Hi! I’m really sick of whitewashing and the various excuses that artists come up with, so I wrote a guide! How To Not Whitewash, at least with regards to skin tone. PLEEEEASE take the opportunity to learn things in high school! For most people, this will be the last opportunity they have to attend school for free.
Everyone needs to gain a better understanding of the world around them in order to grow as a person and function in society. You can certainly learn things independently, but school can provide a very useful buffer against internalizing things that aren’t true (generally, it’s not a perfect system).
The things you think you’re learning in high school aren’t even the things you’re learning! For example, on a test I might ask you who fought in the War of 1812. You’re right that you’ll never need to know that as an adult and if you do you can look it up. BUT! I’m not asking you to make you learn that fact, I’m asking so I have evidence that you’re actually doing the assignments and following the material. The test isn’t there to teach you, the test is there so that I can assess your understanding and participation.
This is why it’s so so so important that you actually do the reading and the assignments and the class discussions! Those are the parts that are actually there to teach you things that you can apply later in life.
Being able to stick with a boring text so that you can gain greater knowledge of a complicated subject IS A SKILL.
Being able to articulate your thoughts, and then put them down in writing in a way that clearly explains them to others IS A SKILL.
Being able to have a respectful discussion with others on a complex or sensitive topic without it becoming an argument IS A SKILL.
Please practice these skills in high school, where the stakes are low. If you don’t have them as an adult, it will be so much harder to get or keep a job. And, as OP noted, you’ll end up being the coworker everyone talks about.

There are only around 1,500 native Cherokee speakers left, and most of them are elders
Little Cherokee Seeds is a program where mothers and babies spend all day with first language Cherokee speakers, speaking nothing but Cherokee, so that the babies become a new generation of native speakers. They're also teaching traditional skills and mothering practices to the mothers to pass on.
This is so so important for the survival of the language. These babies are on track to being fluent first language speakers, and they will be able to keep the language going for another lifetime.
