What’s really cool about this is that cephalopod (octopus, squid, etc.) intelligence evolved completely separately from intelligence in tetrapods (which includes primates, dolphins, crows… basically any other intelligent animals you can think of). Cephalopods are very, very far away from us on the tree of life. For context, you and a starfish are more closely related than you and an octopus. The last common ancestor of humans and cephalopods was the so-called Urbilaterian, the hypothetical first animal with a left-right symmetric body. This animal almost certainly had, at most, an extremely simple nervous system, without anything resembling a brain.

All this is to say that the fact that this octopus appears to be dreaming means one of two things. Either

a) dreaming is a very, very old thing indeed, going directly back to the Urbilaterian. This would mean that almost every animal, from insects to starfish to sea slugs to newts, is likely to have the ability to dream in some capacity or another (unless they have specifically lost it by evolutionary simplification).

or

b) dreaming evolved entirely independently in cephalopods when they developed greater intelligence. This would suggest, at least, that there’s something very fundamental about dreaming related to intelligence itself, which causes it to emerge independently when sufficient intelligence arises.

Needless to say, either of these outcomes would be really very cool.

while i do sometimes use fakespot in conjunction, i highly recommend using reviewmeta instead

no matter what algorithms used, its bound to make mistakes and flag ordinary things as suspicous, so being able to look at these things helps give the user a better idea of whats going on

fakespot doesnt really give you that information, whereas reviewmeta is completely transparent and lays out the data to let you determine whether somethings really suspicious or not. this blog post goes more into detail on that

The movie also establishes that all of his neighbors are out of town which is why he couldn’t borrow their phones. The movie ALSO BEGINS by introducing the main antagonist as a “police officer” which is why Kevin doesn’t trust the cops. I’m so tired of the ignorance. The slander.

Keep in mind that the robbers could have turned around and left at any time. Kevin set up the traps, but they didn’t have to walk into them. They could’ve left and robbed an easier house, but didn’t because they wanted to get the 8-year-old who was beating their asses. At some point, it stopped being about stealing the McCallisters’ stuff and started being about killing Kevin, at which point Kevin was justified in doing whatever the hell he wanted to them.

The term "masterpiece" originally and traditionally meant a piece of work that an apprentice or other aspiring craftsman created to show off to his master or the town's guild. So naturally, it was intended to be the best fucking thing that you could make, demonstrating just how fucking good you are at what you're making - 100% to flex your skills. And if it was approved, the applicant was accepted as a member of the guild and could now call himself a master, and work in this craft in this city.

So the next time you're looking at The One Great Thing you made and think "this is it, my masterpiece, I have peaked, it's all downhill from here", consider looking it the other way: Making your masterpiece means you're only getting started.

I’m playing a relatively new game and it’s still a little buggy so whenever there’s a glitch or something the devs want you to email them about it. So my game crashed and deleted my save file and when I sent the devs an email about it I got this back:

As a designer who used to be a tester, I can absolutely confirm that this is one of the three basic responses to bugs:

“Hah, that’s AWESOME!” — translation: Usually an animation or physics bug whose results are so hilarious you wonder if it’s worth just leaving it in so everyone can see it. I hope you got that on video or something.

“Oh, this shit again.” — translation: I thought I fixed this fucker like five times already. Either somebody keeps breaking it, or I’m going to have to spend all week trying to find some deeper underlying cause of it all.

“Well, that’s terrifying.” — translation: that shouldn’t even be possible, but if it is, dear sweet zombie jesus, what other things might be going wrong behind the scenes? These are the nightmare bugs that could require fundamental reworks.
