It's cliche to say Windows, but I was there from the beginning. My Tandy ran PC-DOS and I used 3.1 - 10 (skipping Me for 2000). Then 8 came along and eventually they put ads in Minesweeper and a spash screen on the calculator. Luckily, a lot of the internals I learned are just OS concepts and with a little rework still apply to most OSes.
Nix is like a character customizer for yaks. But eventually you still need to get in there with some clippers and a straight razor.
