Thinking about Hotch and how my brain has chosen to smoosh him to fit what I want from his character

Thinking abt how Hotch grew up in a horribly violent home that he did everything in his power to protect his little brother from because Hotch is so incredibly on the side of ‘no one deserves to feel this’ as opposed to ‘I want others to feel how I feel’

Autistic Hotch who hid everything in him as best he could because his home did not treat his differences and needs kindly, who was still considered ‘not quite right’ by those who interacted with him but wouldn’t be diagnosed and able to understand the disconnect he experienced with most people until he was almost 40

Hotch who was always a little lanky and resented how he only really gained weight and muscle well after his father died because he’d been counting down the days until he could fight back from the time he was like 13 but never had the physical strength to

Hotch not knowing how to deal with the myriad of ways this home has effected him and picking up smoking and drinking as a way to make everything feel less

Hotch meeting Haley and knowing he wanted to feel everything if it meant truly experiencing the way she made him feel

Hotch who hated his father and couldn’t understand why he was so devastated by his death. He has two main theories, and the answer is likely a combination of both and some things he hasn’t thought of. 1, that there was a million things he wanted to do and say to him to get some kind of closure after the torture he endured and never got the chance, and 2, that’s one of the biggest changes he’s ever experienced, and he sometimes just needs time to adjust

Hotch smoking on and off since meeting Haley, but after hearing Haley suggest they have kids some day, completely stopping because he would never want to leave Haley and a son behind because he got lung cancer like his father did

Hotchley who love each other to the ends of the Earth and tell each other everything and do their best to show the other the insane amount of love and trust they have for each other

Hotchley who are inseparable and take care of each other and are sweet to each other and always know how to make the other feel safe

Hotch who is completely terrified to have kids because he doesn’t feel like he is good enough to be trusted with a human life but also can’t think of any other life he would rather have with Haley than loving her and raising a kid together

Hotch who grew to have the body type of a brick wall, over six foot and all broad shoulders and stockiness, and is terrified of hurting people and always treats himself as dangerous when he’s in distress because on one or two occasions, his unintended strength has proven to more than anyone expects from Hotch, the gentle giant

Hotch who was nervous about holding Jack because he was so worried he was going to hurt him somehow

Hotch who has autism and obsessive compulsive tendencies and can be debilitatingly paranoid and has only slept well a handful of nights throughout his entire life and thinks he’s a failure at anything other than working and takes years to get therapy for any of this and is so fucking tired and the list goes on

Hotch who learns to take care of Jack after Haley’s death and thinks he’s doing everything wrong but is actually an amazing father

Hotch who finally gets help for how horrible his mental health is and realizes for the first time that there are ways of living that don’t involve him being miserable most of the time

Hotch after Witsec who drives a blue pickup truck to his job as a high school teacher every day and who can’t wait to have Jack in class because his favorite thing is spending time with his son

Hotch who still feels the need to help people, and can find that in teaching kids and looking out for them

Hotch figures out a lifestyle that works for him and a set of medications to help him manage everything better. He develops a special interest in escape rooms to fill his need for problems to solve, and he’s truly content for one of the first times in his life

I’m going to stop at these, but I could literally go on all day

Hey friend! I'm sure I'll find more examples on my rewatch, but I'll share a few that immediately come to mind.

Disclaimer: I am autistic and this headcanon is just for fun. If you disagree, that is totally fine. Many traits of autism can overlap with childhood trauma (among many other things), so that's another totally reasonable explanation for this character!

