Am I the only person who is infatuated with Elizabeth? Sheās so intelligent, kind, and intriguing! Her fascination with entomology (the study of bugs) is so endearing. I need fics for her. My beloved, my wife!
overlooking the brown latin lead (Oscar Isaac) of a film (Frankenstein) in favour of his white aussie co star (Jacob Elordi) , and only ever acknowledging said film for said white aussie cast member (Jacob Elordi), is a very interesting way to watch a Guillermo Del Toro film rooted in latin trauma, Academy Award Voters (and to whoever else it might concern), but that's just me.
The implication of Victor being an undergrad in the novel is incredibly funny because, yes, it explains so much of his behavior and audacity, but it also means Victor's apartment could've been some sort of student housing, which means there were other undergrads living there, too.
Which means when Victor wakes up to the Creature standing by his bed like āŗļø, and Victor freaks out and runs away, the Creature could have ostensibly wandered into the hallway after him, only to be met with a pack of incredibly drunk-after-an-all-night-1818-rager yet well-meaning frat boys.
Who were so blasted that they were just like, "Dude, what, do you play rugby? Holy shit, he's fuckin' huge, look at this fuckin' guy! Absolute unit!" And they all whooped and hollered and just ushered the Creature into their dorm to keep the party going.
And the Creature was just like, "?????" but very pleased to find other people vaguely shaped like him, so he lets them because he may be just minutes old but he knew early on all he really wanted was one (1) buddy and now there's, like, a herd of them and they're all having a blast.
When the guys inevitably pass out, sloshed beyond all sense, he just sits and waits for them to wake up and when they do, later that morning, he's poking at one of them to make sure the guy is still breathing, and the kid wakes up and yells for a second and squints at the 8 foot-tall (rugby???? player????) guy in their dorm and is like, "Shit, what is that?"
And another one squints at him and goes, "I don't fuckin' know, bro, but he can throw us so hard. Did you see how David just...fuckin'...flew out the window last night? Just hurled David like it was no big deal. That was awesome."
David groans and puts his head under his pillow because his headache is awful but he lets out a pained, muffled, "that was awesome" in agreement.
So in a rare case of wholesome frat boy camaraderie, this herd of college roommate boys, all of whom are dumb as rocks but well-meaning, just take the Creature in because, "There's this huge fucking monster guy and it's the coolest thing we've ever seen."
This would possibly mean the Creature is socialized to be a dumb-as-rocks frat boy, but because I cannot allow that to happen and because there is no universe in which he would not be into poetry, he somehow also gets socialized by liberal arts majors and is just as Sensitiveā¢, it rubs off on his frat buddies, who start saying things like, "No, man, it's Sturm und Drang, it's, like, the fuckin' vast rolling of the soul that, like...fuckin' eschews Enlightenment rationalism."
But some of the boys' lingo inevitably rubs off on the Creature so when, months later, Victor comes back to get all of his things with Henry post-mental breakdown, he bumps into a crowd of rowdy guys playfully jostling each other, and that crowd includes an 8-foot tall dude in a letterman jacket holding a volume of Goethe in one hand and a tankard of beer in the other, and he scoffs down at Victor and goes, "Accursed Creator! Why didst thou abandon me in my hour of need? Fuckin' lame."
And all his buddies go, "Yoooooo!" and high five.
LMFAO I love this so much!
doot doot just gonna take some references of Victor's flat for reasons, oh this shot is perfect lemme just--
THE FUCK IS THAT
HELLO?!?!?!?
V-VICTOR WHY IS--why is there a--
HAS THAT BEEN THERE THE WHOLE TIME????
Victor, dude, please, this changes so much about my assumptions re: you and animals, wHY do you HAVE thIS
I HAVE BEEN INFORMED AND INDIVIDUALLY VERIFIED
that taxidermy animals were often displayed in pharmacies/apothecaries in the middle ages onward. Crocs and Alligators were most common bc of the association with wisdom and learning, and displaying them hanging from the ceiling was also very common
so Victor is hanging his croc right above his plants which means THOSE ARE MEDICINAL and also VICTOR IS A HUGE FUCKING NERD
Omg that is so cool
Who I expect to be under my Christmas Tree tomorrow:
He wasnāt there⦠š¢
so I'm looking into where EXACTLY everything is in Frankenstein, like, geographically bc I want to do right by my fic and--
nevermind this is BULLSHIT
1.) Victor's Flat 2.) Frankenstein Manor 3.) the Tower

I find the whole unreliable narrators thing in Frankenstein fascinating. Here's a specific way: the death (and life) of William. He's drastically different from the book, and not that much more prominent. Nevertheless there's meat to it, though subtle.
It puts everything into perspective. Firstly, since the second half/last third (I'm not sure) of the movie is the Creature's Tale, a plot contrivance inevitably comes up. How did the Creature know what William's last words were to Victor?
