Good day 😊
Neve’s whole life is absurd right now, you guys.
I mean sure, being a private detective may have been her career choice, but it wasn’t like she was busting blood magic rings every week.
And yes, perhaps setting up shop in Docktown, the most hopeless quarter in Minrathous was a little optimistic.
And yeah, getting involved with the Shadow Dragons was a CHOICE (anything tied to Dorian Pavus was a CHOICE, lets be honest).
But not even the Shadow Dragons had seen Rook coming.
“Neve, I just freed like a hundred slaves and now half the Magisterium is really mad at me.”
“Neve, I joined famous author Varric Tethras on a quest to stop a god and now the sky is falling and there’s at least two more gods.”
“Neve, you know that famous mage killing crow assassin you mentioned? Let’s go get him.”
“Also he makes coffee and wonderful foods so he’s doubling as our cook now…yeah I know he’s versed in every poison in Thedas. So what? Eat your porridge.”
And its just getting worse. As they toddle away from the Grand Necropolis of Nevarra, Rook’s eyes are fixed on the back of SENIOR MOURN WATCHER Emmrich Volkarin, because apparently Rook asked “do you want to join our summer camp?” And the Mourn Watch said: “of course sounds like fun!”
Volkarin is talking excitedly to Bellara like the incredible nerds they are. And Rook is helping the skeleton butler carry what looks like three suitcases and half a library. Because of COURSE they are.
And their eyes remain fixed on the back of Volkarin’s coat. The way Rook’s eyes have been fixed on him all through their wild fight through the Grand Necropolis. A fact that nearly got Rook brained by Venatori several times.
“Rook,” Neve says, testing the waters.
The eyes Rook turns to her are as soft as a halla’s.
“Oh Maker,” Neve closes her own eyes against the oncoming headache.
Ridiculous.
Cute.
But ridiculous.
The Veilguard are all touch starved, you guys.
It’s Davrin who notices. He’s been distanced from his fellow wardens for a while now, the ones he was close to have been killed. But he has Assan.
A living breathing feathery ball of affection does a lot to help the empty ache in his chest.
“Hey,” Harding says, knocking and entering his room shortly after his arrival. “I’m just making sure your comfy and you found a good spot. Nothing like having a good…nest-er…den? Is he friendly? I’ve always wanted to see a griffon.”
“He is, and good luck trying to get him off,” he says, chuckling as Harding almost disappears under Assan’s affections.
After that Harding makes a point of visiting Assan once a day. She seems to get a lot out of his interaction. Which is a little odd. Harding is an outgoing person. Davrin can see she doesn’t shy away from casual touch. So why is she yearning for it?
And then he finally meets the elusive Lucanis who bears all the same wary hallmarks of imprisonment as many wardens do.
He watches Neve demonstrate icy barriers both magically and physically. Bellara is almost impossible to pin down long enough to get a word in, let alone a touch.
And Rook spends a lot of time in the infirmary by themself.
But they all slowly navigate towards Assan. And Davrin takes advantage. He talks to them in low voices like he would the Halla, he sings soft Dalish songs that slow Bellara to a walk, and asks Neve questions that get her talking until her cheeks warm. He compliments Lucanis’s cooking until the pale, sun-deprived face softens into animation.
Slowly, surely, just like with the halla, Davrin gets close enough to touch them, bumping shoulders, brushing fingers, gentle pats.
He’ll draw out this skittish bunch into a real team. Just like with the wardens.
Lucanis has rather unorthodox ways of teaching people to knit/crochet.

Chapter 5 of my collection of Emmrook-onesies, shedding light on "first times" in their relationship, has both of them getting a tiny bit jealous. Why? Because they're a little stoopid ♥
I have also updated my Emmrook-sickfic, Manfred is no longer the last man standing because at least Emmrich is getting better!
Assan is napping, you guys.
He is very good at napping. It’s one of the primary skills of a griffon after all. He doesn’t have any grown griffons to tell him so. But he has his dad.
“Come on, buddy. Are you really just gonna lay there all afternoon?”
“I’m gonna need you to get off my legs at some point, little guy, I can’t feel them anymore.”
“Are you going to leave any of that bed for me or are you going to just…sure. Help yourself. I didn’t need that pillow.”
Father’s praise is abundant and generous. Assan can hear the pride in it. He is a good fledgling. He has learned to nap well.
But it is important to have a community.
“Biiiiiiiiiiiiig Stretch!” says the one who smells of forests and won’t let Assan in her room because it is ‘delicate,’ and ‘explosive,’ whatever that means.
Her eyes grow big with delight when Assan gets up. Front legs in a bow, back legs one by one. He curves in an elegant arch, and finally his wings in a great shudder that rattles his feathers all the way down to his lion tail.
He yawns and looks at his new friend.
Her eyes are very big. She’s sketching in her little book. “So cute!” she squeaks.
Assan preens.
“Hello Assan!” says Manfred’s Dad.
He is older, which means he has survived a long time. There are a lot of things in the world that will Eat You if you are not careful. Assan respects this.
“You’re a very good boy,” he praises Assan, and Assan believes him. He does not know about the best of books he and Manfred have been building behind the bookcase.
Then Assan is raking his claws against the kitchen door.
The door opens. And the one that smells like Spite pokes his head out.
Assan freezes with his claws still inside the door, several deep rents decorate it.
They stare at each other. Assan worries perhaps he has intruded on the wrong territory. He does not to upset the one who smells like Spite. The one who smells like Spite gives very very good treats.
The man’s eyes narrow at the markings in his door.
Then he nods.
“Sharp. Good!” and he gives Assan a bit of fish.
The one who smells like Spite also has very good claws that he keeps on his belt and in his boots and other places Assan cannot see. He is always sharpening them.
Assan slides down the door with several satisfying scrapes.
High praise indeed!
