I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things
my coworker announces that he's off to the dentist. someone reacts with a tooth emoji. is this a statement of dentist solidarity? a wish for my coworker to return with more (or fewer?) teeth than he set out with? simple word association? who can say
If there's one thing I hate more than people who think they're better than everyone else, it's people who are worse than me

Heat could push the index past 100° in some host cities. FIFA says the ban is about safety.
Players at this summer's World Cup will get three-minute cooling breaks and chilled benches to survive the heat. Fans? They've just been told they can't bring their own water bottles.
In a last-minute reversal now drawing backlash from fan groups, FIFA announced that spectators will no longer be allowed to carry empty, reusable, transparent bottles into stadiums â overturning an earlier decision that had cleared them across all 16 host cities in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.Â
The timing is striking: This is a tournament where the heat is dangerous enough that organizers built a special heat policy around it.
And the numbers back that up. Weather.com senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman did a deep dive on the temperatures players and fans could face, noting that stadiums in Miami and Monterrey, Mexico, face the most potential for extreme heat and humidity.
Miamiâs average highs are around 90 degrees, but from mid-June through mid-July the average heat index is about 102 degrees.
Monterrey, Mexico, has seen mid-summer highs in the 110s.
NJ Transit and the NYNJ Host Committee announced their plan for transportation and parking ahead of the FIFA World Cup games at MetLife Stad
I admire Governor Sherrill for her measured restraint in only charging $150 for special reserved train tickets to the world cup (the price for regular commuters is $12). People are already paying like a thousand dollars for game tickets, personally I would have started at 500 bucks for the train and added another 100 every time FIFA had the audacity to complain.

People die on the job every summer. Remember that water and shade breaks are crucial when working in the heat, and calling emergency services for signs of serious heat illness (fatigue, nausea/vomiting, headaches, dizziness, clammy skin, confusion, agitation, slurred speech, high body temperature, rapid heart rate, etc.) is entirely appropriate. If youâre afraid to call 911 for reasons such as being undocumented, youâll need to get very familiar with how to prevent, recognize, and treat heat illness. If you are symptomatic and not allowed a break, water, or medical treatment, walk out. No matter how broke you are, your job is not worth your life.

For no reason at all I would like to take this opportunity to call out FIFA
otherwise interesting post ruined by the bold insistence that you can never accidentally abuse someone & that all abusive people are self-aware evil masterminds
I don't think my parents are aware that what they did was abuse. in fact I think one of the reasons they abused me was because they lacked the self-awareness, introspection, and education needed to realize what they were doing counted as abuse. if they did have more self awareness &etc, they would have likely stopped. it is not productive to insist they woke up in the mornings with the intent to psychologically torture a kid for no reason, when that is self-evidently not the case or within their motivations.
I'm speaking annecdotally here but I think many cases of abuse are like this. I think when reckoning with the reality of how abuse functions in our society, you must come to terms with the mundanity of it including the fact that abusive people are primed to overlook the harm of their own actions through the shield of mundanity and (lack of) intent.

Love you guys, stay safe!
anybody else feel that being human is like being a long-time syndicated cartoon character watching the world get more complex while your own design stays the same until youre incongruous with the reality around you??
Do you ever see a complicated meme that expresses a very specific feeling, and while you wouldnât have said it that way, it instantly resonates with you?

Hey did you know there's a tell all book about the behind the scenes of Meta and the author is forbidden from promoting it?
The good news is however that it's already published and can't be stifled and whoever didn't sign the NDA can promote it as much as they want.
She's not allowed to promote it?
Well then, I guess we'll have to do it for her.

Quick question. When someone asks what age you were in a certain year do you give the age that you were before or after your birthday that year?
Do you give the younger or older of the two ages you were that year?
I give the younger (age before your birthday in a given calendar year)
I give the older (age after your birthday in a given calendar year)
