“No sorry’s needed, but they appreciated.” The older nods in turn, watching everything before him for a moment longer before he turns his attention away. He can’t bare to watch any more of this. It almost felt pathetic to him, to have gotten caught in a situation like this so long ago. But the past was the past. He can’t change anything. It was… An experience for someone else to view it, though. Such a vivid memory, outside looking in like this. Someone who didn’t know anything of it.
Remy takes a moment, opening his mouth to respond only to pause and draw back for a moment. Ah. Well. She did die. Was she trying to make a joke? It was almost reminiscent of Laura making her jokes on those rare occasions– he can’t help but feel his mouth quirk up slightly at that, “Well, y’know. Think the X Men die ‘bout every other day, so. You jus’ fit in there fine then.” Maybe it wasn’t the best time for humor, but Remy didn’t like keeping serious if he could help it.
“We live a life of fightin’ for survival.” His tone switches, of course finding it was necessary with what she was saying, “You gotta do what you gotta do. A soul’s pretty important after all.” And a pause, he gives her a better smile this time, “Appreciate that, though.” It was nice to know someone from back home, who didn’t know him as well as others, didn’t doubt him. It was understandable why they did if they did, but… It was nice that he didn’t seem as terrible to everyone as he thought.
The shift in the scene was a surprise to him, though it was appreciated for a moment to take a turn from a scene so familiar to him, but the change did spark some curiosity with him. He hadn’t been expecting that, especially to go to such a different place, a place he didn’t know. This place certainly could do a thing or two to the mind.
He stares at what’s in front of him, taking it all in, the girl, a younger girl than his current companion— it was like just moments ago in his own memories, he was certain. “Limbo, huh?” The older shares a curious glance to Illyana, “Never thought it’d look quite like this.” So… Empty.
“you would think we wouldn’t even worry about death anymore. die, get resurrected somehow, repeat,” illyana joked, looking at gambit with one corner of her mouth quirked in a smile. she’d long since lost count of just how many x-men had died only to come back in one way or another. apparently piotr had died and got resurrected between her own death and resurrection, which just emphasized that no one ever stayed dead among the x-men.
“i did not expect you to be the x-man who understands that. most x-men seem to still have a purely good and evil view on things and you always seem... overly enthusiastic.” she turned so she was facing gambit more, giving a small shrug. “i must admit. it makes me like you more.”
she hadn’t been prepared for the shift of memories. despite having seen many of her own already, she hadn’t been expecting gambit’s memory to be replaced by this. illyana felt as frozen as the landscape, barely able to breath as she looked at the snow-white environment. she didn’t normally discuss her past, but it has spread out for all of them to see and gambit did just open up to her. strange had said before that it’s good to talk and the words seemed to spill over her lips, rushing to get out even though her tone is nearly flat. “belasco could control how limbo looks. he made it look like this. but every area looked different.”
“this - there” a deep breath. when she’d tried explaining parts of limbo to the new mutants, they’d been left confused. she needed to explain it better this time. “there were alternate x-men in limbo. they had been trapped here. this... this was ororo’s garden. she made the tree. when she died, he made it like this.”
except belasco wasn’t the only one to destroy ororo’s garden, because even as magik spoke her younger self was sitting at the base of the tree, a silver pentagram burning to life below her. the magic had been taken from the tree, her younger self too weak to generate that energy on her own. an acorn was slowly forming out of a black blob, hovering opposite her younger self.
“it was probably part of his punishment. force me to watch as he ruined it.” she clenched her jaw, looking down at her hands. “...i killed her. belasco was going to take her soul. i-i had to.” there’s a bit of a plea in her voice, begging him to agree, to say she hadn’t killed one of the only people to care about her out of some subconscious desire to destroy.
