This happened, right?
(Inside Job, Episode 1.08, "Buzzkill")
AHSOKA: What do you want with Anakin Skywalker? MAUL: He is the key to everything. AHSOKA: To bring balance to the Force? MAUL: To destroy. He has long been groomed for his role… as my Master’s new apprentice. AHSOKA: You lie. MAUL: I’m afraid not. In fact, I was so certain of his fate that I orchestrated this war to lure him here with Kenobi, to kill him. Thus, depriving Sidious of his prized pupil.
I really wish I could hear what goes on in the mind of a straight man with a fat ass standing in the mirror bc I’m sure they’ve noticed right... so like do they just move on? I wouldn’t know what to do with myself
This is litrily the saddest thing I’ve ever read
@mschnoes34 care to tell since you have an ass that won’t quit?
Outside of somebody constantly smacking it *cough* @whatsahufflepuff *cough* I wouldn’t really know that it’s a thing

Is it really that damn hard to consider that Windu, the younger and tougher warrior combatant, actually beat Palpatine in a one-on-one duel because he’s just that powerful? There’s no goddamn “amp”. Vaapad in Canon is just a combat style like good graces. Just because Sidious has more of an advantage on Yoda doesn’t disqualify that Windu himself can kick his ass. Two different fighters and Mace is more direct. A fight isn’t a math equation like really.
#mace windu#yeah#the success of a fighter isn't down to some arbitrary power level assignment like some try to reduce it down to#it's not simply a matter of 'well x is stronger than y who's stronger than z so z can't beat x'#it doesn't work like that#different fighting styles have different advantages in different situations#and there are other factors like - as mentioned - age as well as how affected you are by any number of things that may distract you#like tiredness or aches or what have you#or you know the mass slaughter that was felt through the Force#anyway that is all to say that Mace definitely had Palpatine beat in that fight until Anakin cut off his hand#and NO Mace did not use the dark side or come close to it or anything like that to do so (via @jedi-order-apologist) Force skills are like any other skill, mental or athletic or otherwise. To a degree, if you have a trained Olympic track runner up against someone who’s never run a mile in their life, it’s pretty obvious who’s going to win in a race. But if you have two Olympic level runners squaring off in a race, so much depends on your mental focus, on what’s distracting you, on who got the better night’s sleep, on who has eaten the better food beforehand, and sometimes just pure dumb chance. You can’t really put Force skills into a neat little box where they’re never-changing variables. Sometimes the Force is clearer than other times and it depends on a wide array of reasons that could be! This is why sometimes Ahsoka’s visions in The Clone Wars are clear as day to her, other times they’re murky or entirely absent, as she says, they don’t really work like that (being reliably consistent). Mace was an incredible duelist, he won that fight until Anakin cut off his arm in a moment of distraction, and there doesn’t have to be a reason why, other than that Mace is just good. And he didn’t need any kind of boost to be on that level, like, this is one of the leading lights of the Jedi Order, one of their absolute best, of course he’s on that level. /shameless stanning of Mace Windu
Although I was never that good, I used to compete in sport fencing at a pretty high level, and I was close with people that were far better than me, even some that competed internationally. And while there are obviously a lot of differences between fencing and actual fighting of any kind, one of the lessons I learned real early on was that one point, one bout, or even one tournament is a terrible indictor of somebody's skill level, and somebody's skill level is only a very general and inaccurate predictor of how they're going to perform.
As @gffa pointed out, there are a million different things that can influence how a fight goes, and sometimes there isn't any good reason for how things go. I've seen some of the best fencers I know bomb for no good reason. I've seen a complete newbie sweep his get first tournament, then get destroyed the next week. I had a close friend that consistently performed better than me, that could beat people I couldn't even score on, but that I could beat 90% of the time because I just knew him so well.
That's why all these discussions of "who would win in a fight" or "why did x beat y" are so exhausting. Yeah, I definitely think that Mace had the advantage because he used Vaapad and was the overall better fighter than Palpatine, but these things are all so nebulous (and also fictional, and therefore arbitrary) that a lot of these conversations are more frustrating than they are productive.
I actually posted this because in all the years I watched Star Wars, I never could understand how so many people found the idea that Palpatine lost a duel so incredulous.
The gif i’ve posted is Palpatine moving away from Windu after being disarmed. For somebody who supposedly “threw” the fight, Palpatine was incredibly panicked in this situation. I’ve read so many defenses and “perspectives” that just outright contradict what happened.
I posted this because it frustrates the hell out of me that one of the few black character who actually did something significant in this franchise has one of his victories explained away as some form of amplification that works in specific circumstances or perhaps the fight was thrown. It undermines Windu’s status and characterization of him being a very skilled combatant by making his fighting prowess the result of a special style that works only in certain situations. It gives this implication he won because of a arbitrary, mystical power that specifically works in that situation cause otherwise, he wouldn’t have won.
Story-wise, it also undermines several interest stories woven into it; it is far more moving to me that Mace’s victory meant he was VERY close to adverting Order 66. Mace endured a lot from that man and found out he was the ultimate enemy and what it meant since Palpatine took power a decade ago. You bet he fought him with the fate of the Jedi Order looming in his mind. It also made Anakin’s choice that came later SO MUCH more important and powerful, knowing his choice would literally save or destroy the people he once thought to be family. It loses a lot of its tragical roots if Palpatine gets written and characterized to be the author of everyone’s book. And finally, it’s very interesting to see how PALPATINE reacts when all the power is gone and he has no convenient advantage over somebody for once. He RARELY truly struggles so that moment also makes the very circumstances all the more dramatic.
So yes, it’s very frustrating when people rather make Sidious the ultimate villain sue at the expense of another character in a disingenuous manner, especially for a person of color in Star Wars.
