Hi, hey, hello! I’m Ananda (she/her) but if that’s too hard you can call me moon. I’m an aspiring writer in my 20s who also loves anime, music, reading, and anything space-themed.

I have one work that has been published (it’s just blurbs in a collection of short stories from students I tutor). I have 1 WIP that I hope to get traditionally published, but many ideas waiting to be explored!

My WIP is Spiritwalker, a fantasy about a witch named Daron living in a world of plague and war that is separated by clans who don't trust each other. She is her clan's seemingly perfect heir, but her whole worldview is changed when she is sent to a magic school and discovers secrets literally hidden in the walls.

I'm an associate at a nonprofit that tutors kids with writing and publishes their stories. I absolutely love working there!

I graduated from college recently!! My degree is in English with a concentration in professional writing and a minor in Africana Studies.

I’m a music junkie and will listen to most genres. My favorites are alt/rock, vocaloid, hip hop, and 2000s pop (I’m a 2000s baby)

My favorite book genre is fantasy but I read my fair share of sci-fi, mystery, and lit fics. I especially like fiction stories centered around the Black experience like Caucasia by Danzy Senna and Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson.

Antihero or villain protagonist?

Villain. Oh how I live for characters who are unapologetically evil.

Lies by omission or lies with a smile?

Lies with a smile. As I previously stated, I love unapologetically evil characters.

Your character gets caught, do they talk their way out or run?

Most of my characters would talk their way out. I love smart characters even more than evil ones haha. But Alsephina...she's interesting. She has the power to run and she loves using it to sneak away, but she's also a talker. In conclusion, she'd do both. Simultaneously.

Morally grey love interest or morally grey best friend?

Don't even get me started on this. I despise morally grey love interests because most of the mainstream ones aren't even morally grey! They're just bad people who make dumb excuses for their actions and never even apologize. I mostly write about friendship anyway and I think a morally grey best friend would make for an interesting dynamic.

Your protagonist's fatal flaw: too much trust or not enough?

Not enough for Daron. It's not that she mistrusts people, she just doesn't believe in having emotions or relationships that are anything but professional.

Writing the betrayal scene or writing the aftermath?

The betrayal scene!

Crime of passion or crime of calculation?

Crime of passion. I love exploring strong emotions and how dangerous they can be.

Redemption arc or "they were right all along" arc?

Redemption arc. Zuko changed me as a child and this is who I am now.

The confession scene happens in a courtroom, a rooftop, or a bed?

Rooftop. It's secluded, it's slightly dangerous, it's everything.

Your character keeps one honest thing about themselves, is it their name, their past, or their feelings for one person?

Daron's name has an important meaning in her language so that's what she'd keep. Alsephina, the hopeless romantic, would keep her feelings for one person.

So I found this book at a little free library outside my job and I was so excited because I read it about ten years ago and absolutely adored it. Seriously, this book is why my ipad’s lock screen is a wolf to this day, despite the fact that I forgot most of it by now.

I wanted to see if it still held up. Short answer: yes. Longer answer below the cut.

Oh my god it was so refreshing to read a fantasy from the 2010’s. It’s been so long I forgot how good they were compared to most modern ones (you know what I mean, mostly talking about romantasy). For one, I adore the effort put into the friendships in this book. My biggest problem with modern fantasies is that the friends feel like ornaments to the main character. They have no awkward phase after first becoming friends, they have no conflicts, and they have no emotional growth because they aren’t deemed as important as the romantic relationships. This book is a romance, but there are two friendships that are also important to the story, and neither of them are easy.

I also love the originality in this book. The werewolves shift because of temperature, not because of the moon. Some other unique things are that the text is blue and the temperature is listed at the beginning of each chapter. You can really tell the author loves the craft of writing and put a lot of care into this book.

The prose is beautiful, which is kinda expected when one of the main characters is a lyricist. My favorite quote was “You’re like a song that I heard when I was a little kid but forgot I knew until I heard it again.” Ughhh this feeling is so relatable in such a specific way.

My only gripe is that the romance was too rushed. I understand that the characters fell in love before they really knew each other, but is it too much to ask that they actually get to know each other for a few days before they start kissing? I’m a slow burn lover to my core.

This book is a good break from the plethora of revolution and war-filled YA fantasies. It’s more of a slow, intrapersonal story about retaining one’s humanity. Ten years after I first read it, it’s still my favorite werewolf book, and it’ll probably stay that way.

So now I'm watching a 4 hour video on the entire history of planet earth (for research purposes) and taking detailed notes.

Also…this might not be helpful, but have you tried creating WIPI in another medium? Comics, animation, series of short stories? Maybe the reason you’re stuck is because it isn’t meant to be written as a you’re doing it now.

Here’s some other tips I always tell my students (I’m an elementary school writing tutor) that have been working for me. When you get stuck, think of sensory details. What are the characters hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, and feeling. It doesn’t seem like much but this has gotten me through so many writing blocks. Also, try to think of the main message you want to send the audience. Once you get the main idea the details will fall into place. Hope this is helpful :)

That's so cool! Was the house just abandoned? Did it burn? The colours paired with the loneliness is really neat.

The house fascinates me too! I don’t know its story; it was already like that when I moved into the neighborhood, but the bright colors contrasting with the disrepair is really interesting to me too.

Also! It’s the only house on that street in that state. And it’s been almost two years since I first noticed it. Who knows how long it was left like that for? I know some people will think it’s creepy but it’s so exciting to me!
