Your Guide to the Headspace

This post is intended for people with DID/OSDD!

The headspace/inner world is a visualization tool to increase communication with alters and ease switches of fronters. This sort of meditative tool has been used in therapy for DID for over 50 years and is often used in conjunction with hypnotherapy. It should be clarified that the internal world is a tool separate of DID and not related to the diagnosis- you can cultivate an internal world if you do not have DID and you can have DID and not have an internal world. It’s just a visualization tool. 

For more information about creating a headspace or an inner world, you may want to look up information on methods of loci, memory palaces, or the roman room. Inner worlds have been used to assist memory for thousands of years and the methods used to build these worlds can easily be applied to the creation of a headspace. 

First, you’ll want to determine if you already have a headspace. If you’ve seen it before, you have one. If not, assume you don’t have one already. 

Starting with a familiar building or room is easiest, but if you’d like to build one yourself, go for it! You can use a site like this one to design a floorplan. I highly recommend collecting a folder of images or browsing Pinterest to collect inspiration pictures. Give yourself time and draw out whatever you’d like. Your inner world doesn’t have to be a house, it could be a school, a store, something far larger, something outdoors, etc. You’re really only limited by your imagination. Start small at first. 

It’s easiest to access it through meditation or through hypnosis. I don’t recommend doing the latter without help, and please be safe with mediation as it can disorient those with dissociative disorders! If you have poor luck with meditation, try visualizing your headspace while in bed. Pick a dark spot if you’re having trouble meditating and focus on letting thoughts go. This might help with meditation. Try not to play distracting music. 

If you have a way to visualize alters, work on visualizing them as well and assigning them places to be in the headspace. If you’re starting with a familiar room, start trying to facilitate communication with alters while visualizing the room. Give it time to stick!!! Be patient with this! It will take a while to access. Having faceclaims for your alters may help with visualizing them. If you feel as though you’re forcing a conversation, I wouldn’t worry about it- take your time.

You may want to do more work with meditation or look into methods people use for astral projection (it’s helped me). I’m here if you have questions.
