sometimes u go to a ship’s ao3 page and the top 10 fics are like “what if these guys were 2 completely different guys but had the same actors’ faces and character names”
Bold take, it seems, but Shane does not have an eating disorder. His diet is there to symbolize how seriously he takes hockey, how much it means to him, and what he is willing to sacrifice for it. Ilya acknowledges, particularly in TLG, that hockey means less to him than it does to Shane. For Ilya, hockey is something he is good at that allowed him to escape the brutality of his family and Russia. He likes it, but he recognizes that Shane loves it.
Because hockey is a key component of Shane’s personal identity and his first love, he is willing to sacrifice anything for it. His, and his family’s lives have been centred around this goal. Where they travel, what Shane wears, how he appears in public, what he eats. They are all designed to give him a career at the highest level for a long, long time. (As a side note, in Canada when Crosby was in his draft years and his first years in the NHL, there were a lot of articles about how regimented his life, his eating, and his regime were. This is part of why he is still able to play, one of the 10 oldest players in the NHL this year)
This is all really brought to light after Tuna-Gate. He stops following the plan because it’s asking him to sacrifice the one thing he may just love as much as hockey. So, even though he loves hockey, he cheats on it for asking him to sacrifice Ilya. He doesn’t follow the meal plan, he resents the sponsorship demands when his mom talks about Rolex, he rankles at only having two weeks off from the strict regimen of his life in the summer.
When he joins Ilya at All-Stars, I think it’s a cool moment because he has the drink with him at the bar and the audience can see that he is working to find the balance of prioritizing BOTH Ilya and Hockey in his life.
TLG SPOILERS:
I think that also why Ilya picks at Shane so much about his food and eating in TLG. One of the major stressors in their relationship is Ilya’s belief that Shane loves hockey, would choose hockey, over Ilya. Every time Shane won’t share what Ilya is eating, isn’t fun to make breakfast for, doesn’t seek out ‘comfort food’ like Ilya does, feels like a reminder to Ilya that hockey is a priority over him. That’s the whole unreliable narrator there, but the symbolism is consistent in both novels.
Anyway, those are my thoughts and the reason why assigning Shane an eating disorder feels like it’s an on the line reading of the text instead of seeing it as a literary tool.
The absolute arrogant, fuckboi dickery of Ilya Rozanov saying to Shane, “What, That you would come so quick?” as if he, self-styled sex god, didn’t come a mere 21 seconds after Shane got down to business. Yes, Ilya, that 3 seconds you managed to hold out over Shane’s 18 seconds is a lifetime.
re: toxic masc shane x woke king ilya
I’m stealing @naturalpr3y’s tags off this post because they reminded me of the book scene that (to my mind) most clearly debunks the fanon interpretation of the characters:
Heated Rivalry, ch. 4
In the book version of the CCM shoot scene, Ilya doesn’t just call Shane ‘pretty’ like in the show. If he had, maybe the woke!Ilya truthers could argue that he meant it in a non-gendered, why can’t men be pretty too? kind of way, and Shane’s defensiveness was a sign of his ingrained misogyny being contrasted with this enlightened attitude. But book!Ilya tacks on, “Like a doll.” It is explicitly both a feminizing and objectifying comment, and one that (whether intentionally or not) alludes to the racist china doll stereotype:
Furthermore, this is not the first time this sort of comment has been made about Shane. He isn’t assuming in a vacuum that it’s meant as a chirp. White hockey guys who’ve called him “pretty boy” in the past have been insulting him!! And the fact that it’s a repeat occurrence just drives home that it’s a deliberately racialized insult. Being kind of turned on by Ilya saying it is uncomfortable for Shane in large part because of this racial context. It would be quite understandable if hearing this other player—his rival, his supposed equal—using such degrading language was an immediate turn-off, but instead, Shane finds he doesn’t hate it.
If what you took out of all that is “Shane gets offended because he doesn’t want to be compared to icky women, even though Ilya means it as a compliment because he doesn’t think femininity is shameful,” you should maybe go read it again.
Serious question:
If you are reading a wonderful fic that needs an edit, do you offer to edit? Do you let them know that you love their story and that these handful of words are misspelled?
This feels very “you have spinach in your teeth and I want people to see you, not the spinach in your teeth.”
