"we detected a mature post" yeah I'm in my 30s
my best tip for anyone trying to get back into reading is to remember that you can read books to avoid other responsibilities in ur life and it can become a vice if you play your cards right
My therapist always says “reading is a healthy hobby” and every time I’m like “girl not how I do it.”
Rocky and Grace are yelling at each other. Rocky stops mid argument to demand that Grace put on his angry eyebrows. Grace immediately stomps to the whiteboard, stomps back over with the dry erase marker, draws angry eyebrows on the xenonite ball. the argument continues
How it feels when someone prevs you
accidentally stayed up until 2. they got so tired waiting for me to go to sleep
I love youtube off-grid/homesteading videos because they're always like "living the simple life" and then depict a life ten times more complicated than mine
Like I'm sure it's way more rewarding to grow and can your own tomatoes and they're probably healthier or whatever but is it simpler than me giving Coles one dollar to bring a much more safely canned can of tomatoes to my house? No. No it is not.
growing your own tomatoes is a fuck load more simple than having a job and keeping a job plus paying all the fees of living in society.
Most homesteaders still need to have a job and keep a job and pay all the fees of living in a society. There seem to be a lucky handful who have reduced their costs by homesteading (usually due to the free labour of friends and family) but there were easier ways to reduce those cost. In the vast majority of cases, homesteading is a lot more expensive than not homesteading. And where people are saving money, the amount of labour per dollar works out to well below minimum wage in savings.
From what I've seen, successful homesteaders do it because they find it rewarding. Rewarding does NOT mean simple.
I can't speak to Australia, but at least in the US there is another group of homesteaders who are trying to live self-sufficiently off-grid because they expect the imminent total collapse of civilization, and they have fantasies of themselves living happily on home-grown produce while everyone else is killing each other for the last can of tomatoes at the store.
Another thing about this subset of homesteaders* is that they are insistent--proud, even!--of doing things that are unsafe, and encouraging others to also do those things.
One example is canning dairy products (milk, butter, cheese). They'll show up in a canning group and say something like, "Look how I canned all this milk that the store was getting rid of this milk for 50 cents a gallon because it's the last day!"
Sane and responsible members of the group will say things like, "Dairy isn't safe for home canning; if you have fresh milk that you need to save for later, you can freeze it or make cheese!" And, "If you need shelf-stable milk you can buy powdered milk," or "You can dehydrate it at home, but you need a really good dehydrator, plenty of trays, and it takes forever; you're usually better off just buying it."
And then the person who just canned 20 quarts of botulism will start frothing at the mouth about how when the shit hits the fan--
And yeah, I'll grant that if grocery stores cease to exist, and you are entirely reliant for your winter survival on what you can put up during times of plenty, the risk-benefit analysis would be different. But in the actual world that we currently live in, it's false economy at best, and at worst a stupid flex that could end up killing somebody.
Anyway, TL;DR, "simple" often refers to an imagined past when the problems of modernity did not exist--yet somehow, the problems of that era have been left behind--which in turn is often a racist dogwhistle.
(*Besides their substantial overlap with weapons stockpilers/"militia" types.)
The Can/Dehydrate Absolutely Everything people baffle me. Most homesteaders (sensibly) have personal solar panels, because they want to live off-grid and still have electricity. When Shit Hits The Fan, their solar panels will not stop working. Their freezers would work fine. Canning or dehydrating or salting is great for certain foods (especially if you want to ferment, pickle or flavour something) but for so much stuff the best thing you can do to preserve nutrients and preserve it safely is chuck it in the freezer.
Freezers just aren't homesteady enough I guess.
The simplest, but also the most immature, answer is that solar panels are 'cheating.' These people base their doomsday images on Fallout and zombie apocalypse movies. But not even on them but this lone wolf stereotype of a stereotype. If you can just create electricity from the sun, then it means you can bypass the gritty survival of eating canned goods and just live like you used to. And that kills the fantasy.
I haven't seen that kind, all the ones I've seen get solar panels as soon as they can afford them because living off generator power is expensive and sucks (and, unlike solar panels, would not serve you well in an apocalypse because you need to keep buying petrol for them). I don't think I've ever seen these anti-solar-panel homesteaders that you deal with. Variety in every community I suppose.
Whenever I hear homesteaders and trad wife people talk about how much better it is to do your own canning I remember my grandmother telling me about the canning days from her childhood and how she would help her grandmother can fresh fruit (we lived in orchard country) in a hot canning shed built for that purpose for days at a time in the middle of summer
Specifically about how it was hell on fucking earth and how her grandmother fucking hated every single second of it
The moment her grandmother could buy canned fruit easily in the supermarket? Never fucking canned a thing herself again and was so relieved and grateful that she would never have to again
Canning as a hobby in your kitchen? I can see that being fun
Canning because you have a fuck ton of fresh fruit coming off of your trees and if you don't can it all NOW you won't have any fruit for winter and it's all you do from sun up to sun down in the middle of summer?
