Soulmates were something that Ash had never really understood. Flashes of feelings that weren’t his, a sadness he couldn’t explain. A wanting for his mother when she was right there, or feeling of self depreciation that weren’t his own. His mom had tried to explain that it was his soulmate.
So he’d always thrown back whatever he could muster. All of his positive emotions trying to make whoever was on the other side feel better.
It wasn’t hard, no one in their right minds would accuse him of anything like restraint, especially in holding back how he feels. Ash Ketchum was a sun, a human supernova of light and feeling, and he didn’t want whoever his soulmate was to feel like they were alone.
Because he was there even if they didn’t know each other, even if they might NEVER know each other.
Of course, with all the places he’s traveled and all the people he’d met. Maybe it was silly to think they’d never meet. Maybe he should have looked harder, but as it turned out, he didn’t have too.
It wasn’t until now, well into their friendship, after all of their adventures, that he’d even vaguely connected the dots.
After all they’d suffered together, it seemed so obvious now.
Only, he didn’t know how to act on it. Should he act on it? He was supposed to be going home soon.
All he could really think about, was how much more sense it all made in hindsight. How their gym battle together, the rush of emotions, of exhilaration, the feelings that he’d overlooked at the time in light of his victory.
Maybe he was just that foolish. To completely miss spending months upon months with his soulmate.
He really was an idiot sometimes.