What are your thoughts?
sorry guys the shane’s lingerie is the most grandpa looking pyjamas set and the thickest white socks and you better believe that ilya is loosing his mind even more if shane puts his glasses on
“I was on a strict diet during Episode VIII, and she was like, ‘Kid, get into that fridge and take some chocolate bars. I have many there.’ And I did,” he recalls. “I failed my diet because Carrie Fisher told me to. And it [felt] great.”
-John Boyega on Carrie Fisher
This is the Carrie Fisher post of body positivity reblog for a chocolate bar from her fridge
An extra juicy sentence, with crispy commas, just hits different!
For any non-Crave watchers out there, just want to let you know that Heated Rivalry has now been in the Top Ten watched all but four weeks since it dropped seven months ago.
Personally I do think that sometimes non-hockey fans can end up mischaracterizing Shane and Ilya because they don't know enough about hockey/hockey playstyles
The Ilya we see in Heated rivalry would not be throwing the first punch, he's not an enforcer. Ilya is a star center and a Pest. He wouldn't be doing his job correctly if he was punching players every other game, it would end up with not enough ice time to let him be the playmaker he's paid to be.
But being a pest can be playmaking! Find a player to bait, emotionally push them just enough that they try to fight you, and then get the fuck out of there before the ref gives you both penalties. This gets your team the power play. There is probably someone on Ilya's line dedicated to helping him get out of the fights he starts, and finishing them for him!
I also think this is also something that Shane would respect. Ilya is good at it and it's a good strategy for his team. I don't think Shane would see it as some dirty tactic, because Shane probably thinks everyone with a brain can see it for what it is! He probably thinks everyone should be able to see that being an asshole is a tactic for Ilya, that it's something to ignore and not fall for, that it's a strategy and not personal beef.
I think Shane's more disappointed when a Metro falls for it. Shane sees it as Ilya set up a Looney Toons ass obvious trap and one of his teammates ran into it. Why be mad at Bugs Bunny when you can be mad at your defenceman for falling for a fucking Bugs Bunny trap.
This is why his chirps annoy Shane but don’t actually hurt him! He has the best backhand in the league, so Ilya chirps him. He is less extravagant than other players, so Ilya chirps him. He has a designer, so Ilya chirps him. While it’s personal in its specificity, it isn’t targeted cruelty. Eye roll from Shane and move on.

have you read any good shane breakdown fics?
I’ll call this my compilation of Shane Hollander emotional h/c fics :}}
Something You Can Fix (series) I cannot recommend this enough, truly. It’s based off the idea that somebody records Shane & Rose’s conversation and posts it online.
Dig Two Graves this is a very, very good fic with a very very well-written breakdown from Shane and it’s also a very tough read. There is a graphic self-mutilation in this fic so read with caution!!!
Change, Like the Sky Shane unintentionally attempts suicide after getting outted in this one, so, please, read with caution!
A Year Safe in Your Heart I’ve recommended this one before, it’s a time travel fic where Shane has a. tough time. I really find the way his emotional health is discussed very compelling.
Crystal, Come Right In less of a breakdown fic but I really like this one, it’s an expansion on a possible version of the Club scene where things go differently. Bit of a spoiler, I guess, but it does have a happy ending :}
One Day I’ll Watch as You’re Leaving (and Life Will Lose All It’s Meaning) this is a Hollanov break-up fic + Shane’s very passive in this one so just keep in mind that that is the Shane you will be reading about. Additionally! Shane deals a lot with his suicidal thoughts in this fic, so keep that in mind.
How to Be a Rogue another tough read, please be aware that this discusses Shane being sexually assaulted and it being public knowledge.
It’s All Canadian Vodka’s Fault yeah so Shane thinks Ilya died and this is him Reacting. I really, reallyyyy like Shane’s internal monologue in this one
*Fracture and Collapse by @ilyapasta :} this is one where Shane joins the centaurs and gets injured before playoffs and you just Know he handles that incredibly well
(Incomplete) Ilya; My Ilyusha there is truly so much potential here, this is another time travel fic and I’m Very obsessed with what’s been written so far. Book!Shane gets sent to TV!Universe and, unsurprisingly, there are problems with this. Very veryyyy good so far!
This isn’t totally what you mean BUT I would be remiss not to add a big fav of mine :}
Hope It Hurts Like You Hurt Me I’ve said this about this fic before: it has one of my favorite blowjobs scenes ever :} and unlike these other fics, not a sad breakdown nor would I Really call it a breakdown, it’s Shane Standing On Business