Reasons I think Aaron Hotchner is Autistic:

Intense, prolonged eye contact, rarely blinks (S5E2, "Haunted")

Collects coins and is "a bit of a nerd" (S1E3, "Won't Get Fooled Again")

Awkward, inability to socialize (literally joined a play to get a girl's attention)

Difficulty breaking routine, hyperfixates on tasks, even when he has important events for his family

Blunted affect - speaks in a monotone, has a flat expression, rarely smiles (S2E6, "The Boogeyman")

Limited responses to conversation, quiet and introverted (despite being lonely and clearly craving social contact, only appears to be friends with people he works with)

Rigidly follows rules, wears the same outfit, obsessed with a traditional depiction of authority (became a lawyer, only wears formal outfits, drawn to coaching/leader positions)

Blunt and forthright, even when others would consider it inappropriate, and even when it does not advance the case (S6E7, "Middle Man")

Poor interoception (sensing internal state) as displayed by his difficulty recognizing when he is in pain (S9E5, "Route 66")

Difficulty training others to emotionally handle the job (S2E15, "Revelations")

Close personal relationship with Gideon and Spencer, who I also headcanon as Autistic

Regularly asks everyone if they are alright, possibly due to difficulty recognizing when someone needs comfort versus when they'd like to be left alone

quick thing that this is my fanon flash which has nuance and depth and i’m well aware how much of a jackass and unlikable canon flash is, i project a lot

(these first few are ab trans and sexuality hc but there are others)

flash is non-binary and uses he/it pronouns but also doesn’t mind they/them

flash is the type of trans person to ironically make transphobic jokes about itself, this landed it in the principals office one time

flash isn’t closeted about being trans but doesn’t talk about him being trans often as he still uses he/him pronouns and is cool with masculine compliments, however being called a guy/man/boy makes him uncomfortable and would ask people to stop if they did it excessively.

flash also is omnisexual with sort of a 60% girls 40% guys preference

flash was oblivious to it until someone(most likely mj) called him out on it. he would act around the same about his sexuality about his gender after a little bit of freaking out about what people would think of him.

flash likes sewing, not really making stuff just like fixing clothes(nothing noticeable, it obviously has to look good at all times🌚) and adjusting them

flash, instead of football, does track, not only because imagining flash running in booty shorts is hilarious but still gives him his name, though i could totally see him still doing football

flash has adhd and anxiety

flash can be a big softie when it comes to relationships(relationship = both romantic and platonic) but due to it being insecure it’s really hard to get it to be like that

flash when he gets a really close relationship with someone actually really enjoys affection, but he would never ever ask for it

flash also really likes gifts, specifically handmade or specially picked out gifts. cause he can have about anything he wants but it means a lot that that thing is one of a kind from his friend. again, he’s like “ew this handmade bracelet sucks” then always wears it under his sleeve or something

i love the idea of the entire batfam being hypercompetent. just like. good at stuff.

because yea, they’ve all been trained extensively by a variety of teachers and mentors and various learning experiences. they all have their skills that they’ve honed to perfection for years. but there are just some things that they’re a natural at, things that make the unique, things that give them an edge just enough to rise to the top in a world full of gods and monsters.

yes, damian’s a trained assassin, and has been since birth. yes, damian works hard to keep his skills up. but the weapons training? it comes to him almost naturally. maybe it was something passed down from both bruce and talia, both deadly fighters in their own right. maybe it has something to do with the al ghul bloodline. either way, damian is absolutely deadly with a weapon in his hand. a blade can arc through the air faster than the human eye can see when it’s in his hand. he can work horrible wonders with an unbalanced sword, and turn combat into an art with a balanced one. tiny fingers wrap around the rough handle of a whip with surety, and he can slip batarangs into his palms and up his sleeves without them ever being seen.

tim’s got one of the most analytical minds of any vigilante alive. he’s not a supergenius or anything, and he leaves the higher-order computer skills and tech to barbara. but to him, the world is a puzzle after a puzzle, and tim never fails to solve them. figuring out dick and bruce’s identities. taking apart a grapple gun and fitting the parts together to make a beartrap. knowing exactly what to say and what to do to get bruce to break and bend and let him in. catching patterns in the chemical formulas of crane’s various toxins. reading through the lies that fell from his family’s lips like raindrops from the sky. everything and everyone tim knows are made of jagged pieces, but tim figured out early on how to put them together, step back, and take a look at the bigger picture.

