people refuse to actually listen to these explanations, or just dismiss them as not making sense.
are you picking up what i'm putting down?
Okay, real talk now. People love to tag male characters in posts about women, but this post is gonna take this seriously. Is there actually a canonically male character you believe is a trans woman? Or at least has made into a trans woman for a fanart or a fanfic? Excluding the ones canonically implied.
Sound off in the tags! Link to the fanart or fic if available. Do it. Give me the girls. Make more women.
Edit: here's mine!

i have a very organized Pinterest board of my ships (two actually, one for non-darkships and one for darkships) and i love it so much. everything is sectioned, it’s sorted by fandom, and is separated by dividers. every ship section has exactly 12 pins in it and while most of the time its 6 canon 6 fanart (in a pattern of canon, fanart, canon, fanart, etc., always starting with canon and ending in fanart), some of them have only individual images, only fanart, or both, which means their section name ends in [ALL FANART]/[ALL INDIVIDUAL]/[ALL FANART + ALL INDIVIDUAL]. and to keep it nice and in-sectioned when i save pins to it, i have all the dividers and section names numbered. so the board, in the end, is like this:
21-21. DIVIDER 𐙚 Gravity Falls (one section, has the gravity falls logo), | 21. Dipcifica 𐙚 Dipper P. x Pacifica N. (another section) | 21. Mabifica 𐙚 Mabel P. x Pacifica N. [ALL FANART] | 22-22. DIVIDER 𐙚 Puella Magi Madoka Magica | 22. MadoHomu 𐙚 Madoka K. x Homura A. | 22. MadoSaya 𐙚 Madoka K. x Sayaka M. | 22. KyoSaya 𐙚 Kyoka S. x Sayaka M.
anyways my “non-darkships” one has 34 different dividers (the last two being “misc. fandoms”, meaning every ship in it is the only one i have for that fandom (ex: my only adventure time ship is bubbleline, so that goes there, rather than making a whole new adventure time divider for it) and then “crossovers”, which is just as it sounds) and my darkships one has 14 dividers, again with the last two being misc. fandoms and crossovers. I love my organization so much you all have no idea
!!!
this was me hi guys i love my organization <3 i <3 organizing and sorting
TADC Final spoilers below cut
people are going to see the scene with Jax putting on the bow and somehow twist it around to be “Actually she was coming out as a fem presenting trans masc person and she’s totally not trans fem what are you talking about!!!!! That headcanon makes no sense trans masc makes so much more sense :/“
[spoilers again] yeah seems about right

I still really don't understand the degree of hatred refrainbow and the Boyfriends webcomic received. I never read the comic myself just because I've never personally liked the webtoons app (just inundated with ads IIRC) but it seems like the "controversy," at best, was that the polyamory in the comic was poorly written/would have been unhealthy IRL. But that was enough for people to get as hateful as they did?
Because I purposely kept myself out of the loop as the shit was actively hitting the fan, all I can say for certain is that the advertising for the comic on YouTube was inescapable, and that definitely annoyed me sometimes, but that was never refrainbow's fault? But I saw glimpses of what people were saying, and to this day it just feels like such an obvious transphobic smear campaign, especially because the first result that comes up when you Google "refrainbow controversy" is a transphobic subreddit.
It just hurts to see that trans mascs are so unwelcome, and have been for so long, that something as innocuous and trivial as clumsily handling some representation in your webcomic is enough of a transgression that people will gleefully jump at the opportunity to imagine or make art depicting your characters being subject to violence. Which in itself isn't a problem, but the obvious insinuation here is that your characters are a stand-in for you.
And obviously it would have been great if the polyamory had been better written, but it was clearly never really about that for the people who went on to be so hateful over it. I'm also seeing people say it was because the comic "fetishized the queer community," or just because they found it boring. So, as far as I can tell, whatever reason it is that people became so venomous, it was never a good reason. If it was something to do with the comic not being PC enough (which is a valid criticism, don't get me wrong), there are ways of giving constructive criticism that don't involve being a massive dickhead cyberbully. If it's just a matter of not liking the fucking comic, then just move on and find something else to read? But no, there was an opportunity to attack a trans masc artist, and reasons were invented to justify hating and harming him. And now I get to scroll upon Pinterest posts where folks are laughing and reminiscing about how much they used to hate this comic and the artist, to the point that they'd work themselves up into a frenzy making artwork of the characters being brutalized.

you’ll read a caption of a cute edit that says “obviously not a ship edit,” that insinuates, “what makes you think i would edit them in that manner? you’re the only one who’s thinking like that! if you even thought for a second that it’s a ship then it’s not my fault but yours, because i clearly stated that it’s not.”
and the song used in the edit is one of the most iconic, memorable love songs entitled, “wonderful tonight” by eric clapton.