That isn't a cute fun rewarding time. It's hard fucking labour
I hate that certain types of reality tv are entertaining to me. Turns out I'm a human who finds the same kind of bullshit compelling as other humans. I'll be ike "ha, I would never watch The Bachelor or Love At First Sight, they hold no interest to me" but that's just because I don't care about romantic relationships. Give me a show about revamping failing restaurants and I'm hooked. I've spent the last 3 days watching a guy help people in debt budget and learned nothing because the show is not about accounting, it's about a fed up man swearing at people for booking too many Disney trips. This is trash and I'm watching hours of it. I Am Not Immune.
Me: I should enjoy something with depth
Media: We put some petty drama in front of a camera and exaggerated the mistakes of strangers so you can be amazed at their behaviour
Me: Fuck it I'm in
Me: the wedding ceremony is only the start of a marriage. Yes, it's important but not worth all that ::waves hand at the wedding industry::
Media: here's a video of a woman whose mother was just diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Watch them dress shop, even though there's no partner, just so they can have that memory.
Me: her mom thinks she's so beautiful in that dress 😭😭😭
Me, eating box soup and looking at commercials for Love Island: this is so stupid
Me, same soup, watching Chopped: every single one of you dumbasses thinks the only use for cornmeal is polenta?! IF I WAS THERE--
Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.
OH HEY, THATS TOMORROW
I think I just accidentally became someone's loan shark??
Okay it sounds bad but bear with me:
Someone owes me a significant amount of money, and has made it clear that they do not intend to pay me back.
I sent them one text to follow up about it around two months ago, letting them know that I wasn't stressed about it and I could wait or do installments if they needed time or things were rough, and they promptly blocked my number and deleted me on social media.
I was kinda bummed, but then, you know. I figured, it's a lot of money, but at least they've removed themselves from my life, right? If I were to choose between thinking someone like that was a reliable friend or paying a lump sum for the trash to take itself out, I could make peace with it. Whatever. Live and learn.
So, I haven't seen them in a few months. Cool. But then I was walking downtown and I see someone out of the corner of my eye just sitting around, having a drink. Don't know who, don't know what. Not paying attention, yeah? I'm living my life.
But as I get closer to walk past them, I see them get up and start booking it. And as I turn to figure out what's up, why is someone running, I recognize the back of their head, and as they look over their shoulder, we make eye contact, and then they're gone.
And I realize
I just got off work. I'm power-walking in what could ostensibly be interpreted as their direction. They look up and see someone they ghosted, who they have screwed monumentally, coming at them with a hundred-yard-stare and what they may not know is a regular resting bitch face. I don't even care about the money anymore, I've accepted it as a loss, but they blocked me on everything so they don't know that. And they went, "fuck this shit, not today" and dipped.
And that would be funny on it's own, but we do not live in a large, heavily-populated area. It's definitely going to happen again. So my question is this:
How long are they going to let themselves live in fear of my stumpy 5'3" ass hunting them down like John Wick or the devil himself before they snap
And how good is this gonna get while I let them
I need to be clear that I look like this
Tonight on My Husband Doesn’t Know How to Baby Talk
“Ma’am, are you aware that these, right here are your hands? They belong to you. And you get to decide what happens with them. So when you use these hands to pull your binky out of your mouth that is not necessarily a dad problem. I’ll fix it obviously i just want you to acknowledge it’s not my fault”
Husband: ma’am it has been reported lately that you do in fact have tiny little toes and a little button nose, do you care to comment?
Penny Rose: Babbles in Baby
Husband: RIVETING!
Penny Rose: Does that High Pitched Baby Yell ™️
Husband: Let it out friend! Feel your feelings!
Me: Hehehe silly husband doesn’t know how to do baby talk
All of tumblr collectively at my husband:
Penny Rose: does a sad baby scream
Husband: you don’t even have to understand taxes yet! I can explain them but you’ve got several years before that’s relevant!
Penny Rose: wide eyes, staring at her father, almost intrigued
Husband: I lied to you Penny your mother does our taxes. Do you want to know about arbitration? I know all about arbitration.
THE MAN THE MYTH THE LEGEND
yes he just walks around the house and talks to her like this
Penny Rose: Cooing as twinkle twinkle little star plays
Husband: Now Penny there is a lot of misinformation out there in the world and I hate to tell you this but the moon is in fact not made of cheese. That is a conspiracy theory pushed by Big Dairy.
????
Husband: Holds Penny Rose up to her reflection in the microwave
Husband: you see Penny Rose! This was the M. Night Shyamalan twist! You were mirror baby all along!
