I've just learned that the Turkish Delight was enchanted, so you couldn't stop eating it until it killed you, among other things, and like?? What the fuck?? Do Edmund's siblings ever know about that at all?? Did he ever tell them? I always felt like calling him a traitor was very harsh considering the circumstances, but I can't believe they would allow such a thing to continue if they knew, especially coming from Edmund himself??
i actually don't think edmund himself ever learns about that particular aspect of the witch's food (seeing as it's relayed to us via the omniscient narrator) but it's clear the narnians have some sort of knowledge of the witch's food being bad to eat, and there's a continuing wariness throughout the rest of the books about enchanted and dangerous food (see the bit about aslan's table on ramandu's island, for example, and honestly the garden in tmn itself) which i would assume is partly biblical and partly folkloric what with faerie food and such. so i feel like he wouldn't have told them because he wouldn't have known, at least not the finer details, but i imagine there were some indicators after the fact that it wasn't wholly normal (which i shall be exploring At Some Point in the only other edmund fic i plan on writing. fun fact. that's why i've never posted about this lmao). also correct me if i'm wrong, i don't think his siblings ever call edmund a traitor. (actually it's been a minute since i read the book but in the film they won't even say the word betrayal; they say he's been captured, and mr beaver is the one who says edmund betrayed them) peter quite explicitly blames himself for edmund running away, and it's edmund himself who says the "even a traitor may mend" line, which indicates to me he probably beat himself up more over it than the rest of them did. lewis didn't tend to get too deep into things like that as the stories move at a pretty decent clip (typical of children's literature i've found) so stylistically it makes sense there's not a lot of time spent on that line from edmund. and i don't think he's saying it out of self-pity or even self-flagellation by that point. just stating a fact, yknow? because there IS an element of free will in all this, especially examining it from the standpoint of lewis' beliefs. even if you don't go in for christianity (which lord knows i sure don't anymore) the text was written with a very apple and eve mindset where the temptation was there and the circumstances were there but there was an active choice made, even if it wasn't fully informed, and i mean i could disagree with lewis all day long about theology and sin and that sort of thing, but imo from the text's intention, the enchantment wasn't completely stripping edmund of all his free will, nor was it forced upon him; however, neither was edmund's rescue and redemption forced upon him. there's elements of choice both ways. i think this rambled out of hand sorry i've just seen too many posts going either one way ("edmund is a terrible person who sold his siblings out for candy that's not even good and i hate him") or the other ("edmund did absolutely nothing wrong at all and he's god's specialest angsty sad baby boy who must be protected at all costs" etc) so. yeah idk i'm yapping.
Did someone say TNG stickers?

I do think one of the most interesting things early rnm did was look at the ways in which love and connection exists in such a broad wavelength that it’s truly impossible to try and define these relationships into tiny little correctly labeled boxes
it’s about Liz calling Kyle family but citing how this is different to him being her brother, it’s about Alex saying Michael is his family, it’s about Max and Isobel being twins without sharing an ounce of blood, it’s about the connection Rosa and Isobel have through something as cruel as being victims of the same man, it’s about the way Max’s relationship with his sister is something that is held at the same standard of worth and importance as his romantic relationship, it’s about how Maria and Alex are best friends yet it’s deeper than that- they love each other in a way that would be considered and easily labeled romantic by so many relationship standards, it’s how all of this doesn’t even touch in the inner mist comolexities if every dynamic
love everyone contributing to the absolute hoard of dice for emily to roll

Okay, Bagginshield people, it's time to talk about the subtle scene that plays on repeat in my mind. Let's talk about how much was conveyed to us in this scene in such a short amount of time. This entire scene is only 18 seconds long, and it's one of my favorite 18 seconds in the films.
Bilbo is chasing right after Thorin, following him so intently that despite Balin being in front of him, he doesn't notice him turn off, and it takes Balin baling out to him in order for him to look back. He, in turn, naturally calls Thorin. Who stops dead in his tracks.
Thorin turns without a second thought and immediately backtracks. He's looking at Bilbo at first, but quickly sees the dragon rounding the corner, which alerts Bilbo.
Bilbo turns back on the dragon. This seems insignificant, but it's so important. He didn't run for his safety; he turned to look at Thorin in terror. Bilbo is smart, very smart. The words coming next haven't left Thorin's mouth, but Thorin is just self-sacrificing enough, and the margin of error is small enough that he had to know what he would say.
He had to tell Bilbo to follow Balin. Quick and sharp, an order. Look at his eyes. He knows full well he might be about to meet his own end. His eyes go from the dragon to Bilbo and back in quick succession about four times. HE. IS. ABOUT. TO DIE. He knows it, and he can't look away from his Bilbo even though running right now would make the most sense. This is articulated further later.
And this is the part that grips me in my soul. In this entire interaction, Bilbo hasn't turned his back on Thorin a single time. Even now, he's walking backward. He doesn't even notice Smaug about to spit fire, and it takes Balin, dragging him through the door, for him to go.
Here it is again in slow motion, focused on Bilbo.
Even the way he says Thorin's name is steeped in panic and denial as he knows Thorin isn't coming but still holds his hand out to him.
These are the last looks of two people who think this will be the last time they see the person they love.
Thorin delays his turning back as well for a few milliseconds more of watching Bilbo go. By this point in the movies, it's abundantly clear just how much Bilbo means to Thorin. Even down to making sure he went with him when they split up to confuse Smaug in the first place.
All of this emotion, all of this pit of your stomach inevitability, all in just 18 seconds.
