Happy day whatever of TdF!

Spain won FIFA and I finished all I wanted to do for now of this brown wool. I'm happy to move onto the light and fluffy contrast ply. For scale is a mushroom family I made on commission and sending off tomorrow 🍄 I'll put the rest of the spots as soon as I post this.

I forgot I still had some painted braid left on my toilet paper roll bobbins. The one on the right I want to keep as a single since I really like how the colors go. The other I'll practice chain plying with.

Maybe I'll do that tomorrow since it's so late now and I don't want to rush prepping the color mix fiber. I'll show that off later. I'm already looking forward to 2027 tour de fleece when I feel embarrassed about what I posted in 2026. For now, I'm in the skill valley where everything looks fantastic and I plan on enjoying it 😎 happy spinning everypony

Wally Dion, born 1976, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Fabric Star Quilts.

Wally (Walter) Dion is a Canadian artist of Saulteaux ancestry living and working in Upstate New York. Working in a number of media including painting, drawing and sculpture.

Wally explains:

"The first fabric star quilt was made as part of a 2022 residency at Wanuskewin Park. It was my way of reflecting upon prairie tall grass and the reintroduction of bison into the Great Plaines. I wanted to make several transparent quilts and superimpose them; one in front another... a quilt for the microbiome, another for the bison, their manure & hooves, another for the summer fires that scorch the ground and a final quilt for the sweetgrass braid.

I was considering how all of these things worked together for thousands of years to create what is known as the 'prairie tall grass ecosystem'. A vast and fertile expanse of land stretching from the foothills of Alberta to the banks of the Mississippi. I wanted to highlight the invisibility of systems when everything is working well, as it should be.

I started with the green quilt because it is the colour of the sweet grass braid that is exchanged in ceremony and relationship building. I considered the nature and tradition of quilting; impoverished craftspeople using tiny scraps of fabric. I considered the act of offering fabric and adherence to tradition. I thought of a thousand tiny prayers and how that might look; invisible acts of respect and adherence to protocols spanning decades. My thoughts travelled across the land, imagining the trees and rocks collecting these prayers like a bush of cloth, or an etched boulders."

Another update to this project! In the last update I said I would transition the red pattern into orange towards the top, so here are the pics!

I decided on a slightly gradual transition by adding some more red horizontal lines before switching to orange entirely.

Next step is going to be finishing the grid lines on the other leg, and then covering it with green and (orange, yellow or red?) rice stitch.

SIX, that's right, SIX small quilts i made in May this year. they're varying sizes, but all around 10" across (except the last one, the granny square; that's about 14"). these are all made using fabric i naturally dyed in my kitchen using things like osage, madder, cutch, wattle, black walnut, knotweed, goldenrod... some modified with iron or soda ash. playing with color and making sure scraps don't go to waste!

I won't shut up about spinning because it's so fun, but ppl ask what's fun about it and I say - before I can stop myself - that it's like plucking a dog's shedding undercoat for hours 🤤

People aren't as crazy about that as I thought

I don't want to buy mass-produced garbage from a big box store so I go to etsy but half of etsy is now dropshipped mass-produced garbage or AI slop so I go to the local arts and crafts street market but a ton of those booths are also selling the same generic plastic objects or identical stickers or 3D printed dragons so WHERE do I buy real trinkets and art from sincere freaks

Well, my skeins are slowly getting neater and less full of squiggles. One more hank of lovely bfl to spin up; I think I’ll have a go at chain plying this lot when it’s all done

I have this fantasy where I'm a fiber arts professor at a college and in my mind I write up a syllabus with assignments. and I've just decided that a top whorl spindle is a required supply. Everyone's gonna learn to spin and then we knit. By the end of the semester everyone has matching hats and mittens