people say cass doesn’t have any people skills, due to the years spent in isolation, spent alone. but the reality is, she has too many. reading people has always come easy, body language is an open book to her. but what many didn’t know was that there was a big difference between reading a book and analyzing it. it’s easy to see the insecurities of each of her brothers. it’s much harder to know exactly what to do or say to let them bring down their walls for just a moment, show their affection and prove their love in the smallest but most important of ways. it’s easy to see the poison of a smirk on a reporter’s lips, to catch the probing gleam of their eyes. it’s much harder to turn the reporter around, chasing their own tail until the story they were searching for in the first place was lost. it’s easy to pinpoint teammates and other heroes’ strengths and weaknesses, to see them play out in the field and plan for them the way every bat did. it’s much harder to make the others aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, and to convince them to put aside their ego and work on bettering themselves. but cass seemed to have a knack for it.

jason may like playing up the role of the blustering, bull-headed wild card of the family.  mafia-don-from-movies meets muscled brawn. but he’s got a literary mind at the heart of it all. he’s real good at codes and decryptions, because he’s read about them before. he’s lightning fast a nygma’s riddles, because he’s poured through the books from which riddler gets his inspiration a hundred times over. life and art turn into one in his mind, and overlaying his family’s stubbornness and trust issues with novel style analyzations and character assessments that help him understand their interactions a little better. words float off the page and wind their way inside his head, and some may call him dramatic when he can’t force himself to speak so he uses quotes instead, but never say echolalia wasn’t useful.

each member of their worn out and sewn together family had their niche, their own particular area in which they excelled. but dick was brought up in a world where there was only two protecting gotham, two partners working together to keep an entire city from falling apart. jack of all trades, master of none, but better of master than one, dick always said, eyes twinkling with mischief. because sure, his acrobatic prowess was unchallenged. but he grew up on the road visiting city after city, country after country, and it gave him a head for languages. not even dick is sure how many languages and regional dialects he actually knows. his darling little smile was honed to perfection, and interrogations with him never lasted that long. you could drop him in the middle of nowhere and he’d always find his way to civilization, or you could toss him in the middle of a bustling but unfamiliar city, and he’d always make his way back.

Percy being the third parent headcanons (Part 1 [maybe?]) (not really canon compliant)

Percy Weasley has trauma from being the third parent, that’s my main headcanon for him. He did so much at such a young age and it hurts, a lot. 

More on this:

- When all five of the youngest children were kids, Molly was busy lecturing Fred and George in the mornings, Percy helped Ron and Ginny get ready. He would guide them into the bathroom and place them in the bath together (more time efficient). He scrubbed them clean and helped them get dressed.

- He usually woke early, like at 6am, because it was the only time when the house was quiet. 

- Especially in his teenage years, he was like a venting dump for his mother (this is where eldest sister syndrome comes in). Molly would rant about how worried she was for her kids (mainly Ginny, Charlie and Bill) and how concerned she is, and Percy would comfort her and tell her that he’ll keep an eye on them and all that.

- I always imagine the three eldest Weasleys with bigger age gaps than JKR tried to say they were. Percy is eight years younger than Charlie, not three, and around 10 (?) years younger than Bill. 

- He parents his siblings the same way Molly does, as that was his example of parenting at home. He didn’t use favouritism and all that, but he was kinda strict (as strict as a ten-year-old can be) on all of the kids and was very firm on rules. Honestly can’t blame him, he was only a kid. 

- Definitely both a mother hen and the parent friend.

- Was like a father figure to Ron and Ginny, especially to Ron, seeing as Arthur wasn’t home a lot.

- I saw in a fic once that Percy was the one to handle Ginny’s sheets whenever she was on her period, and I honestly like this headcanon. I thought he would have been the one to help her out because Molly probably was a. busy b. didn’t want to teach about that sort of thing. Also he probably gave them a quick puberty ed (Arthur did sex ed with the kids).

