YOUR PICTURES: Bradford Says Everyone Stays.
More than five hundred people attended a vigil held in Bradford’s City Park on Wednesday 13th July. The event was organised in reaction to a reported rise in racist and xenophobic attacks and hate crime since the EU referendum.
The organiser of the event, Javaad Alipoor, took to Facebook after the Brexit results came through on Friday 24 June and created an online group called ‘Migrants Are Welcome in Bradford – Here to Stay’.
Javaad said: “Bradford, our city and a city in which I was raised, has been at the forefront of welcoming migrants and refugees from all over the world including the EU. It is a city that has shifted and grown as community after community has made it their home. When I heard about the spate of racist attacks, and David Cameron’s comments about migrants being able to remain “for now” I knew I had to do something as a way of solidarity and to bring together everyone who is intent on keeping Bradford safe for all its residents.”
The crowd heard speeches from a number of speakers including representatives from Hope not Hate, The Syrian Association of Yorkshire and local unions.

YOUR BLOGS: Isma’s Blog
Isma Almas is a writer, social worker and comedian. A former broadcaster with BBC Radio Leeds, she has successfully taken her one woman show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Isma is a proud Bradfordian.
Highlights of June
1. We went on a mini European adventure in the motorhome. We travelled through France, Belgium and Holland before catching a ferry back from Rotterdam to Hull. We stayed on a beach in France, behind a Lidl in Belgium and ate pancakes in a windmill in Holland.
2. I avoided emptying the chemical loo. But was then forced to listen to the gory details of events that occur when the loo is emptied. Apparently, ‘splashback’ is a major issue.
3. I made a mental note to bring disposable plastic gloves for next time. And a waterproof apron. And Wellies.
4. My boy caught chickenpox whilst we were away and we managed to communicate non-verbally with a Dutch speaking pharmacist to get some cream to apply. Our communication mainly consisted of scratching ourselves and making clucking noises whilst flapping our pretend wings. We now know that chicken pox in Dutch is waterpokken. Please remember that for future reference, to save yourself humiliation in a Dutch pharmacy.
5. My gorgeous little boy is adopted and I became his mum about a year and a half ago. I’ve missed many milestones with him, so it was lovely that he hung on and waited till he was mine before catching chickenpox.