FYI this is how you get a Deals Warlock if you were wondering
I have follow up questions:
1) Did you participate in baby talk to make up for your husband's deficit, or did you also opt to speak to the Deals Warlock like a very tiny adult from babyhood?
1a) If you participated in baby talk with Penny, did she ever do any code switching with you while she was learning to talk (I mean, babyish talk back to you but fully formed adult like you share with us to Lawyer Dad)?
I didn't baby talk with her very much either! I think I squealed at her more than my husband did.
Something funny that has happened is that while she formally calls me Mama when she's answering me in passing she does call me "My Darling Love" and I don't know for sure but I think it's because I call her and her father "my loves" and her father calls me and her "darlings" and she's created a mash up 😂
So I'll say "okay penny it's time for bed" and I'll just hear "okay my darling love!" 😂
Everyone is always so so kind on this post but I do want to warn you all that this did in fact lead to an insanely verbal child, and if you choose that life you have to commit to that life.
Penny Rose is now 5 years old and she
1. Starts talking the moment she opens her eyes to the moment she passes out at night
2. Asks, and I am not exaggerating I counted, an average of 892 questions a day
3. Does not accept "I don't know" as an answer to said questions, will usually have a follow up question as to why you don't know OR a suggestion on how we can find out together

Let's not beat around the bush: Children's author JK Rowling sexually harassed someone. In some jurisdictions, this would count as sexual abuse. JK Rowling has committed a sex crime against a woman and fell back on the old rape apologist standby of "she was asking for it".

Not a post i thought I'd be making, but as so many are also so taken with him, I'll spread the lore from our perspective: Seattle's newest celebrity was born in our neighbor's cedars to a racoon family that had lived there for years. We saw Jimothy (way better than moniker than what we came up with) almost daily for months. The family used our backyard as a protected on/off ramp for their nightly outings. He was so small and clumsy but his mother and siblings were always so patient and caring, keeping him from falling and sometimes just carrying him. I eventually widened out the rat holes (Seattle thing) under the fence so he wouldn't have to walk the parapet every night. I honestly never had high hopes for his longevity but every time we saw him it brought so much joy and a fair amount of amusement. Then when the tenants in that house moved out, the landlord took out the lion's share of those cedars they called home. I heard the saws then immediately saw the whole family scrambling in the daylight. Sadly worried that would be the last we saw of him until this spring when he scared the hell out of my Uber driver just a few blocks south of the house. The neighborhood group chat (me and the retirees) was immensely relieved to know he was alive and kicking so close by. With all the pain in our timelines rn, I'm really loving how connected so many people feel this funny little creature. Found a few vids of the day we first saw him.

wait wait okay I have discovered people visiting the US for the first time and treating Yellow School Bus like a celebrity sighting and this is so pure and great. Yellow School Bus like in the movies is real.
Love this for them
This just made me remember I am personally such a huge fan of big yellow school bus that I wore a school bus tote bag I used as a backpack in jr high/high school.
I found photos of the same bag as the one I had:
we should start making a ton of yellow schoolbus merch like how if you go to England half the tourist souvenirs are a double decker red bus or a red phone booth.
A friend of mine who was studying abroad in London had people ask her "do Americans really drink out of those red plastic cups, like in the movies?" "...you mean solo cups?" "Oh my god they're real!!!"
I'm glad yellow school bus is getting respect on her name
yessss
Also!!! dead serious: red solo cups are an iconic design
Top iconic American cup designs imo:
1. NYC coffee cup "the anthora" designed by Czech Holocaust survivor Leslie Buck:
2. 90's paper Jazz cup (designed by Gina Ekiss) [side note: I incorrectly sometimes call these Dixie cups, but Dixie is a different brand, lol. There are lots of memorable Dixie cup designs, but none as enduring of visually memorable as the 90's Jazz.)
3. Red Solo Cup designed by Robert Leo Hulseman
I think runners up would be a coke cup (the red & white logo paper cup aka a "movie theater cup"), the red clear plastic cup, or the bottle green coke fountain glass) or perhaps a Starbucks or Dunkin design.
However, I would say they're runners up because:
A) they're drink brand specific
and b) the issue with the Starbucks cup is that it has had a lot of small redesigns, and it's almost more iconic as a generic green & white circle to avoid copyright as opposed to the actual cup itself.
Like yes, there are design variants/copies of the genuine anthora cup, and the red solo cup has had some shape updates, but the designs themselves have been very stable and are more iconic as a result.
Also c) none of those other designs are so famous that they have their own Wikipedia pages. Technically the red solo cup design doesn't have its own wiki page, but it's obviously the feature of the solo cup company wiki page, and of the Red Solo Cup song page. The Jazz design and the Anthora design have their own dedicated entries.