- Did not realise until perhaps the age of seventeen that this was not normal, that he shouldn’t have been the third parent, that he was not obligated to raise his younger siblings. 

- Was assigned to babysitting religiously when Molly went shopping, she never brought the kids with her and she never asked Arthur to just come in for his free hour. Nope, Percy babysitted them.

- House went to chaos once Percy left for Hogwarts, their entire system fell apart without their third parent to rely on. The kids were rowdier than ever, there was no Percy to cut their breakfast toast into the shapes they liked, no Percy to straighten out their clothes and to straighten their hair with his hands, nothing. (Molly could never quite forget Ron yelling that he hated her and that he wished Percy was there instead.)

- An embarrassing habit he had was doing the things he did with his younger siblings to his friends - like fussing over their ties or gentle kisses to the forehead, etc. Oliver had a blast with it, did not mind at all, basked in affection Percy light. McGonagall noticed and became increasingly concerned. 

If I do a part 2 (I probably will), I will most likely focus on Percy realising that it was indeed not normal, especially the last point I made. Maybe I’ll even write a fic on it (once I update my 1k wips lol).

Sakusa grew up in grays and neon. Tokyo, concrete, skyscrapers, and neon lights. He also grew up reminded to keep a clean image, practical, focused, and sharp. Life was something he planned on, worked for, and achieved. It was a marble set in motion, creating a domino effect of steps he had to make to get to another.

Somewhere in this rush of life and pace that seemed to be dragging him, pushing and pulling and wanting him to do more, Sakusa wondered if there was something more.

Something that maybe could soften the edges, smoothen them like waves gently crashing against stones at the shore. Gently, because though he might be briery and prickly, he wished for something tender.

Extremely unpopular opinion, but LWJ can give NHS a run for his money when it comes to being the spoiled baby of the family

@over-the-misty-mountains It’s more obvious in the novel and I’m trying not to spoil it for you!

In the novel, LWJ is LQR’s darling and if he does anything wrong that’s because some evil fiend has corrupted this pure golden child. LXC is, well, LXC. Plus, novel LWJ can be quite selfish but he rarely suffers any consequences. Like, sure, they go through the motions of punishing him, but he consistently gets the lightest possible punishment for his offense. Not always, but almost all the time. And then we have tidbits like “pets are strictly forbidden unless Wangji wants rabbits in which case we’ll turn a blind eye” or “oh Wangji mentioned yesterday he wanted lotus pods so today there just happens to be lotus pods in Clouds Recesses, what a coincidence, I’m sure these are unconnected events!”

NHS, on the other hand, does whatever he wants and then NMJ periodically decides this is going too far and he has to fix NHS’s behavior TODAY. So he also faces consequences regularly! They just never stick. (And NHS throws tantrums but they don’t change NMJ’s mind.)

In CQL, NMJ is less strict and, for some reason, the Lan are generally stricter (not just with LWJ, with everyone.) So this isn’t as easy to spot. But it’s still there!

Things NHS likes/is good at: fans, getting people to help him with his problems, having fun/freedom. Things NHS dislikes/is bad at: sabers, running his sect/responsibility in general, violence. I don’t have to tell you that he does what he likes and doesn’t do what he dislikes.

Things LWJ likes/is good at: following rules, traveling to help people/investigate stuff, mentoring juniors. Things LWJ dislikes/is bad at: playing nice with people he dislikes/diplomacy, politics (both intra sect and inter sect), forgetting WWX. Guess what he does and what he doesn’t.

Pretty much every other character in LWJ’s generation or in his brother’s generation is constantly doing things they don’t want to.

And um. LWJ is Gusu Lan’s heir until LXC has a son. He definitely doesn’t care about that in the novel, and in CQL he’s doing an amazing job systematically antagonizing every single sect leader he meets. Even JIN LING knows better than to do that!

These are all very good points and i love that op put them so poignantly! Lwj has flaws and he’s so much more interesting when we acknowledge them!!