My immediate guess is that the Creature is making that up to throw it in Victor's face. In the book, the Creature explicitly wants to teach Victor a lesson by killing his young brother and framing a girl Victor also grew up with, leading to her death. I think in this new, more compassionate adaptation, the Creature is probably hijacking William's relationship with Victor to make a point: this is how I feel about you. Victor undoubtedly feels guilt about William's death, as much as someone with NPD can. The Creature only killed him accidentally this time, but he probably would feel a little bad about it. It's maybe his way to absolve himself, to wish that William felt similar disgust and fear toward Victor.
But far more prominently this unreliable telling puts everything Victor had said about his brother into perspective. I don't believe that Victor treated William as well as he claims in life. The glossy idealistic story Victor tells shows him heaping his brother with praise, trusting him with the smallest of tasks, happy to have his support. And yet he wants to fuck his brother's fiancƩe and almost does so, without remorse. He introduces his brother with a barely disguised resentment that William "killed" their mother. Victor wants to pretend that he ever had a chance with Elizabeth, he wants to pretend that the Creature and Elizabeth want each other and that the Creature is "stealing" her away. Victor claims he had a change of heart and tried to rescue the Creature, just like he claims that he tried to save Harlander (even though right after he examines his body pretty coldly hmm...) and he claims that William is his most trusted confidant and beloved baby brother.
And yet, according to the unreliable narration of the Creature, William has always feared Victor, and has always seen him for the narcissistic monster that he is. There's some evidence to back this up. Elizabeth is immediately hostile toward Victor when they had just met. All they did was have a philosophical debate. She seems guarded and weary around him, and while pretending he's duped her at the confessional, talks about how controlling he is. He disgusts her. These are harsh words, these are value judgments that it takes more than an encounter or two to solidify. She probably heard all the tea from William. His introductory scene as an adult is complaining that he made himself small and quiet to make room for Victor's grandiose delusions and personality.
I also wonder why Elizabeth is so unwilling to cheat on William? Because Victor is embellishing their flirtatious relationship to begin with and she never wanted him? Because Elizabeth decides to do the right thing and her values are that important to her? Because she actually loves William and is perhaps even protective of him?
And the way Victor frames the brotherly relationship as entrusting William (perfect and loyal) with the construction of the lab but from a different lens it can be seen as Victor barking orders and William just obeying like he's been programmed to do. Is William just another one of Victor's creations? And there's the fact that William just goes along with Victor's assessments with no thoughts of his own. He calls the Creature "it" even though Elizabeth should beat his ass for that. He believes Victor's obvious lie that the Creature killed Harlander, and the even more obvious lie that the Creature somehow shot Elizabeth. Does he even have a mind of his own or does he just do the safe option and not challenge his brother? Maybe he's just kind of dumb I don't know.
Of course, Victor may be embellishing his relationship with William out of delusion, in that he just thinks that's how it was. Or he could be trying to make William the perfect loyal brother due to grief, but I don't know, Elizabeth doesn't even believe Victor when he wishes her and William happiness. This is another story where a character who's strongly coded as narcissistic has a character arc and is "cured" of his mental disorder.
The Creature didn't hear William call Victor a monster, but has Victor ever treated anyone less than monstrously? Why should William be an exception in spite of all the subtle clues piling up during the movie? Especially since a cornerstone of Victor's psychological turmoil stems from this baby who killed their mother, whom his father showed actual kindness toward. No way he was actually as nice to him as he would have the Captain or the audience believe. So even if the Creature couldn't have heard William's last words, I think he was right in the spirit of it. Victor doesn't interrupt to deny it. It may not have happened but it is still true.
Folklore girlies⦠hear me outā¦
Have yāall heard of the Ghillie Dhu? A gentle, solitary forest spirit in Scottish folklore? Also known as āthe dark haired ladā or ādark servantā, he tends to be tall, disheveled and blends into his surroundings, usually by covering himself in leaves and moss. He has a great respect for nature and is protective of the forestās creatures but tends to avoid humans. Lost children however, he is kind to and willing to help to find their way home. In one tale, he is hunted by men for helping a lost young girl.
I was just thinking about this after reading about him and couldnāt help but see the similarities in the creatureās/adamās behaviour. Shy, kind, nurturing, at one with nature etc⦠misunderstood by man. I know there are differences and all, mostly that he is drawn particularly to the old man but DO YāALL SEE MY VISION?
The Creature was so innocent and pure-hearted asking Victor for companion, like a child asking their parent for a stuffed bear, so kind and gentle. Full of hope. Only for Victor to answer that gentle innocent hope with disgust, hatred, and cruelty... sending The Creature into a tantrum-like state, filled with panic, heartbreak, and rage that could even be described as a regression to a childlike state....
The way Victor immediately sexualizes the creatureās request is horrid. The creature looked so hurt and confused after Victor said all of that. Itās entirely possible that the creature had no idea what Victor was referring to.
