When it comes to art, movies find a special and an irreplaceable place in everyone’s heart. Evolution of Indian cinema dates back to the end of 19th century and by the beginning of 20th century, there were silent films produced in the north. That is how Indian Cinema started evolving slowly.
And now in the beginning of this 21st century, has Indian cinema taken any flights to the higher levels or it has stayed laid back motionless? Whether it is the former or the latter, there are certain reasons why Indian Cinema has attained its present position in the world of cinema. And we the viewers are the actual reason for both its praise and curse.
In India, there are two different types of movies produced -Art Cinema and Entertainment cinema. This particular distinction between the movies is enough to tell us whether Indian cinema is propelling in the right direction or not, as cinema has to be purely Art and only art is aimed at to entertain People.
Before getting deeper into the open analysis on the Indian movies and the Indian movie watchers, we shall have a close look at this:
Sultan and Dangal are two sports drama films released in 2016. Dangal was known to be critically acclaimed. But Sultan was not appreciated by many of the film critics. Film critics reported Sultan has various retrograded dialogues like Anushka Sharma saying “My Father brought me up like a boy”. This, to some extent, helps us to understand the view of critics on Indian cinema. Critics here are actually doing their job of criticism in a good level. They are focusing on how to get quality movies from the movie makers and to prevent such retrograded movies from these Indian movie makers. If critics and criticism upholds its perspective, then it shall promise more good films in the future.
But…
At the same time, still Bollywood is deluged with triangle love stories; Kollywood is a torrent of Commercial yet entertainment cinema; all other cinema industries being a confusion of their own. Still nobody can tell exactly what genre is Bahubali- The Indian Cinema’s Pride, as portrayed by Director Shankar. All these cinema groups have one common issue with them: Confusion. Here in India, Criticism gets muted when a movie is commercially performing well.
If you contemplate Iranian new wave, you can find that the revolution didn’t start with the directors or movie producers. It started with the Iranian viewers. Iranian viewers had/has a discriminating attitude towards movies, resulting in a large number of quality cinema entering into the world cinema hall. Is there a healthy perspective among Indian Viewers in watching movies? On what basis Indian Viewers weigh a movie- Criticism or Commercial Success?
We Indian Viewers didn’t have a healthy posture towards movies. Producers on the other side didn’t want viewers to grow up and expand their vision. Movie makers and Producers are continuously bringing down their audience overwhelming them with the box office collection reports and other commercial success reports of their movies. It has been a strategy used by producers to attract more people to theatres. And there is a large group of fanatic boys who find enthusiasm in these box office reports, for no cause.
Another hurdle that is preventing Indian cinema from growing is the fan boys. Fanaticism means the quality of being a fanatic. It never means to praise the actor’s movie regardless of the quality of the movie. Only when criticism dominates fanaticism, Indian Cinema can take a flight to the sky.
Where are we heading? Where are we taking our movies to?
There are many quality movies coming out every year from India, but are very few when compared to commercial movies. Some go unnoticed. Some reach their audience. How long are we going to wait for Nolan’s and Tarantino’s movies while still having talented directors here?