I honestly think it’s in many ways simply the “youngest child syndrom” and even further “youngest child of a deeply traumatised family” syndrom

Both the nie brothers and the lan brothers loose their parents early (qingheng-jun may have been alive but he wasn’t exactly present). LQR is basically defined by his role as uncle and teacher and lan xichen is a care taker to boot both as a sect leader and a bother

On the point of this being more obvious in the novel (and maybe you just didn’t mention it because you didn’t want to spoil @/over-the-misty-mountains) but the most obvious example to me is lan wangji’s choices after guanyin temple. In cql? Stays, helps his clan recover, becomes chief cultivator, (presumably) supports lan xichen. In the novel? Fucks off to night hunt and fuck his husband for three months. That is … wow. Like … I get it dude, you waited for 13 years and you’re finally happy but your brother just basically went through the same trauma as you did 13 years ago. Would it kill you to wait for a hot second and check if he’s okay? That is a frankly extraordinarily selfish decision (This is not character bashing btw. If lan wangji didn’t have flaws, he wouldn’t be my favourite character ^^)

That decision imo perfectly exemplifies the fact that lwj is as much used to his brother taking care of him as nhs, while the opposite is just not expected. That’s not to say that both don’t love their older brothers (they obviously do. Case in point nhs’s years spanning revenge scheme and lwj ultimately returning due to his brother) but they automatically (and maybe unconsciously because the moment lxc’s is brought to his attention lwj goes back) put their own interest before their older brother’s

@inessencedevided yes, I was avoiding spoilers, but that’s for me the biggest example of LWJ failing to recognize both his brother’s exact emotional state, and his own political duty to step in if LXC is effectively unable to be a sect leader.

I also think of the Banquet extra, when WWX asks LWJ if secluded LXC is alright and he answers, and I quote “Not really… . In the years when I was in secluded meditation, Brother had always been the one to comfort me.”

That’s very telling. It’s not that LWJ doesn’t try to look after his brother. He does. He just has no clear idea how, and I’m pretty sure it’s because LXC won’t let him. I feel like LXC withdraws, and LWJ doesn’t know how to push without being disrespectful at best and making LXC feel worse at worst. All this to say, LWJ probably never had the chance the develop the habit of taking care of LXC the way LXC takes care of him.

And I think yeah, this is absolutely about both the Nie and the Lan losing their parents very young! But it’s not even just about the older boys taking a parenting role. I think it’s also very much about the older boys who had to grow up too fast doing their best to let their brothers be young for just a little longer - and ultimately overdoing it so they end up somewhat more childish than they would’ve been if they had had a normal childhood. I think it’s part of how they cope? “My life sucks but it’s so my brother’s won’t, so it’s not just meaningless suffering, it’s totally my choice” kind of rationalization.

Anyway, besides being a somewhat endearing trait AND a flaw at once, NHS and LWJ being somewhat coddled growing up explains, to me, a lot about their actions. Neither of them seems to process strong negative emotions well. Grief, mainly, but also things like frustration. Because they always have people looking out for them, I think they aren’t particularly good when it comes to having strategies to deal with things not going their way. If you are spared from small distressing events, when something VERY distressing happens, you just don’t have the experience to deal with it in the best way possible. So, uh… *gestures vaguely at entire plot*… happens

These are all SUCH lovely points! I’m now contrasting their behavior with Jiang Wanyin, who while a younger brother as well, is the heir of Yunmeng Jiang, and his whole life is a series of things he didn’t want to do but was responsible for? His relationship with WWX is complex and messy and honestly one of my favorites, but I think his resentment for LWJ probably stems from this; he is the most righteous and talented and well regarded because there are no consequences for his actions. And the same for NHS; NHS doesn’t know what he’s doing? It’s okay, Er-ge and San-ge will make allowances for him and the other sects will fall in line. Jiang Wanyin’s siblings could never take the weight of his responsibilities, he retained his parents until the age of fifteen, and I guess… It shows.
